Dems red-faced over veteran imposter

Democrats are incensed over how a man duped the party and veterans during the '08 campaign.

WASHINGTON — Rick Strandlof, executive director of the Colorado Veterans Alliance and the man most colleagues knew as Rick Duncan, was front and center during the 2008 political campaigns in Colorado.
He spoke at a Barack Obama veterans rally in front of the Capitol in July, co-hosted several events with then- congressional candidate Jared Polis and attacked Republican Senate candidate Bob Schaffer in a TV ad paid for by the national group Votevets.org (http://votevets.org/).
And the mostly Democratic candidates he supported — looking for credibility on veterans issues and the war — lapped it up appreciatively.
Now, politicians are dealing with news that the man they believed to be a former Marine and war veteran wounded in Iraq by a roadside bomb, in fact, never served in the military — but did spend time in a mental hospital.
Many of the candidates he supported won their elections handily and now say they were defrauded as much as anyone else.
"His fraud is a slap in the face to veterans everywhere and a betrayal to us all," Rep. Polis, a Boulder Democrat, said in a written statement Thursday.
"It sounds like this man had a problem telling the truth and needs help," said Tara Trujillo, a spokeswoman for Sen. Mark Udall, D-Colo.
There is little doubt that Strandlof had a remarkable ability to fool people, something aided by the fact that among his fabrications was his claim that he suffered a severe brain injury, which helped cover behavior that associates now concede was often erratic and strange.
But there were also plenty of signs during much of the time Strandlof was working on behalf of candidates for anyone watching carefully.
CVA wasn't registered as a political organization until well after the campaigns were over, and then only at the state level despite being active in federal campaigns.
And although he claimed to represent 32,000 veterans — the biggest post- 9/11 vets group in Colorado — Strandlof always showed up at events with the same small number of supporters, and there were few concrete signs he represented more than a close circle he had gathered around him.
"Nobody really fully trusted any of those numbers. . . . He had a few dozen people who were helping him out. He claimed to have a huge mailing list that no one ever saw. The VFW, the American Legion, none of those traditional veterans groups had ever heard of him," said one prominent veterans activist who worked for Democratic candidates during the campaign and who spoke on condition of anonymity.
"The veterans community was very protective over him because he had portrayed himself as a wounded veteran. This is someone who claimed spending 18 months undergoing physical rehabilitation after suffering debilitating injuries. . . . You don't go at somebody like that hard," the activist said. "Perhaps we learned a good lesson here."
Republicans say the candidates Strandlof supported are either disingenuous or incompetent.
"I think they owe the people in Colorado an apology," said **** Wadhams, the state GOP chairman. "Somebody who took that kind of prominence in the campaign should have been vetted by the Democrats. Even if they have no idea he was a fraud, I think they bear heavy responsibility."
Strandlof did manage to fool at least one Republican.
Strandlof was on the veterans advisory board for Rep. Doug Lamborn of Colorado Springs in 2007, and he resigned, saying he didn't support the Republican administration's stance on the war.
And Wadhams, who directed Schaffer's campaign, said that Republicans missed a chance as well to uncover Strandlof, conceding that if his fraud had been revealed during the campaign, it would have "severely hurt Udall and other Democrats."
Representatives for both Udall and Polis said Strandlof didn't directly work or volunteer for either campaign.
In Udall's case, Strandlof appeared in an ad paid for by an independent political group that was legally barred from communicating or coordinating with the Democrat's campaign. (Jon Soltz, head of Votevets.org (http://votevets.org/)., said in a statement that his group usually checks the credentials of veterans used in ads but didn't in this case "because he was already a well-established leader of a veterans group in Colorado.")
In Polis' case, the relationship was closer. Strandlof and his group co-hosted what his staff described as "a handful" of events with Polis, including a party highlighting a "Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq" held during the Democratic National Convention.
"There is a lot of hearsay, and Rick Duncan claims he's best buddies with Jared — which is not true," said Polis spokeswoman Lara Cottingham. She said Strandlof came to the campaign offering help, and they were glad to have it.
The Polis and Udall campaigns emphasize that Strandlof was a bizarre exception to the outpouring of help they received from veterans disillusioned with Bush-era policies.
"His actions in no way reflect on the credibility of real veterans who supported Mark's campaign or on the importance of their issues," said Trujillo, Udall's spokeswoman. According to The Associated Press, CVA's board on Wednesday night decided that the group would disband in the wake of news that Duncan was actually Strandlof.

Is this just incomptence or do they really just not care?

That was Hysterical to watch happen.

The Main Issue is the persons who should have been Fellatio instead of born over at IVAW/Votevets. Apparently Vetting to make sure one actually was an Iraq Vet is Low on the priority list. No1 was raging BDS symptoms.

