Any info on the circumstances surrounding this photo? I only ask because one of the guns (a 1911) looks quite a lot like one that was stolen from me (i live just outside San Antonio) last month.

The vehicle it self was named " monstro zeta" or zeta monster. It had a maximum occupancy of 18 people and could travel at a maximum of 90mph. The truck itself was a stolen vehicle, the armor was added on later. A similar vehicle was seized almost a year ago in tamaulipas. The cylindrical object on the top was the turret with moveable windows to work as firing ports. The thing above the turret aided the turret to turn a full 360 degrees. The vehicle was left in the middle of the street once the zetas figured out they where not going to outrun the authorities.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that 90mm recoiless rifle could likely take out any vehicle in Mexican inventory? Including a VIP transport? That's very worrisome. Where might that weapon have come from?

However if these news organizations printed the serial numbers and markings, and the Gov gave these Numbers to the relevant nations they could be better traced.

Even though considered obsolete against modern day MBT's and heavily armoured APC's like the M-1 Abrams and Nammer AFV, but to lightly armoured vehicles like ERC-90, AMX-VCI which are vulnerable to the M67 recoiless rifle. However, don't get me started what it would do to non-armoured like the F-150, Silverado, Humvees, and vehicles which the Mexican military and Federal police forces which are used most of the time.

I'm sure they're on it, both Mexico and the U.S., as such weapons in the hands of criminals pose a serious threat to the security of both nations, and I'm sure I'm not the first to realize this. Imagine if terrorists would get a hold of one of those on your side of the border? This weapon was made in the U.S. (most likely) and sold or given to some other country. It's just a question of taking it from there.

You're totally right of course. It's just that this is the first recoiless rifle I've seen here, and because of it's national origin, I would think that it would be easier to trace from which stocks it came. The RPG's would likely be harder to trace being that they are way more common.
Not to many years ago there was a plot uncovered to assasinate a high level PGR official (the ex-head of the Siedo) using an RPG against his vehicle. The plot was uncovered through information gained from captured cartel members. Sadly he was assasinated later, by betrayal I believe. Can't recall his name at the moment, but quite famous.

If its in working order and the firer knows how to shoot it correctly, like leading a target. the lack of multiple reload rounds captured means a likelyhood of 90mm Ammo being scarce

Yep, but lucky the Mexican military and the Federal Police are conducting these raids to stop these scumbags from using these small arms like the M67, M72, and RPG-7 along with other weapons which could be used against their vehicles and soldiers, marines, airmen, and police officers. Also, the Mexican military along with the Federal Police has been beefing up or ordering more armoured vehicles to counter this threat.

Recoilless Rifles have long been out of the active US inventory, and the serial numbers of those given away would be still on paper (rather than digitized). The 2001 Jane's Infantry Weapons says the M67 was still in service with Guatemala, Honduras & Mexico, so I'd guess the serial number would track to one delivered to them.

If you ever watch video or look at pictures of the drug war in Mexico, you'll notice some pretty heavy weapons. This is a war being waged with rockets and plastic explosives, not pea shooters and Saturday Night Specials * You can't buy this stuff at a U.S. gun store. So where do the cartels get it?

According to leaked diplomatic cables, there are three sources.
1. U.S. Defense Department shipments to Latin America, known and tracked by the U.S. State Department as "foreign military sales."
2. Weapons ordered by the Mexican government, tracked by the State Department as "direct commercial sales."
3. Aging, but plentiful ****nals of military weapon stores in Honduras, Guatemala and Nicaragua.

I doubt that these are Mexican stock recoiless rifles, as the Mexican army keeps very tight control over their weapons, especially heavy weapons. Even their old retired weapons are kept under tight control. Have you ever seen an old Mendoza machine gun in narco hands?

Caltrops, Someones going Old Skool in Anti- Vehicular Pursuit tactics

Drug traffickers in my area often use caltrops to evade the police and border patrol when being chased. It gives them enough distance from law enforcement to drive the entire vehicle with the load into the Rio Grande and swim back across the border into Mexico without getting caught.

Yep, the US has been selling Bazookas since at least 1968. I've seen pictures of Mexican troops with Mendoza's and Bazookas during the Tlatelolco massacre. It's very possible that Mexico had been getting them since their involvment in world war two though.

thanks, I know to some it may sound like I am insulting by asking about older era weapons being used in Mexico but I don't mean it that way, my thing is just knowing if they are still in use somewhere and for my limited Knowledge its Israel and Mexico...and I am pretty sure Israel doesn't have any of our WWII stuff left...

Been like 6 months since i viewed this thread the last time. doesn't look like much has changed though.

But who's winning? any noticable impact being made on the cartels? Any changes in recruitment\numbers and quality on the cartel members?

I think you got your info from a very bad source. In Chihuahua the Sinaloa cartel is fighting the Juarez and Zeta cartel alliance. All the cartel ''CEOs'' are Mexican nationals, I doubt you will ever see a foreign cartel boss.

