Maggie and John Anderson of Chicago vowed four months ago that for one year, they would try to patronize only black-owned businesses. The "Empowerment Experiment" is the reason John had to suffer for hours with a stomach ache and Maggie no longer gets that brand-name lather when she washes her hair. A grocery trip is a 14-mile odyssey.

Ok, this in my opinion is seriously racist...not patronizing a merchant because of their skin color, or to spin it another direction, to only buy from a merchant because he or she is black. People are certainly free to spend their money how they please, but where is the outrage? The backlash?
Where is the ACLU?

At one time blacks were not allowed to shop at white only stores, this is a fact that needs to be addressed, and has been. Could you imagine if some dirtbag refused to serve someone, or sell to someone because of their skin color? Intolerable and no excuse...and here we are promoting the same policy, just in the other direction.

Why is a racist movement being promoted as empowerment?

Racism is only racism when whites target coloured people. Which is basically saying that whites are superior and racist just again.

Buy black or buy white makes no difference, they are all made in China, the only ones you are truly helping are the Chinese.

So...are you disputing the story? Or, are you just taking a shot at Fox News?

And don't be silly seraosha. Black people can't be racists.

^---- Me too!

Actually, it's the double standard that makes me lose respect for "the oppressed"'s original complaint.

Though, if you chain some people together and go around saying "buy blacks", it's suddenly racist.

You're missing the nuance. They very well may be racists, but what they're trying to do isn't racist per-se. They aren't telling others where to go and they aid they were trying it for a year. It's not much different than an observant Muslim or Jew buying only Halal or Kosher products; their choice of stores is naturally limited.

There is a difference in buying religious products and picking up lumber.

Its very sad that racism seems to prevail.

I considered the kosher/halal angle, but thats primarily for meats, not their entire diet...likewise shampoo, physicians, car repair, etc...

If it's racist for a white to be prejudiced against a black, why isn't it racist when a black is prejudiced against a white? That's the double standard I'm having difficulty getting my head around.

its not so much about racism as it is about promoting black owned business/black produced products.....

maybe if none of the business's in your community were owned by the people that overwhelmingly populated it you would be equally as "racist".

I'm guessing the people that are complaining about the double standard also think people shouldn't collect welfare and should pull themselves out of poverty by there own bootstraps. This was probably an exercise in helping that happen, however small of in impact it had.

Whites have a history of racism, you can say white power and be accused of being a racist since the term was used by baby lynching groups like KKK, not because of the definition of "white power". History matters more than the meanings of racial slurs, just wait till the people who's lived through the segregation era dies down, we might see an entire new view of racism.

You can't wipe out racism by creating a secular society all at once and say "hey we're no longer responsible for what we've done". History and hatred still exist.

Consumer's choice.
But we live in a globalized economy where no one product or services is considered truly 'local'.

Best advice: Buy the best product for the best value no matter what origin. Only then you can encourage others to build and produce a better product / service in the future.

My German friend once told me to not buy kebabs from a German guy if I were to visit Germany. "Kebabs made by Germans taste nasty, always buy kebabs from a Turkish guy." he said. I guess he's a racist then.

To think that buying black is any sort of empowerment, is garbage... What is it going to prove? These are people who just want their names in the news....
If I was to buy goods from only white people, I would be called racist.
