Yes, a Colombian conversion, when they ran out of spares for the tracked suspension. Something similar was tried post-war in the US using the rear suspension of the GMC CCKW 6x6 Deuce and a half.

I hear the ARVN used gun truck halftracks during the Vietnam war, for convoy escort. But I've never sen any pics. Are there any armies in the world still using halftracks, I wonder?
Maybe Lebanon's SLA were the last to use them?

I bet you there's 1 or 2 still in use in Israel for some local reason.

Try the Squadron/Signal Publications' book "Armor in Vietnam" There is a pic of a derelict ARVN M3A1 in there.

its look like german half track

yes. its based on german SdKfz 251 Ausf. C which were produced in Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (occupaded czechoslovakia) during the war. it was used by the CSLA during the early years. it has improoved engine (Tatra T-928-3 8V, 88,3 kW). there were numerous versions of OT-810 (medical, apc, light tank desrtroyer, recovery etc)

Before war, nazis took over our military industry, after war, we took some of theirs...

That's pretty interesting. Would you happen to know, what kinds of vehicles did the Germans allow the Bohemia-Moravia Protectorate Army (Regierungstruppe or Vladni Vojsko) to have? Halftracks? Kubelwagens?
The Protectorate Army: an army of just seven thousand men, commanded by forty generals, wow!

Yes, very nice looking aren't they? Unfortunately, only WW2 halftracks, in US service, are available in model kits. Israel eventually transferred many of its halftracks to the South Lebanon Army militia; when this force collapsed in 2000 many of its vehicles fell into the hands of Hezbollah, which passed them on to the Lebanese Army. Since the Army now has M-113s in service the halftracks have probably been retired.

I believe the IDF was one of the very last operators of this trusty ol' workhorse.

Here the mine clearing version with a 'Tsefa' launcher on the body.
They've since been phased out, superseeded by Puma with RAFAEL Carpet system. (BTW the Magach MBTs in the background are now in reserve too).

Not exactly a T19, which is based on the M3, but a reproduction based on an IHC M5, witness the flat fenders and (in other scenes from the movie) the rounded rear hull corners.

Any BTR-152 pics or it is not a halftrack?

As I recall, the BTR-152 was not turned into a halftrack*, as by the time it appeared halftracks were considered outmoded.
But here is a Russian prototype tank destroyer h/t, the ZiS-41:
http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/1033/zis41tankdestroyer02.jpg (http://img245.imageshack.us/my.php?image=zis41tankdestroyer02.jpg)
And the B-3:

* Many trucks could become ad hoc halftracks by fitting a track over the rear wheels to improve traction and flotation in soft soil and snow.

I believe the IDF was one of the very last operators of this trusty ol' workhorse.

Here the mine clearing version with a 'Tsefa' launcher on the body.
They've since been phased out, superseeded by Puma with RAFAEL Carpet system. (BTW the Magach MBTs in the background are now in reserve too).

wrong, IDF still uses the tsefa (viper) on a towed launcher for use with puma. one of the towed launchers used in op cast lead was hit and left behind, the palis cheered for the israeli loss but it's generaly agreed that it was better to leave it behind than risk the dangerous slow ride out of the city.

Have a question, any reason why there are no longer or very little modern half tracks designs after WW2?

Thanks

Dark Avenger
05-07-2009, 04:54 AM
Two reasons: Complexity and performance. The tracked bogie increases cost, complexity and maintenance requirements, while still not offering optimum mobility over rough or soft terrain. A 3/4 track (i.e. a halftrack with a long track bogie and a short distance between it and the front wheel so that it does not get hung up - belly in, that is - on rough ground) might offer some improvement, but not enough to justify the cost. Anyway, advances in all-wheel technology, like independent torsion bar or coil spring suspensions, central tyre pressure regulation, etc offer similar or better mobility at lower cost. In addition, a fully tracked APC/IFV is just about the only vehicle that can work closely with tanks over any kind of terrain, as even the latest wheeled vehicles do have their limitations. With the above in mind, it is not surprising that the US Army after WW II went for fully tracked carriers and kept only specialized variants of the wartime halftracks in service (the M16/M16A1 MGMC and the M15 CGMC).

Potifar, a ground launcher for standard arm ARM. the details of their ops in sinai front during 1973 are still clastified, except for the fact that they have been used and that the missions (launch and escape, deep behind enemy lines) were borderline suicidal.

