Hi to all! I'm new at this Forum and i want to show you now some (big and small) Pics from the finest little Submarine in the world. It is the modernst-not-nuclear-powered-submarine in the world, but i think, you already know that ;) There is one ship in service (U31) and there are 3 more still in progress. The itilain navy become two more of these fast little ships - look at the lower Pics.
Greetings to all german users here - i'm german, too. :P
The biggest Pic at first, the others were a little bit smaller ;)

14 old 206A-class Submarines (30)
Armament: Torpedos DM 2 A3 , Mines
8-12 212-class Submarines are planned (4 ordered)
Armament: Harpoon , Polyphem , Torpedos DM 2 A4 "Seehecht" , Mines
Maybe 4 214+ ??-class Submarines with cruise missile but I think in a few years .

The very first picture is a class 209 submarine, not a 212 for German Navy.

Germany will receive 4 U212 Block 1 and 2 U212 Block 2 submarines rather than 8 to 12.

Any plans to get the U214-Class Ships? I never read somethin' about this. I think, the german navy will get only the U212-Ships, right?

Yes, with some of the development for the U214's flowing into the U212 Block 2 boats.
I like above huge pics.

Very nice ship ;)
Have the italians many other submarines? What i mean is, germany has many submarines, but italy ordered only 2 ships, why? Small fleet of Submarines or not enough money to buy more ships?

Actually we have 7 subarine in service,6 of the Sauro class ,very good submarines, builted between 1980 and 1993 and the first U 212,the second U 212 is still in costruction and we have planned other 2 U212.
Once time a submarine of the Sauro class stayed for 5 days under a battle group of the US navy without have been discovered!!

It is not very small *GG* The german boats were build to fight in the East-Sea (is this englisch for Ostsee?), where the water is not very deep (sometimes only 20 or 30 meters). And the newer U212-Ships were extremly hard to detect - read the last posted articel on navel-technologies.com (last Page). But thanks for the info!

The new Virginia class ships in the US Navy are pretty good too...as are the Seawolf.

The point is not that they are sexy (which is somewhat debatable). The NEW (not: "new") submarine class 212 is much smaller and stealthier than any nuclear powered submarine, but the revolutionary fuel cell propulsion makes them not only utterly silent but enables them to stay (and travel) submerged for a few weeks without surfacing (much longer than the usual conventional submarines). This kind of propulsion may very well be the future.

I don't know what the future will bring us, but I'm confident that there will be space for both, SSKs and SSNs, since they are two very different concepts for two totally different tasks.
It's like saying hey, we have jets, they are the future so why do we need helicopters anymore?

IIRC, the new sumbarines use Stirling AIP technology. I think Sweden was the first to use the system. Also, I read somewhere (can't remember where) that the new German subs will have "pods" that will be attached to the outside of the vessle and house decoys for enemy torpedos. Does anyone have any info on this? Picture maybe?

The Swedes use Stirling AIP for some time now, but the German subs use fuel cell AIP.
Don't know what you mean with attached pods. The countermeasures have their own tubes. I quote naval technology:
A consortium led by STN ATLAS Elektronik and Allied Signal ELAC is responsible for the development of the TAU 2000 torpedo countermeasures system. TAU 2000 has four launch containers, each with up to ten discharge tubes equipped with effectors. The effectors are small underwater vehicles, similar in appearance to a torpedo. The effectors are jammers and decoys with hydrophones and acoustic emitters. Multiple effectors are deployed in order to counter torpedoes in re-attack mode.

Baltic sea is very hard sea! cold with damn short wave. We use here Kilo its quite big but it has no problems to hide here betwin mass of cold and colder water ;) its maybe not as deap as atlantic but its great place for submarines
Pity we have no money for something like U212 even for new Kilo :( and we build only 2 Gawron class corvttes (similiar to K130) :( damn it :(

I guess it would be the contaiers. Any idea of how they work? Are they launched through the tordeo tubes or are they mounted somewhere else? The way I understood it, the containes were mounted externaly. I could be wrong though.

It wouldn't make much sense to mount them externaly if you think about noise reduction and water stream. Though I have to admit I have no further information so I can only speculate about that.
