anyone care to explain the difference between death, power, heavy, speed, and bombast metal...anyone...bueller?
Ok lets have a little Metal 101 shall we class?
1)Death Metal- Bands like Death(my personal favorite)Morbid Angel, Obituary, Cannibal Corpse singing about zombies, blood and guts etc. "Butcher the decomposed virgin zombie whores and feast on their entrails, etc etc" with growling (sometimes called derogatorily cookie monster vocals), fast downtuned riffing and insane drumming
2)Power Metal- Bands like Blind Guardian, Stratovarius, Manowar singing about fantasy, midieval themes like "We are the chosen ones come to slay the dragon with our honor and glorious might" type stuff with fast guitar work and soaring lead guitars and vocals
3)Heavy Metal more of a term for the overall genre, but classic bands like Iron maiden and Judas priest are usually put into this category. Iced Earth are todays straight forward heavy metal band in my opinion
4)Speed or thrash metal is like Megadeth, old Metallica, Overkill, Death Angel, Kreator, with insanely fast riffing, double bass drumwork, crazy solos, and barking or singing vocals depending on who you listen to.
This completes todays lesson, with this knowledge you can consider yourself on the way to becoming a true metalhead.

Bombast-Metal is what NIGHTWISH did or Blind Guardian (Last Album)., or Edenbridge.
Good to see some Metalfans here! I love Speed/Power-Metal (it's almost the same), i'm a big BG-Fan and i like Stratovarius, Helloween, HammerFall, Nightwish, Heavenly, Edguy, Gamma Ray, Freedom Call and so on and so on.... great Stuff :D

I love Judas Priest and Iron Maiden and all the classic metal bands. I saw Korn a few years ago, and I thought that there was going to be a riot. When they played "Freak on a Leash," two sixteen yo girls sitting on some guys shoulders took off their shirts and started making out. The mosh pit went ballistic.

but other favorits include megadeth, ozzy(mostly because of randy and zakk)
and i listen to some hardcore, and new metal too. like avenge sevenfold and godsmack.

Metallica is a great overall band they've produced different types of "Metal" and "Rock" over the years and its almost all great.
I listen to metal 24/7
I like all metal except nu-metal.
Finntroll
Nightwish

Dimmu Borgir

Freedom Call
Blind Guardian
Children of Bodom
In Flames
Arch Enemy
Lost Horizon
Sethian

Battlelore
Kamelot

Black Metal was not mentioned, it is akin to death metal and even more gloomy and sometimes more melodic, with usually Satanist themes but not necessarily.
Examples:
Dimmu Borgir
Cradle of Filth
Impaled Nazarene
top 10 songs:
Finntroll - Jaktens Tid (perfect, raging!)
Finntroll - Fiskarens Fiende (catchy and fun!)
Nightwish - Bless the Child (Epic, beautiful)
Blind Guardian - Time stands still (at the iron hill) (bombastic, uplifting, soaring, especially the live version!)
Slayer - Angel of Death (classic!)
Manowar - Call to Arms (To arms!)
Children of Bodom - Every time I die (heavy!)
Kamelot - Snow (Epic!)
Lost Horizon - Cry of a restless soul (Soaring!)
Iron Maiden - Aces High (classic!)

Metal bores my arse off now - I have a massive CD / vinyl collection from my black clad youth period, namely Slayer, Maiden and Emperor. The last interesting metal I came across was Cradle Of Filths - damnation and a day. Nightwish are pretty good - though European metal is so bloody over-theatric (Mass pretensions).
Now I'm to old and jaded to bother getting into new bands.

