Thousands of Tamil protesters cause gridlock in Parliament Square

Tamil protesters brought Westminster to a standstill today as they called for international intervention in Sri Lanka, where thousands of civilians remain in internment camps.
Protesters from the British Tamil community surged through barriers around Parliament Square and broke through police lines at around 4pm, halting traffic.
An official police estimate put the protest at around 2,000 while officers at the scene suggested that it was much higher.Police were preparing to physically remove the protesters, many of whom were women and children.
Chief Inspector Marshall Kent told The Times: "A surge of about 5,000 protesters lifted the barriers and commenced a sit-down protest. We're going to contain it and then move people very gently back on to the grass area on Parliament Square." There were 42 arrests and some violent clashes when police attempted to move a similar roadblock last Monday.
Many of the protesters held Tamil Tiger flags and chanted "Stop the genocide". Others wore red-stained bandages.
Anupama Velautham, 31, sat with toddlers and an elderly couple on the road surrounded by stationary buses and cars. She said that she feared for her family in the Vanni region of Sri Lanka, having not heard from in three months.
"There is no food, no medicine, no UN members — no one is there," she said. "We want to know what the UN is doing about this. There is no third-party country there. In Kosovo, when people were dying, all the world were there. But whatever is happening in Vanni, no one is listening."
She said that protests and demands for an independent Tamil state would continue. "The Tamil Tigers are our sole representative. It is not going to be over til we get our own nation that is called Tamil Ealam."
Cumar Kailayavasan, 54, said: "Thousands of people were killed by the Sri Lankan Government. We are the minority Tamils, we have no voice. We are asking President Obama to take part and send the necessary troops to protect us and allow us to have our medicine and food. Our Tamil people are suffering."
Mr Kailayavasan, who became a British citizen after moving to the UK in 1976, said that the roadblock was justified. "We have been begging for the last 35 days here and no one took any attention of us."
A spokesman for the British Tamil Students said: "Sri Lanka claims the LTTE [Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam] have been defeated but the oppression and Genocide of the Tamils continues while the international community watches blindly."
Today was the fourth time since April 6 that protesters have blocked the roads around Westminster.

People are getting fed up of these people causing so much hassle for everyone just attempting to get to and from work.Instead of disrupting people's lives,they should make as strong a representation as possible to the United Nations or other relevant international organisations.