Possession of illegal firearms can go from 2 to 7 years.
Drugs can go up to 13 years.

One thing is for sure, the Mexican Police and Army do not have to purchase any magazines for their weapons. (unless they want P-MAGS!?) The cartels have taken care of that!

This vehicles are generally bought legally on the agency and then armoured in some of the many companies on the border, but is not something that a couple of 40mm grenades cant manage.

A year or 2?

Possession of a firearm exclusive to the armed forces alone weighs in at at least five years, organized crime charges such as drug smuggling, extortion, and all the other charges a sicario can win themselves would add up to around 30 something years when they are convicted, not counting murder charges.

The shortest prison sentence for manslaughter was 3 years, the murderer was a U.S citizen.

The reason I asked is because a while back I read some article about some RPG-7's going missing from the Honduran ****nal. They said only 22 of them went missing. Not sure if that was launchers or rounds or how they tallied that loss. There's got to be more than that in Mexico, though.

No, the beltfed is a 7.62 NATO M-60, probably US surplus supplied to the Mexican military (if anyone bothered to check the serial numbers) and subsequently acquired by the Narcoguerillas.

This is a 1919A4 http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/5096/belranez4.jpg
as show in post #1703
If fully automatic, it's probably ex-Mexican military. If semi-auto only, it was smuggled in from the US.

Yes because the weapons the cartels are arming themselves with are somehow less powerful than a G-3 or FX-05... Forget the .50cal (12.7x99) rifles they have, along with many other .308/7.62x51 guns; lord knows the FX-05 is magical... So as long as the cartels are running rampant and corrupting the military/police, its really not a problem unless they find a G-3. /which I'm sure they have. In some cases the cartels (hence CORRUPTION) work jointly with some members of the police/military/government to acquire certain things and act with impunity to the law.

As for simply looking at the camo at the truck as the way to 'fool civilians' here in the US its easier to spot government vehicles by their license plates. In fact no bull-****, some of our 'Army National Guard' recruiter cars/trucks have a dorky looking camo on them that looks almost identical to that pic. But any redneck can paint their truck brown/green/tan, its the license plate that gives them away though. ;-) Not all military personnel drive around in tanks, APCs, and HMMWVs all day, sometimes it will be just a regular looking sedan. That's just here in the US though, I'm sure Mexico may have some other uniformed way of keeping track of their military vehicles than just painting them all green or w/e.

Not trying to bash ya, just trying to inform.

One way or another they are creative mofo's, It wont be a problem at all making phony government license plates. As for the G-3 meh dont matter if they got their hands on them or not, you make a good point.

I don't think you got my meaning, T-5 did however. Like he said, I was referring not to the power of the weapon, but the ability of organized crime to pass itself off as either army, navy or federal police. They might be able to paint a truck "similarly" to the army's digital pattern, and they might be wearing some sort of camo uniforms and some body armor, but up till now, and it has been a while now (disproving your theory that they can get Mexican army weapons) they have not been able to get their hands on Mexican army G-3s or the newer FX-05. If you ever see a guy in uniform standing there with an AK-47, in likelyhood, he's a fake. Besides, it's not how powerful your gun is, it's about knowing how to use it, and in most encounters between the Mexican army or marines and the cartels, it's the drug dealers that end up loosing.
In regards to vehicle identification, all Mexican military vehicles display a large serial number on the side with which it may be identified. There are also other details on the vehicles themselves that can make them recognizable to the trained eye.
Don't worry, didn't feel bashed at all.

I would assume Uniforms are also regulated as well right? I would love to get a set of Mexican army digi camo for my collection.

I think that they are regulated, since I've never seen a civilian wearing any sort of clothing item in the digital pattern. I think that they have tighter rules regarding that nowadays in order to avoid the cartels manufacturing copies. Personally, I'd like to get my hands on something with the marine digital pattern.

I wish the photos where better. If they are select fire they are not sold in gun stores in the states. If you know what you are looking for, select fire AR and AK have some extra holes in the receiver.

Great Catch, where ever those firearms come from, I hope they plug the hole.

In my personal opinion, I wouldve liked for all Mexican drug cartels to be wiped out off the map, but thats just wishful thinking; In reality The Sinaloa cartel is & will be the most dominant Cartel in the American continent as long as they are hand to hand with big politicians anything can go their way.

Pretty much this. The zetas are basically dead men walking as everyone is targeting them for their brutality. Each time a new armed group rises, they want to battle the zetas. While the sinaloa cartel has been well grounded for years and has deep roots of corruption in the government.

I agree, the fact that the Zetas have become extra-brutal in the way that they operate, makes them into the biggest threat for stability in Mexico, and thus, a priority for eradication.

In my book it doesn't really matter if they are select fire or not, they are just as deadly.

Is it just me or do the cartels seem to have a lot of early model M-16s? Seems like any rifle which isn't a Kalashnikov is an M-16 or M-16A1.
