The Pentagon’s new rifle, the aptly named “EXACTO”(EXtreme ACcuracy Tasked Ordnance), will be able to fire accurately from distances previously unheard of, has been highly classified until very recently. In development by DARPA(Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), who also played a key role in the invention of the Internet and also GPS systems. The new .50 caliber “supergun” could bring about revolutionary technology for sharpshooters, in technical terms the EXACTO rifle would employ “fin-stabilized projectiles, spin-stabilized projectiles, internal and/or external aero-actuation control methods, projectile guidance technologies, tamper proofing, small stable power supplies, and advanced sighting, optical resolution and clarity technologies.” Quite a mouthful.
The EXACTO rifle is expected to more than double both a snipers accuracy, and maximum range at which they could shoot and remain accurate, by taking factors of wind, elevation and humidity all out of play. Modern sniper rifles are currently accurate up to about 800 meters, on a very good day, whereas the EXACTO rifle will be able to make precise shots up to 2000-2500 meters!
