Moore: Americans are 'The Dumbest People on the Planet'
Americans currently flocking to see Michael Moore's movie "Farenheit 9/11" might be surprised to learn how little respect the Democratic Party's leading propaganda-meister has for them.
''They are possibly the dumbest people on the planet," Moore told Britain's Mirror newspaper recently, referring to his fellow citizens as a whole.
And that's not all Moore had to say about his brother Yanks across the pond. ''We Americans suffer from an enforced ignorance. We don't know about anything that's happening outside our country. Our stupidity is embarrassing.''
Turns out, when the Democratic Party's all-but-official filmmaker is speaking at home, he has nice things to say about at least some of his fellow citizens. But according to New York Times columnist David Brooks, when Moore travels abroad it's not just the Bush administration he trashes - but the American people en-masse.
Here's a few more bon mots from the Kerry campaign's leading celluloid supporter, as cited by Mr. Brooks on Saturday:
''That's why we're smiling all the time,'' Moore told a rapturous throng in Munich. ''You can see us coming down the street. You know, 'Hey! Hi! How's it going?' We've got that big [expletive] grin on our face all the time because our brains aren't loaded down.''
To a crowd in Cambridge, Moore intoned: ''You're stuck with being connected to this country of mine, which is known for bringing sadness and misery to places around the globe.''
Here's Moore's reaction to the 9/11 attacks, offered while the rubble at Ground Zero was still smoldering: ''We, the United States of America, are culpable in committing so many acts of terror and bloodshed that we had better get a clue about the culture of violence in which we have been active participants.''
As for the terrorists currently killing American soldiers in Iraq, Moore compares them to Revolutionary war heroes who fought off British oppression:
''The Iraqis who have risen up against the occupation are not 'insurgents' or 'terrorists' or 'The Enemy.' They are the REVOLUTION, the Minutemen, and their numbers will grow -- and they will win.''

Am assuming the article is legit.
Even if I do admit we Americans in general are ignorant of what's going on with the rest of the world, this was completely uncalled for.
Funny how as he himself is an American, refers to Americans in third form (they).
Sounds like he is embarrassed to be an American.....
I agree with the part where he says Americans are uninformed.. I'm pretty sure that will change though.. However, his depiction of the Insurgents/Terrorists in Iraq is apalling.. Plop him in Fallujah like the fat hamburger he is, and see how his "minutemen" will treat him.

Any countries out there want an overweight filmmaker who wears sandals too much and doesn't shave regularly? We've got one to export...
That said, this article sounds fake to me. I'm no Michael Moore fan, but this isn't his style of rhetoric at all, nor his speech pattern.

To be fair, spectre, I don't think there's anything special about that spectre. I would expect people from an educated European country like Finland to know at least some of the history of a superpower and the most influential country in the world. I know bits and pieces about alot of different countries, and I'm only 16. Americans aren't as closed-minded or ignorant as people think. The problem is that the mentality of many Americans is generally to worry about inside the US only. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it clashes greatly with the country's influence on the international scene.
It also doesn't help that our media is rather ****ty and tends to focus on celebrity and sensationalist bull**** inside the US rather than things going on in the outside world. Most everything the US government/military does in the international scene is portrayed in a negative light somehow.

Not everything is right, but if only a third is right, it is more than the Bush-Reich told the americans! If Moore said, the americans were the dumbest people in the world, it is not right, okay. But you all must see: the maericans believed many of the US-government-lies. And this must stop! And that's why i'm happy that moore is a controversal charakter.

No it isnt. Ignorance represents a lack of knowledge, in this case a lack of knowledge of the world outside America's borders ( war was invented to teach Americans geography :P ;) ). Stupidity is the inherent lack of an ability to think efficiently, either by processing information, deducing/inducing, or memorising. They are two very seperate things though the former is often accounted for by the latter. Americans aren't any less intelligent per capita than any other country's inhabitants. They are, however, less aware of the world outside their borders.

hes not fighting against anything, hes no freedom fighter or a refreshing breath of fresh air in a smog of conformist media  he is a freaking conspiracy theorist. he gets a fraction of a fact and builds on it until its a complete and utter lie. that like saying were going over to iraq to get oil to fuel a giant occupational robot, wich will opress the middle east, and whos opression will eventually spread to the rest of the world, which will in turn help the neo-nazi's to rise to power and restart hitlers thousand year reich,

That perception doesn't come from people thinking all americans are redneck, but from the fact that so few americans have passports, and travel abroad... obviously the same can not be said of those who have served their country abroad, but even then american military communities abroad are often cut off from the country they live in.
This adds to that perception, but of course that doesn't mean it is an accurate generalisation but there is truth in it.

