June 28, 2004 — KABUL (*******) - American special forces captured two Taliban leaders in southern Afghanistan in raids on their compounds at the weekend, the U.S. military said Monday.

Spokeswoman Master Sergeant Cindy Beam named the men as Abdul Hafiz Majid and Mohammad Daud.

"Coalition Special Operations Forces raided two anti-coalition compounds and captured two top enemy leaders in missions conducted pre-dawn Saturday in southern Afghanistan," she said in a statement.

"We have evidence indicating that they were supplying arms to insurgents, conducting rocket attacks on (the) military, attacking non-governmental aid organizations helping Afghanistan build a national infrastructure, funding ambushes and trafficking opium."

Beam gave no precise location for the raids.

"During the mission, the enemy regional leaders surrendered as coalition SOF (special operations forces) surprised the insurgents."

Abdul Latif Hakimi, who claims to speak for Afghanistan's ousted Taliban regime, said the commanders were not senior figures within the movement, which has waged a bloody insurgency since being overthrown by U.S.-led forces in late 2001.
The level of violence has increased in recent weeks as elections approach in September.

Remnants of the Taliban and Islamic militant allies including al Qaeda oppose the polls, and have been behind a wave of attacks that have claimed well over 800 lives since August.

On the contrary USA32, we NEED prisoners.......In fact "prisoner snatches", although highly risky, have been conducted at many times by many different SOF groups.......They can often as not end up in disaster but prisoners can be so highly valuable that often it is worth the risk........Im glad that these two bastard Talib commanders are now in the hands of intel officers and being groomed for interogation.....Hopefully, it will result in more Talib worthless foot soldiers being killed and more high value "officers" being captured an so on and so on........hehehe.........

I remmember the good old days of Vietnam when SOF groups would simply waite alnog a trail and try to snatch the last man or any stragglers in VC columns.......Needless to say, this was highly risky but there are numerous cases of these snatches ending up in some remarbale intelligance finds..........

Unfortunately, with the current climate of treating prisoners with all the respect due of the pope, it'll be difficult to coherce useful information from prisoners.

God what's next, are we going to provide salaries to prisoners based on rank as specificed in the Geneva convention ? That is in the Geneva convention, go check if you don't believe me ;)

I'm a firm believer in torture and I do believe it can be effective in loosening tongues if applied properly.

The US Military needs a dedicated interrogation branch that specializes in "intelligence extraction". The monkeys in charge of the Iraqi prison were amateurs - they should have never been left in charge. After all, intelligence is only useful to the intelligent ;)