Ah Metal, what sweet sounds to relax to. Black Sabbath, Anthrax, early Metallica, Suicidal Tendencies, Blind Guardian, Nile, Melechesh, Bolt Thrower, Cradle of Filth, Absu, Dimmu Borgir, Slayer, Haggard, Amon Amarth, Sepultura, Soulfly.....so many bands to like, so little time. :D
What the heck is "nu-metal"?
More mainstream, often rap-influenced heavy metal that is often popular with teens, like Slipknot, Linkin Park and Korn.
@Mocking_loudly_died: Hmm, I would get quite bored of those bands too, maybe you should try the album Dimmu Borgir - Enthrone Darkness Triumphant. Dimmu Borgir is a popular Black metal act and many "true" black metalists say they have become too mainstream lately, but that's mainly because they're damn good. Especially the older albums like EDT get glowing reviews everywhere.
Also, try Children of Bodom - Hate Crew Deathroll for some fun, raging, a bit melodic Death.
Overly theatrical - Hmm, that's exactly what I like about power metal. p-)

I still think that the best new wave metalbands come from finland :)
Anyway I have been listening a lot of Mokoma lately. The new album is awesome. Anyone who is in to trash-metal should get that album!

Entombed's "Wolverine Blues"(they made me wanna play the guitar) and "To ride, shoot straight and speak the truth", Machine Head "Burn my eyes", Misery Loves Co., Ministry's "Psalm 69", Transport League, Fear Factory and Sepultura, Rage against the Machine's first album among a few...I remember I bought Korn's first album from a small review in "Guitar world" and it rocked! I think I was about the only guy in my hometown who listened or had even heard about Korn at that time.
It was a fantastic time to be a metal-head in the early-mid nineties!
Nowadays, I hardly ever listen to metal. Most of those bands are just bleak copies of themselves or have disappeared. Korn should be brought on trial for sparking the whole "Nu-metal"-scene and all their new stuff sounds exactly the same (boooooring)...
Whenever I pick up a copy of Close-up (swedish metal/alternative magazine) to keep myself relatively up-to-date with the Metal scene there is an interview with some finnish guy dressed up as a troll or an orc doing "ambient black metal" :cantbeli: !
Hmm...rant over, I guess  . Probably there are some new stuff out there that's worth listening to but I do not have the energy to sift through all the garbage...
Finntroll - Jaktens Tid (perfect, raging!)This guys made a very nice clip, just full of trolls ;)
Yes, that clip, erm, it's quite embarrassing actually IMO. Finntroll lyrics are based on a fantasy theme of evil trolls waking up from their sleep in medieval times to cleanse the North of human intruders. Awesome battlesongs and polka-influenced black metal abound! Kill all humans! In this sense the video really screws the feeling up by being so mediocre.
Finntroll is an incredibly inventive band, the newest album Nattfödd is getting great reviews all over the place. Check it out, for something different. The lyrics are in Swedish, so I guess you might not get everything out of it if you don't speak it, I do.
Hullebullen, Metal has experience a huge upsurge since the mid-90's if you haven't noticed, you should seek out some examples from this thread here. :)
By the way, I actually bought the new Blind Guardian DVD today, probably the best live DVD ever, if this doesn't make you love BG then there must be something wrong with you. ;) J/K (partly)
The best metal generally comes from Scandinavia/Germany with some select American bands in my opinion, it has to have an edge, something new.

If it's dark and with guitars, there's a high probability that I like it!
I mostly listen to 3rd wave (read: melodic) Black Metal, but I like the rough old school stuff as well.
Gothic Metal is fine, too, as are selected Death Metal bands (e.g. At The Gates or Hypocrisy)
My all-time favorite Bands are Dimmu Borgir and Samael.

Remove all the wheelblocks there's no time to waste
Gathering speed as we head down the runway
Gotta get airborne before it's too late

I like metal (not nu-metal!), but this folk stuff belongs in a museum. I can deal with Darkthrone, Mayhem, and even some Satyricon, which can get pretty folky, but when a band starts singing about sword fights and pining for the fjords, that's just being a poser. Come on, what the hell are they portraying here!? These idiots go home, order pizza and play with their X-boxes. Barbarians my ass! :P

