I'm not sure if someone would be able to help me out, but I'm going to try anyway. My best friend is almost done with infantry AIT at Ft. Benning and he volunteered to get assigned with the 10th Mountain Div. I've wanted to enlist for sometime, but I needed to get myself out of debt (which I'm almost there, thank God). I plan on starting with a 2 year 11x contract with station of choice, which I was told will be no problem. How could I get on the same unit as my best friend (whom is practically my brother), or would it even be possible? I figured getting an assignment at Ft. Drum would be a start, and I was told by some people that the Army prefers to keep people together because it makes for good unit cohesion. Anyone have any thoughts of suggestions? I appreciate it!

You'll go needs of the Army, there are no guarantees. There really isn't any way to pick your duty station.

I came in on the 11X 2 year tour. It is 2 yrs +. That means Basic, AIT then the 2 years starts.
Choice of duty station is a very common contract bonus. Money is too. I came in and had Airborne school on my contract. So my contract was basic, AIT, Airborne school, then 2 yrs. Contract specifics are definately possible.
You can get assigned to the same duty station.. but pin-point is pretty tuff. If your recruiter has the juice... he can call INF branch and see if they would clear a pin-point assignment to that unit. From there the unit itself would have to bless it. Your buddy may talk his commander into making the same phone calls from that end.
If all else fails, get assigned to that post.. and when you get to the post reception.. have your buddy get his commander to request you. Keep them all in the loop.
All that stuff may not get you squat if your a friggin slug. If your buddy is a solid troop.. and you go through training like your hungry.. your performance will help you get a little consideration. Impress your drills and ask them for some support too. Let them know how hungry you are by soaking up every bit of training and performing above your peers.
Hope that helps.

Thank you much warpig.
My buddy has done excellent thus far, he really puts out and I'm the same way. I take this very seriously and accept nothing other, but to excel because this is really what I want to do.

Don't sweat it. If you need any more help.. PM me.
I helped a couple friends get some pretty cool contract choices when they transitioned from NG to active. The key is always to perform above and beyond, prove it, and get the support of your command. You may have to go through a couple recruiters in the process but the goal is to get you into a unit that you will benefit from as well as be a contribution to.
