Welsh SAS sergeant among Iraq body count
Jun 28 2004
David Williamson, The Western Mail
A WELSH SAS officer was killed when the convoy he was travelling in was attacked by a mob in Baghdad.
Sergeant Julian Davis, from Newport, was working with a private security agency training Iraqi police. It is understood he was on an officially sanctioned leave of absence.
He was among 85 people killed in attacks in the Iraqi capital on Tuesday. It is thought that his unmarked vehicle was attacked by followers of rebel leader Abu Masab al-Zarqawi. The killings came as Coalition forces prepare to hand over power to Iraqi authorities.
Sgt Davis, who was unmarried, had been a member of the SAS reserve forces for 15 years and served in Afghanistan and Bosnia.
It was reported that he had been working in the region for 12 months, earning £500 a day. He was well-known as a mountaineer, and had climbed Everest. In civilian life he was a professional mountain guide and an outdoor sports instructor.

We should not mourn his loss, but be greatful that such men lived.
Well said.......but interesting that he was on "official leave" and not "retired".......Some secret squirrel stuff going on or is he just trying to make a little extra money in between???.........
More likely he was up to something..........I cant see him being on temporary leave just so he can make L500 a day for a bit......although if rumors are true the SAS is worried about losing people to PSD work.........(just kidding so dont flame me Argyll...!!!!)
Although that would be a good solution wouldnt it?? I mean "hey lads come serve in Iraq and we will let you work the PSD seen during your leave and make as much in a month as you would make in a year here.....hows that?"...... Well I dont think any blokes would be calling that a non-starter now would they???
Anyway, RIP....15 years is a good bit of time......The SAS has lost skills and XP it will never regain from that tragedy I am sure.....very tragic to see the great men fall to the scum...........

The man was NOT a member of 22 SAS,he belonged to one of the territorial Battalions, possibly 23 SAS which meant he was a civilian, and free to be employed here.......official leave means he was given a leave of absence from his civilian occupation to come here..........there is nothing sinister in this story at all........regular Military personnel are forbidden to be employed in any other occupations,it's against QR's.
Territorials are the same as National Guard.....Civilians who turn into weekend warriors......there are plenty of such guys with 23 SAS out here........I work with 3 of them, they still have to do Selection as sorts.

Sad message :
REGIMENTAL PRAYER
Almighty, merciful, and loving Father,
you are the one who hears all our prayers and grants our petitions.
We ask you to remember, as we do,
the tremendous sacrifice made by those who went before us.
They have given their lives so that we might live and breathe freely.
We ask you to receive them into your hands.
Father, give us the strength and wisdom to learn from their example,
to uphold freedom and life at home and around the world.
Keep us vigilant as we guard the frontiers of freedom.
Give our leaders the wisdom and the strength to lead well.
Grant all of us courage and confidence.
Be, for all of us, troopers, a wise counsel in keeping peace
and a strong shield for us against our enemies.
Oh heavenly Father, give us the determination
that the peace and freedom won at such a high price be lasting!
Father, hold all of the troopers in the palm of your almighty hand
and protect them in the shadow of your wings.
Amen.
