Wow. Really nice, thanks. SVD looks pretty cool, and it's reliability is a big plus (I've heard that it has excellent reliability just like the AK that it was based on -- pretty neat assault-turned-sniper rifle).

Never was an assault rifle, it is its own design, not remotely like an AK which is what many people believe.
I have a Chinese one in 7.62x51 NATO. I wanted an original caliber rifle (7.62x54r) but the highest possible quality of match grade ammo is available in 7.62x51, which gives this one the edge in accuracy over the original caliber just by a hair. The SVD in the original caliber takes it on coolness factor though, there is nothing like it! Unfortunately the match grade ammunition in 7.62 is not comparable to 762x51 unless you happen to be a reloader.
Here's mine. Not the difference between this one with the straight mag and the nice Russian curved mags above, of which I am very jealous!

Very cool, a NATO round chamgered one. What's the scope? Maybe a PSO-1 I guess?

Its a Chinese variant of the 4x PSO-1, serialed to the gun. It is supposed to have some nominal IR capabilities but its first generation and doesn't work worth a crap. I have a 8x PS0 on my PSL (a similar rifle, actually a beefed up AK in 762x54r) that also fits the Drag and is much nicer for shooting, but the black Chinese one just looks "right".
FYI, these Chinese Drags were diverted from production to fill a commercial contract for rifles specifically to be imported into the US. They are called the "NDM-86", presumable for "Norinco Dragunov Model 1986", but I am not sure on that. They made between 3000 of them IIRC, I don't know the exact number, and half were 7,62x51 and half were 7.62x54. The rifles chambered for 7.62x54 accept all SVD magazines, Russian and Chinese, the 7.62x51 rifles only accept the mags made for it, which ends up making them expensive. There were 5 magazines per rifle all serialed to match the gun they were issued with, but the company that bought the remainder of these rifles from the original importer broke up the sets and you got one mag per rifle. A really crappy thing to do. They now charge $90 per mag, thats a lot of cash for a simple box mag. Word is they are all out now, so that's it. The rifles themselves are all gone, I barely got mine before they sold out.
Now I need a Russian! But alas, they are expensive...

Great post Dennis G..some stuff I have seen and some I haven't.
Even though I live in Canada where this rifle is on a bad boy list (no idea why, and they can't tell me why) I'm a huge fan of it and love reading about it.
Good thing I'm not in Iraq, as I'd be mighty tempted to not chuck a confiscated one into the to be destroyed pile..esp' if it was a Russian one..sigh.
Here is a another good site with good ID info etc:

Also here is the PDF file for the service manual..pretty neat stuff:

The IR features are purely for self defence... ie it can detect an Active IR light source... so that you can put a bullet through it. It is not meant to help you find targets at night... they have night vision sights for that.
The current issue scope, the 1PN59 Giperon is a 3-9 power better suited to the effective range of the weapon.

Those rifles are so sexy.
In the the snow video where he pulled the pad down to sit on, is that some sort of thermal pad?

Good info, but with my particular scope even looking directly at an IR beam (the active IR from a Soviet NSP-1 scope and a modern powerful IR flashlight), this scope barely senses anything visible at all. I think its just old and lost its ability. I would like to see how a new one worked, but they don't make them like this anymore.

I have read it needs special preparation before it will work properly. Some element inside has to be exposed for 15 minutes or something before it gains sensitivity.
The result is that active IR sources appear as orange blobs and the sniper is supposed to place the aim mark on the blob and fire.
I will try to find better info.
(BTW this was from a NZ gun Mag that did an article on the .308 version of the Chinese copy of the Dragunov... I think it was Issue 6 of "NZ Guns").

The original posts were made in 2004, it's quite possible the linked site has long since gone under.
