Yeah, where's the airsoft guys? ;)

Seriously though, I thought they were still subject to a 1999 US arms embargo and with them buying up quite alot of Eastern European (read Russian) gear I'm really surprised the POLISI are running around with M4's.

Can anyone shed any light on the matter? Cheers.

Also, terimah kasih to masABRI for posting the pics and WELCOME!

Great to have a poster from Indonesia. woot

I've been to both Jakarta and Surabaya and would like to ask a question if anyone knows. Now, there is usually an uniformed soldier with an AR posted at the driveways of major hotels. These guys oversee the private security doing the actual security checks for inbound vehicles. Are they from a certain unit or from several different? I remember seeing parachute wings on some guys but was too preoccupied with other things to concentrate on that.

Halo Garoco...terima kasih for the welcome : )

Since the 9/11 event the US goverment establish cooperation with the Indonesian Police to fight terorism....especialy because there's a few local islamic militant group such JI (Jemaah Islamiah) & the group that bombed the JW Marriot Jakarta hotel.....

fortunately only the police who enjoy the benefit of this US cooperation, unlike the army, navy & the air force who still suffering from the embargo

ok..i hope that explain a bit how we got the M-4

The unifrmed soldier doing security checks are the result of the J.W Marriot hotel bombing back in August 2003....the bomber pack an SUV full with explosive than detonate it in front of the hotel....aftewards all the major hotels, shopping centers & office buildings are now guarded by police / soldier with rifles

masABRI:

Thanks for the information. Wonder how the bomber got through the traffic jams in Jakarta without losing his nerve. Btw, ever been to eat at "Chopstix" in the "Plaza Indonesia" mall? Best fried noodles with seafood I've ever had, although I'm sure some of the street kitchens in the suburbs chunk out better food.

Anyone know what Indonesia is doing to fight piracy and maritime drug smuggling? I know Indonesia has many specialised units, I am curious to see how these issues are being addressed.

Damn corrupt country. From the top govt official to the armed forces, police and to the custom, there is rampant corruption. Never even want to go there even it just 30 minutes boat ride for me.

From what i know, indonesia navy is ill equiped to deal with piracy.
