Lieberman promotes 2-state solution

Egyptian paper reports meeting between Foreign Minister, Intelligence Chief Suleiman; Egyptian sources say Lieberman was "incredibly moderate"

Israel's controversial foreign minister, Avigdor Lieberman, openly promoted the concept of two states for two people, London-based Egyptian newspaper al-Hayat reported on Saturday.

According to the paper, Lieberman was "incredibly moderate" during a meeting with Omar Suleiman, Egypt's Intelligence Chief. Suleiman visited Israel last week, meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres.

His meeting with Lieberman was kept secret in order to avoid making waves following requests from Egyptians that the foreign minister issue a formal apology for statements made about Egypt's government in the past.

Al-Hayat reported that the meeting was "successful and met its objectives." In this context, the newspaper reported that the Netanyahu government is set deepening ties with Egypt as one of its top priorities, with one source saying that Netanyahu would visit Egypt after his return from Washington.

The paper quoted the source as saying that "Lieberman was a incredibly moderate and spoke with Suleiman about the peace process and negotiations. He presented the two-state solution as a means to promote security, stability and peace in the region.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of economic development in the West Bank and Gaza," the source said.

For someone who has said to provide the buses to drown Palestinians in the Dead Sea and that the Aswan Dam should be bombed, his current tone is incredibly moderate, yes. Some days ago he said that Israel would only start peace negotiations if Israel wants it, no matter what the US wants.

I guess Israel has been promised a tougher US stance on Iran in exchange for them starting peace negotiations.

When did he said that?

The man who is set to become Israel's chief diplomat is known for many things, but not his talent for diplomacy. Words like compromise or consideration have been absent from his vocabulary so far. When then Prime Minister Ariel Sharon proposed releasing 350 Palestinian prisoners in 2003, Lieberman uttered one of his notorious sentences: "It would be better to drown these prisoners in the Dead Sea."

A storm erupted in the Knesset plenum yesterday, following Transport Minister Avigdor Lieberman's reported proposal to provide buses to take the Palestinian prisoners that Israel releases to a place "whence they will not return."

According to another report, Lieberman said the prisoners should be drowned in the Dead Sea and he would provide the buses to take them there.

Anyhow, why do you think he's advocating a two-state solution? Do you think it's related to Iran?

I meant that you said it like he said that he will drown all Palestinians in the Dead sea.

Anyhow, why do you think he's advocating a two-state solution? Do you think it's related to Iran?Who knows.. although he is just being realistic, he is not the evil guy everyone thinks he is.
He is representing the government policy, not just his.. and he is in favor of a Palestinian state.

You don't get it, do you? He said prisoners while you said Palestinians. He naturally means Palestinian prisoners but you made it sound like he said he wants to drown all Palestinians in the Dead sea. If you ask him today, he'll still tell you he wants to drown the prisoners there.

The reason he wants a two-state solution is because it is what he promised to the voters, he said that he wants a peace process based on moving part of the hostile Arab Israelis that live in the triangle area to the PA control and moving the large settlements block under Israeli control. Thus, exchanging ground and population.
He always said the Israeli Arabs are more of a threat than the Palestinians and he wishes to get rid of as many of them as possible.

Straight from Israel Beytenu site

• A belief that the “land for peace approach” is fundamentally flawed – only a “land for land – peace for peace” approach, in which both parties compromise and commit to certain terms, can succeed

• The exchange of land highly populated by Arabs for land with Jewish settlements as a viable proposal for solving the Israel-Palestinian conflict