Local band singer assigned to Afghanistan
By Jonathan Bethely
That's because the lead singer of the inspiration heavy metal band has been called to active National Guard duty in Afghanistan. Jay Lakin, Marion, leaves next week.
As fledgling bands go, the absence of one member doesn't necessarily signal the end of the group, but drummer Ian Kaehr, LaFontaine, said the band will wait for Lakin to complete his service, which is expected to last more than a year, before the band takes to the stage again.
"When he first told us, it was really a big shock," Kaehr said. "We're going to wait on him. He wanted us to write some more songs."
While Lakin is away, the band will work on writing music and recording soundtracks so that when Lakin returns, he can add his voice to the band's music.
The four-member band has been together for six months. Marion guitarist Yog, (a name given to him by his grandmother) and bass player, David LaRoux, Marion, have been in the band since 2001. Kaehr joined the group a few years later.
Knowing the group was looking for a lead singer, a friend of Yog's recommended Lakin.
After a series of phone calls to Lakin, they finally connected in January.
"Jay's the greatest guy in the world," Yog said. "We've gotten close to him, musically and friendship wise."
The band draws inspiration from all the top heavy metal groups that have made it big. But, Kaehr said the band's sound is original because its lyrics sprout inspirational messages.
"Jay's lyrics have a Christian undertone to them. Even though he's not coming out saying it, it's inspirational metal," Kaehr said. "People got tired of how metal was trying to be evil and all devilish. We just want to have fun."
Today, Rise from Ruin is one of five bands playing at the Jonesboro Community Building, 705 S. Corder St.
Kaehr said Lakin wanted to have a concert before he left for Afghanistan.
He will be among several Indiana National Guard soldiers who will be leaving for Afghanistan in the coming weeks after a send-off ceremony Thursday at Camp Atterbury.
Most of the soldiers belong to units of the 76th Infantry Brigade based in Indianapolis, New Albany and Columbus, and were called up in April for up to 18 months of active duty.
About 6,500 Army and Air National Guard troops from Indiana have served on active duty since 2001.
Last year, nearly 1,500 Indiana Guard soldiers served in the Middle East during the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq.
Most have returned home.

You'd like Static X's first cd "wisconsin death trip", check it out its very good.
I listen to alot of Sonata Arctica and Hammerfall, and of course alot of Iced Earth. I like the europe metal style, as the "nu-metal" usually comes out soft and resorts to "screaming" to sounds tough.
Anyone listen to pantera (far beoynd driven cd-cowboys from hell?)?

Sorry, but that ain't metal. If you "just want to have fun" then go join a boy band and sing songs to 12 yr olds. Besides, if you think devilish and evil metal isn't fun then probably don't understand a few things.
They had a guy like this on the Daily Show recently. He was a punk Republican. The interviewer called him a moron, and the guy said "don't you mean oxymoron?" the interviewer replied "no, a moron."

Sorry, but that ain't metal. If you "just want to have fun" then go join a boy band and sing songs to 12 yr olds. Besides, if you think devilish and evil metal isn't fun then probably don't understand a few things.
Christian music can be metal: just look at Evanescence. Fun music can be metal: just look at Iron Maiden and Hammerfall.

By the way has anybody here had the chance to catch Iced Earth on their recent US tour, they freakin rocked, most awesome metal show I've ever been to! I really enjoyed the 30 minute *****sburg song and how they came out dressed in Civil War era uniforms, Jon Schaffer had a rebll flag Gibson and the other guitarist had an American flag painted Gibson, it was sweet!

Evanescence!? You must be joking.
You can't take the "evil" out of metal. Without that it's just not metal by definition.
Here is a much more detailed discussion of the "Christian Metal" trend and why it is a bastardization of the true Metal philosophy and lifestyle:

Have any of you heard of Avenged Sevenfold? Theyre a hardcore metal band from around here. It's some of the only newer metal I listen to.

Is that so. So you're willing to stand by the assertion that Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Nightwish, Queensryche, and about ten billion other metal bands suddenly aren't "metal."
By the way, if "Christian Metal" is an atrocity, all metalheads had better be willing to throw away their copies of Ride the Lightning, because "Creeping Death" is ripped straight from the Old Testament. James Hetfield was brought up in a Christian Science household.

True, Hetfield was brought up in that type of household, but he's not a practicing member of that religion. The lyrics in songs like "Dyer's Eve" and "The God That Failed" clearly show that he has separated himself from those beliefs. As for "Creeping Death" the song simply narrates a story, it isn't trying to convert listeners. The band even admits that the inspiration for the song comes from the Charlton Heston film "The Ten Commandments" and not from the bible.

True, but they're still not satanists or "evil" or anything. And OB said you had to be "evil" to be metal.
