dutch mess kit - rust and stains

Hi there

I recently found a dutch military mess kit. It has some minor stains and rust inside the pots. I was just wondering if I can sand it away or not? I mean, is it gonna destrog the surface of the pots? I dont want them to rust even more!

You should be able to scrub it with some steel wool to get the worst of the rust off, then put a light coating of cooking oil to stop it rusting. What material is the mess kit made off? Obviously not aluminium if its rusting.

A little rust is good for you. We all can use more iron in our diet.