I knew one of iVAW's Members personally. He not only wasnt an Iraq Vet, but never was a NCO as he claimed and wasnt even in the Military by 9-11 due to chronic AWOL. Of course every time he was introduced it was as "Sgt. M Iraq vet, 911 First responder, etc, etc, IVAW" and always Prominently wearing the IVAW T-Shirt. I almost threwup when he would say, "My Fellow Soldiers from the Fighting 69th down at Ground Zero"

Jesse Macbeth, Matthew Chiroux, Jimmy Massey, etc. etc. I have no respect for IVAW or Votevets

Votevets had Commercials running in 2006 with some guy claming outlandish tales of woe in Iraq. Funny thing was his squadmates, NCO's said the Bull**** never happened and he was lying through his teeth

And the Dems who used this guy front and center as a political tool should be continually exposed for the Craven opportunist's they are. Never should it be forgotton they used this Fraud to get into power.

me neither me and my buddy were going through there website one night on comm shop watch during a Mojave Viper at 29 palms and every one on there site was pretty much a pog or someone who sat in the rear, you didnt hear of any 0311's or any other combat arms MOS personel saying anything about the war.

I have also heard that Jon Soltz guy talk before and he is a turd.

The Democrats are like that average to homely girl who lets herself be swept off her feet by a nice looking guy who swears that he loves her. So what, they've known each other for two hours, but she so wants to believe that she's hit the jackpot and he is the real deal. When it ends up being a one niter, she feigns hurt and disbelief, but down inside, she knew it was too good to be true.

The Dems are the same way when they find a real live American hero who embraces pacifism and tells us how he killed innocents and how sorry he is for what he's done. How many of these rats have we seen in recent years? This guy was no different. I think that down inside, the Dems are willing to look beyond what was maybe obvious had they just looked beyond the surface.

i think its still commendable that the dems cared about VETERANS ISSUES. its the frauder who should get punished. that being said, why didn't repubs care about vets ? they did send'em overseas.

Ill bitep-), I care alot about Veterans issues that is why I want a well funded and equiped military. It seems that is all the Democrats do care about is veterans issues, they dont seem to care about equiping them properly or funding them (or supporting them at any level even after the majority of their party voted yes to many of our overseas adventures) , so they have the chance to become veterans after all is said and done

This guy is just a drop in the pond. There were plenty of genuine vets stepping up for the Dems in 2008, and don't let's pretend that the Right doesn't attract its share of wannabes and fakes. Just look at some of the handles and some of the headcases that have been busted here on mp.net...

Reminds me of the couple peices of human debris that were oh so anti war wounded vets that turned out to be turdburlgars with zero military experiance or those with a BCD before they even finished boot. Just typical demoslobik usery for their own ends.. which to them appear to be justified with any means.

Ah, but it will be forgotten. The news won't cover this for more than a day, if at all. And if Republicans try to capitalize on this they'll be painted as "haters" with a very broad brush. Somehow it will be construed as Republicans having no empathy for the mentally ill. Just sit back and watch.

These fraudsters should be exposed, publicly humiliated, fined heavily but not imprisoned. They're not violent criminals but should be fined to the point of starvaton wages. If they are veterans but not what they claim to be, they should then lose all veterans benefits (up to and including any retirement pay).

OR, we get brushed with the "Phoney Soldiers" BS that they tried on Limpbaugh. I got hassled like you wouldnt believe for the ****bag Miller I Knew and could Prove he was a Fraud. Everytime I asked them to check his DD-214 I got told it was a conspiracy, and that I was a Govmint agent worked for Cheney, a Fascist, etc. One woman said I should Kill Myself for having besmirched a fine man. Meanwhile I'm the Iraq Vet with the scars to prove it, and the reduced lung capacity from the pit.

Bizarre

On this I gotta say you hit the nail on the head. The Democratic Party is more than happy to fund veterans programs, but tends to want to slash defense spending. And one thing I want to make clear, when I say Democratic Party, I don't mean everyone in the party, as there are far to many current, and former military personnel, who classify them selves as democrats, to include most of the male members of my family (Grandfather, Father, uncle, two cousins, and a brother), who have honorably served in the military. The grave yards are filled with them.

I would think it is more important to fund defense spending so those men have the chance to become veterans....

John McCain would have cut more spending than Obama you know. Just because spending is cut doesn't mean it actually effects the average infantryman you know.

You know the new Marine One project that's been put on hold? There's a brand new multimillion dollar hangar complex at NAS Pax River in Maryland built specially for them where they were supposed to test, troubleshoot, house, maintain them. There are maintenance sheds and tools, and wider runways, and environmental impact studies and personnel, and lots o' specialists there that are already trained to work on them. Oh well, that money is gone. You could have probably bought exoskeletons for every single Marine and Soldier in harms way for what they already spent on that program. Seriously. How exactly do Democrats spend defense money more stupidly than their counterparts across the aisle.

I've never met a Vet yet that claimed that they suddenly got better service at the VA when a Republican was in charge. Have you? Know any amputees at Walter Reed that liked living with black mold?

honestly i doubt he would becuase he most likly would of been so overwhelmed by events that he could barely function other then maintaining the status quo. This really isnt about moeny though (even though it did trail off onto that... and i still will take a fully funded DOD over a fully funded VA and im speaking as a Marine here.) But that being said the VA needs to be better about sniffing out fraud and abuse becuase when i was going through my out going process a woman from the VA came and told other sericve members that she would get them money and guys i know were fine were going along with her scheme. So I not a big fan of it.

on the subject of the next Marine One replacement i wonder how much money will be pissed away becuase they decided to cancel this one..... i hope Obama's back is good becuase i heard some stories about guys having some bad back problems from a hard landing
