Other installations in Iraq may soon see a market like this pop up in their backyards. MARAN, YEMEN: Yemeni soldiers take position 27 June 2004 in Maran, a remote mountainous region in Saada province, where extremist preacher Hussein Badr Eddin al-Huthi has taken refuge. As deadly clashes continued in Yemen's northern mountains, some 250 kilometres (150 miles) north of Sanaa, the authorities said al-Huthi had refused to negotiate an end to the fighting that has left 64 insurgents and soldiers dead. Yemeni authorities accuse the self-proclaimed "Emir al-Mumineen", or Prince of Believers, of stirring trouble by organising anti-US demonstrations after the main weekly Muslim prayers.

The "Flight Guard" system was meant to prevent attacks like the one launched against an Israeli Arkia charter jet over Kenya in September 2002

AMD-65's.

Very rare to see these in service these days. Awesome little AKs.
Actually, one of the worst AK's to ever be produced according to the Russian military. That's why you see so many of them in kit form coming to the US. They're practically giving them away to other countries.
The only advantage is the 11" barrel which would make CQB fairly decent. Why these guys are using them at distances greater than 5' is beyond me.

Good photos, always sad to see people dying, we have yet to achive a single day of world peace... if but for just one day, where another human being isn't killing the other out of differences and beliefs...
Good to see He219 :)

Well, when used in their intended role- crammed in an APC providing massed fire support, they are fine. What I mean, having built three of them and some other Hungarian AKMs, they are some of the cleanest, best manufactured AKMs I have ever seen. Absolutely stunning machining. And the littel barrel is not too bad, I was suprised with approx 6" goups at 100 yards, that is about all I could reliably hit anything with it though.
As for giving them away, I don't know, the Hungarians are doing well to sell them to the US, they are after all not too numerous, probably one of the less abundant AKMs. The AMD-63 even more so.
Nice pics though, you rarely see them in the field.

There's a reason they were produced in limited numbers ;)
As for the machine work, I've never owned on simply due to having to register it as an SBR (unless you put on a lame barrel extension bringing it to the required 16") so I can't speak with any authority on them.
As for tanker support, I thought that's what the AKS-74U's were for (or even more recently, the AK-100 series with the folding stock). But alas, we digress! heh.

el_kab0ng - you might not realize this, but the AMD65 is a Hungarian Rifle, not a Russian Rifle. I've personally fired a few in Hungary and found them to be a great addition to the Kalishnakov Family. They're effectlively the Local Answer to the AKSU style weapon. Slightly larger than an AKSU, but smaller than the AMD63 or AK47 - a decent weapon for a guy riding inside a BTR60 who needs something thats not going to hinder his ability to enter and exit a armoured vehicle under fire.
They're not made for "accuracy" - they're made for volume of fire. Our tactics are different from the tactics of the Warsaw Pact Nations - leading to different solutions. They believe in volume of fire and aggressive attack. We believe in accuracy and deep striking. Differient weapon for a different problem.

Even ak-47.net (http://www.ak-47.net/ak47/amd.html) gives the AMD-65 top honors and a quality rating of 10 ..
;)
The AMD-65 is widely popular with special forces groups for its reliability and its compact design. Very few AMD-65's were imported in to the U.S., most of which cost over $8000.00. If you desire a rifle that looks similar to the AMD-65 we would suggest that you purchase a pre-ban Hungarian SA85M (http://www.ak-47.net/ak47/sa85m.html) in the $700.00-$1000.00 price range. You will then need to purchase a AMD-65 parts kit and have it installed on the pre-ban receiver. Please note that you will have to register the gun as a Short Barreled Rifle if your barrel is less then 16 inches in length.

Yes, they are Hungarian, and they do need either a barrel extension or an extended muzzle brake to be of legal length in the US. Here are my pair of AMD-65s, one is built on a premade receiver and one is made on a self-made receiver. I like 'em!

For comparison, this is the earlier AMD-63. This was only made for a short time because they were obviously not appropriate for mobile infantry, but as a standard sized AKM, there are few made as well as the Hungarians. Comparatively, I'd say it stacks up well if not better than a Polish made AKM, considered to be among the best.

...This is the first time I see an M16/M203 with the RIS configuration and Sniper Scope, other than on M4 models...
Marines, unlike the Army, are issued M16A4s which come with RIS handguards. The M203A2 is designed to mount via M1913 rail.
http://www.fnmfg.com/products/m16/m16a4usmc.htm
The Marine in this picture opted to mount his scope on the carry handle instead of removing the carry handle and mounting the scope directly on the flat top reciever.
