$35 million suits filed against Canada, Syria for alleged kidnapping, torture

TORONTO - An Iraqi-born Canadian, who claims he was kidnapped and tortured by Syrian officials, is suing the Canadian and Syrian governments for $35 million each.

Muayyed Nureddin, 36, says the Canadian government breached his charter rights by allegedly giving the Syrian government information about him, which he says led to his kidnapping.

Nureddin, a Toronto-area geologist who came to Canada in 1999 as a refugee, was arrested last December as he crossed into Syria from Iraq, where he'd been visiting relatives. He says he was held for over a month and tortured.

In addition to his claim against Canada, Nureddin is demanding $25 million from Syria for "kidnapping...false imprisonment, assault and battery and torture," plus $10 million in punitive damages.

He's asked that both lawsuits be heard before juries in Toronto.

Statements of defence have yet to be filed by the Canadian and Syrian governments.

Is it illegal to give other countries information about its own citizens? I thought all countrie did this. For example the NSA cannot listen in on US citizens but can listen in on people from other countries.

There seems to be problem like this all the time. A couple of Syrian sisters were looking for a visa to Canada, before getting their visa's they were arrested for breaking some idiotic by-law and tortured. They were recently preparing a lawsuit against the Government of Canada, because the Canadian government acted too slowly.

Sure the Government of Canada has acted slowly in the Foreign Affairs Department, but towards its own nationals. So I think that as citizens we have a right to waiting less...and foreigners are another story...

Yeah thats the thing... my mate is a Brit in Canada he just finished Uni there in Toronto... he is hard working and a great guy but he barely got a job there doing some rubbish job but he pays his taxes....
and now The Canadian government wants him outta Canada....

While they let people like this bully them around and give them grief...
I feel sorry for Canada :(

But Saying that I hold an EU passport and got fried in Toronto immigration as the Indian Canadian lady kept asking me 20 questions I couldn't answer a few as I was totally jet lagged... well when was my gfs birthday and I honestly couldn't remember I am a bloke for fuc*s sake...
I spent a good 700 pounds in Canada in 2 weeks and I am student as a tourist I wished I had better bloody treatment then being grilled...

My two pence...

Go Canada :D