About the American military communities abroad. That isn't true where I lived for 5 years (Misawa, Japan). Our base was very active with the community around us. Many festivals, events, and programs between the base and the community. Our school did many programs with the Japanese schools in the area.
Perhaps this is because compared to the other American military bases, Misawa is kind of isolated from them. Point is, there were many ways for onbase residents to connect with the host country.

just an opinion. I spent 9 years in San Diego when i was a teenager. In all honest there is alot of ignorants in america towards the rest of the world. perhaps with the current "unpleasantness" thi will change out of neccessity.
One of the funniest programs i have ever seeen on TV was directed at this ignorance. The show was called "Talking With Americans". The vast majority had zero knowledge of canada. After an hour of rick mercer getting average americans to congradulate Canada on switching from a 20 hour Metric clock, to the American 24 hour clock, only one person busted him. Some 12 year old kid stepped up and actually had knowledge of CAnada.
Now, alot of people will say that the show only targeted the uneducated, yet, Rick Mercer was questioning people at stanford, harvard, and berkley. One of the best was when he got a professor of Political science at berkley to sign a petition that would ban the annual alberta seal hunt.. hahahah!
Anyway, Moore takes some stuff way to far, but in my general experience there is a rather large ignorance towards the rest of the world from the USA.
Cheers

I'm not suggesting that you are totally disconnected, but that the military and in some cases this also happens in the diplomatic community too, a mini-america is created, in order to entice americans to join the armed forces and serve abroad, which goes back to the original point of reluctance to leave the states.

Having a passport and also having traveled abroad, I can say neither are prerequisites for being open minded and understanding.
With that said, the United States has a LOT of different regions. Traveling to any of them is like traveling in Europe...different accents, different driving styles, different cultures, and sub-cultures. There are plenty of places in the United States where you will never hear a lick of English.
A great example is the time I spent this past weekend driving to a wedding, visiting my friend's parents, and then driving home. If I did the the same distance during those three days, I WOULD need a passport in Europe, but I drove through three States...thats it...the equivalent of driving from Paris to Berlin and back with a couple side trips...and saw a LOT of different types of terrain, towns, and cities. One day I was in Kentucky, the next I was at a country club in Sandusky, OH. The next day I was on Lake Erie fishing for Walleye and later that evening I was hanging out at a Salsa/Columbian resteraunt where not a single waiter spoke English. Then, I was back home, chilling with some Hindu friends eating nan and lamb curry.
The point is. In a three (plus) day span, I experienced a LOT. Could you do it in Europe and never leave your home nation? Sure. But is their TRULY a difference? I do not see one.
Except for one...
I did it without buying a damn plane ticket and wasting my time flying half way around the world.
If that makes somehow less worldly...cool. I saved money, had a great time, experienced something I doubt a WHOLE bunch, of Germans, or Poles, or Italians did those same three days...
I guess what I am trying to say, if the passport and traveling is a prerequisite, what's the excuse for those that live in Europe?
'Cuz the last time I checked, they suffered from general stupidity of the masses JUST much as the United States does. :D

you have illustrated my point precisely, because you are satisfied with moving about in the states even if you do have a passport, you care less about other countries. It's perfectly illustrated on here , with many people assuming that anywhere that isn't the west is a ****hole that they see on TV.
I'm not suggesting that americans are stupid, in fact in almost all the countries the majority of people don't travel abroad, but they are very intrested in life abroad, the US is more inward looking then most. Precisely because it is a melting pot of cultures..

Not too sure how that can be tied to them being somehow MORE disconnected than any other large mass of people...

more disconnected with other countries, the others in the west.

While I agree with you on the fact that most people do not travel internationally.....I completely disagree with your rationale as to WHY people can be ignorant of the world around them.
culture, shmulture
Think about it for a second.
If you live nearly anywhere in the world......policy decisions made primarily in the US have the distinct possibility of impacting on your daily life(trade, aid, embargo, finance, etc).
With the exception of oil supply issues I can think of few things outside the US(barring global events like war) that have the likelihood of impacting on the daily lives of Americans.
The US sneezes the entire world catches a cold.
A 3rd world nation dies and it passes unknown....because it doesn't impact the average American.
People everywhere, regardless of nationality, for lack of better terminology, are selfish/self-interested/short-sighted.......if it doesn't impact them......who cares?
But if something DOES impact their daily life......they will certainly wake up and share their opinion.

The average American is no more stupid than the average Australian or UK person. Believe me - I've met some right old idiots in both of these stated regions.
America bashing is getting very tiresome.
Dude you rock.

Only when in my pink latex body suit and sporting my bad 80's mullet wig!
Speaking of which, I'm going to watch School Of Rock again (even though it is rather family friendly).

That perception doesn't come from people thinking all americans are redneck, but from the fact that so few americans have passports, and travel abroad...
This adds to that perception, but of course that doesn't mean it is an accurate generalisation but there is truth in it.

I would ask that you compare like-size countries. Is it not a inconsequential fact it takes a lot of money to travel. I lived as a single guy in Germany for almost 8 years. I could be almost broke and still hop down to Italy or Austria on the weekends for a bar crawl or skiing. Now if I live in the mid-west and I want to travel It's no small amount of cash to accomplish this feat. I think this is purely a geographical situation rather than some cultural phenomena. I don't know of anyone that wouldn't want to travel to some part of Europe for a vacation or some tropical paradise. How much do you think the average family of four Americans spends on a yearly vacation? How much do you think it costs to go to Europe with that same family? It’s pretty simple arithmetic to see why most Americans don't have a passport.
This whole thread just reeks of America bashing.... I guess it's okay now days to spread stereotypes as long as it's against Americans. How are your teeth? p-)

agree with the part where he says Americans are uninformed
We are not uninform we just don't care.
And that is what makes you stupid! :cantbeli:
Yeah lol coming from a country with a history like yours!
I make a honest comment on my personal feelings and I am deemed stupid? Who's really stupid?
Please refrain from insult for my grandad didn't fight a vain war on Europe's behalf for he fought the good war.
