A Sri Lankan Army handout picture shows troops engaged in clearing operations in captured areas from the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) recovered a stock of light aircraft accessories and parts which were covered in polythene and buried within a large coconut grove at Puthukkudiyiruppu east area in Mullaitivu 384 kms north-east of Colombo, on 13 May 2009. Sri Lanka Army recovered 18 claymore mines concealed inside a motor workshop in the city. Meanwhile in the North the LTTE has apparently concealed all these material underground for use at a later date. But now being confined to a thin land area less that 3 sq.kms, the separatist have been almost beaten by the government forces which are gunning for the leaders. Wednesdays recovery included one four cylinder engine, three propellers, one aircraft radio set, five aircraft main wheels, three nose wheels, two partly-used main wheels, four pilot headphones, three battery chargers, three digital meters, three computer graphic manuals, ground marshalling torches, flying (aerial) computers, two flying simulation units, twenty-three runway lights, four head lights, two ordinary runway lights, bolts, transmitters, flying maps, three marine radars, thirty-five high speed boat engines, one water scooter laden with explosives and one aircraft towing carrier. The LTTE was the only terrorist outfit in the world to have possessed ground, sea and air power. Two light aircraft which flew to Colombo for attacks were shot down by the military early this year. There were earlier instances when several attacks were mounted using light aircraft on the city as well as the military headquarters in Vavuniya

This is Lt. Gail Halverson.... the "Candy Bomber" of the Berlin Airlift. I've met him.... what a guy ! One of the Best of his generation....

Between the years of 1948 and 1949 Berlin Airlift pilot Lt. Gail Halvorsen was so struck with the friendliness and excitement of the Berlin children that he wanted to do something special for them and to spread a little cheer to their beleaguered times in Berlin during the blockade.

Lt. Halvorsen decided to start his own operation which he called "Operation Little Vittles". He practically bought out all the candy available where he was based and out of strips of cloth created miniature parachutes and attached the candy to them. At the beginning, Lt. Halvorsons buddies gave up their rations of candy and gum and also their handkerchiefs to help the cause.

The American Confectioners Association asked Lt. Halvorsen how much candy and gum he could use. They sent tons of candy and gum to Westover AFB for processing. 22 schools in Chicopee Massachusetts converted an old fire station into a Little Vittles headquarters. They made parachutes, tied on candy or gum and sent the finished product to Lt. Halvorsen at Rhine Main AFB. When the supplies came on line at Rhine Main all of Lt. Halversons squadron and others helped drop the candy and gum. They then air dropped the candy over the city of Berlin (including East Berlin until the Russians told them to stop ) to the eagerly waiting children. By January of 1949 Lt. Halvorsen had air dropped more than 250,000 parachutes loaded with candy on the city of Berlin bringing a little joy to the nearly 100,000 children of Berlin during the Russian blockade.