Hello, let me show you few russian halftracks.
After WW2 Soviet army needed light and simple prime mover and chassis for APC and other combat vehicles.
But soviet industry was in ruins and could not produse efficient full-tracked and off-road wheeled vehicles in big numbers.
The solution was easy - convert any simple truck into half-track.
In late 40's first soviet post-war halftrack was built. It was ZiS-153.
First version had german-type tracks.
http://pics.livejournal.com/timokhin_a_a/pic/00050cqq
But it was only experimental vehicle, not for production.
Few yeas later another prototype was built.
http://pics.livejournal.com/timokhin_a_a/pic/00052afz/s640x480
This vehicle was ready for serial production. It has powered front axle, cabin and engine from ZiS-151 truck and reliable tracks.
http://pics.livejournal.com/timokhin_a_a/pic/00051kxe
This vehicle could be basic for BTR-152 because soviet marshall Ivan Konev wanted to equip Soviet army with half-tracked APC's.
But in early 50's soviet industry was repaired and ready to produce tracked and wheeled off-road vehicles in enough numbers. Producing of halftrack was canceled.

Not only ZiS plant tried to built half-tracked prime mover.
Another Soviet automotive plant GAZ tried do this too.
In 1947 GAZ's engineers built half-tracked version of GAZ-51 serial truck. Its rear axle was replaced by german Opel Maultier tracks.
You can see this vehicle here-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaO-ZjatKuw&feature=related
Then, in 1950 new vehicle was built. It has original russian tracks.
http://denisovets.narod.ru/gaz/gazprototips/GAZ41_AP41_2.jpg
Later it was upgraded - track system became more compact.
http://denisovets.narod.ru/gaz/gazprototips/GAZ41_AP41_3.jpg
In 1951 after tests program was canceled, because GAZ became ready to produce full-tracked vehicles and began production of good off-road 4WD trucks GAZ-63.
Article about this hal-track - http://www.krpb.ru/kb.php?mode=article&k=9 (in russian).

In early 60's half-track kit for GAZ-63 4WD truck was invented. GAZ-63 could be converted to half-track and back very quickly. Little number of kits were produced.

In 1940 in the USSR have made 200 halftracks ZiS-22.
http://photofile.ru/photo/netimofey/2974279/large/107239299.jpg
Further the improved variant of ZiS-42 and modernised ZiS-42M was made.
http://photofile.ru/photo/netimofey/2974279/large/107239327.jpg
ZiS-42
http://photofile.ru/photo/netimofey/2974279/large/107239350.jpg
ZiS-42M
Halftracks ZiS-42 intended for trailing of heavy guns and transportation of various cargoes out of roads. They have shown good flotation ability in the winter on snow, but in the spring often broke. ZiS-42М were serially made till 1946. Because of shortage of gun tractors in some military parts of anti aircraft defence they were in the service till 1951.
P.S. I am sorry for my bad English.

AlexT

Here is article about this halftrack - http://www.bronetehnika.narod.ru/zis42/zis42.html
It would be interesting for russian-speaking users, others will find there many photos and pictures of ZiS-42 halftrack.
Production of ZiS-42 and 42M
1942 — 752
1943 — 2115
1944 — 2334
1945 — 1102
1946 — 69
But those halftracks tracks were very unreliable. The power of its engine was not enough. And from the 1943 soviet engineers tried to invent something else.
First was AT-3 (Artillery Tractor, model 3).
http://rcforum.ru/modules.php?name=Forums&file=download&id=25737
It was ZiS-42M with rollers and tracks from SU-76 self propelled gun.
It was more reliable then standart halftrack, but low power still was a problem.
Soviet industry couldn't produce good engine for truck - all its power was used to produce tanks and combat vehicles.
And engineers have made the decision - use two engines.
In the begining of 1943 two experimental halftracks were built - AT-8 and AT-14. They differed from each other only engines - first was powered with standart ZiS-5M engines (2x75 hp), second - Zis-16 (2x95hp).
http://rcforum.ru/modules.php?name=Forums&file=download&id=25721
Vehicle had two engines, stand side by side and two gear boxes. One engine and gear box worked for one track - left for left, right for right.
http://pics.livejournal.com/timokhin_a_a/pic/000d1ba8
Those halftracks were powerful and reliable. They could tow heavy cannons and move through any terrain.
http://denisovets.narod.ru/zil/zilprototips/AT8.jpg
But they were too expensive, needed many fuel and had very hard steerihg.
Only 10 were produced. Number of produced AT-3 is unknown.
http://pics.livejournal.com/timokhin_a_a/pic/000d0hky/s640x480.
From 1943 Red Army began use lend-lease Studebakker US-6 and all halftrack and off-road vehicles programs were cancelled.
