National Park Service officials said they will begin taking land for the Flight 93 memorial in Somerset County from property owners because negotiations have been unsuccessful. The service said it will condemn about 500 acres still needed for the memorial to be built in time for the 10th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks.Randall Musser, who is one of seven landowners affected, said he is surprised by the Park Service's actions but understands the agency must move forward with land acquisition to finish the memorial by 2011.

Why in the holy hell do they need 1,500 acres to build a memorial? Sounds more like abuse of eminent domain to me.

Probably turn it into some sort of attraction, force people to pay to get in to pay their respects.

There is absolutely no reason to build any such lavish monument when few will travel to visit it. It would be better suited in Boston where the flights originated.
Could it be the state gets a big chunk of grant money to build this thing? You have to remember, the state can claim the roads in and around need upgrading due to this planned monument. That's potential "free" money in the pocket of Pennsylvania, the county and nearby towns.

The way things are going, they will need the extra acreage for a mosque.

having the moment mad in to a crescent with the graves pointing to the star that points to mecca, the crescent being made of red trees, really shows a lack of respect for the people on that flight that gave there lives. This is such a disgrace.

Woah. I hadnt noticed that was the design until I saw what you wrote. I double checked it and was like, "Whiskey Tango FOXTROT!?!?!"
Total disgrace

I don't agree wildcat, it's a half circle, however should have been a circle. I don't think it's an intent to point to Mecca, I don't think it is pointing to Mecca. I just think it's a stupid design not trying to dig beyond the stupidity and come up with OMG it points to Meccaa.

Flight 93 original destination was the San Francisco Airport. The majority of the passengers and crew lived in San Francisco Bay Area.
There is an existing a memorial in the San Francisco Bay Area (Union City) in honor of the Heros of Flight 93.

I wouldn't be surprised if Senator Murtha doesn't have at least 200 million on the way to build the site around the monument. Perhaps at 20 million more in stimulas money as well.
Too bad they failed in seizing souters home, good riddance to him.

incorrect sir, it's been solidly proven to point there. that is one of the major points that pissed off people.

Why is the memorial of flight 93 pointing to mecca?
I strongly doubt it's intentional. Probably never even occured to the people who designed it.

Just seems to much of a coincidence, a crescent type shape, and a star in the correct place that happens to point to mecca, I don't believe it was chance, but deliberate.

That seems like a hell of a lot of land to seize for sure. Who dreams these things up?

Everybody says it points to mecca, but how do they define point? I dont see an arrow or a finger, i think its a nice monument, too bad people spoil it by seeing things there aren't. And by the way, the crescent was stolen by the turks from the Romaioi.
