Hello everyone, I know there are currently many thread on the situation of the North Korean provocations, but I was wondering what are the Korean and Japanese views on these things? So many of the American responses in these threads amount to "nuke 'em" and other simplistic statements (except for the one thread showing the AA defenses around pyongyang) and I really want to get some input by others.

In Turkey we viewed our soldiers who went to defend South Korea during the Korean war as honored people even to this day and they are an important part of our cultural heritage. So probably whatever South Korea decides to do will be backed up by Turkey.

One thing for sure about Japan is that they are overreacting and over-frustrated, way way more than ROK.

Analysts beleives that North Korea has currently aimed against Japan about 200 balistic missiles, they are called Nodong and Pyongyang use this type of missile primarily against Japanese territory, probably against U.S. bases and perhaps big cities as a deterrent. Those missiles are based primarily on 2 of North Korea's eastern regions and are exposed to enemies first strikes.
North Korea's capabilities to inflict heavy casualties to Japan are beleived to be far low than South Korea's obviously and the country is protected by efficient countermeasures that together with U.S. support could largely limit the damages.
North Korea's capability to launch a nuclear strike against Japan is beleived to be unconcrete by any means.

Actually for the 2nd time, lawmakers and politicians are promoting changes in the Japan's defensive military approaches asking to adopt a preemptive strike capability (primarily sea based) able to destroy possible missile sites that could be used to attack the country.

Japan reacted obviously with a serious posture during the last April North Korea's missile test launch as it violated Japan's air space and foremost it's security.

The Japanese governement is moving causosly and with responsability together with it's partners, trying to persuade Pyongyang to return to the talks.

Actually its been pretty quiet here with only minimal airtime given to the story on the NHK TV news. To put it in perspective, there was recently far more coverage given to the arrest of a pop singer for being discovered naked in a park in the middle of the night. We got hourly breaking updates on that one, but to find out anything about this North Korean issue beyond the recent nuke test, we have to go look for it on the net.

Actually, its been so quiet that I am suspicious that there is a conscious attempt not to give this story too much exposure here.

Actually there is covarage, with minor details than the April missile test for several reasons...Japan will be the lesser involved in such a conflict.

South Korea has not that much for overreact indeed...

People were really stirred up and overreracting to the the April missile test with all the news coverage talking about a possible shootdown and showing PAC-3 missile transporters rolling around and being emplaced.

If a situation of the like would happen in Italy I don't know what could happen then...in Italy we have class A incompetent service news.

and people everywhere is easily prey of panic in such events...

And you know Japan what country/system is...they take anything with responsability and seriousness...wich is Good.

I sort of know what you mean. I worked as a foreign correspondent in Korea and every time North Korea shot off a missile or rattled its chains, the Japanese yen would tumble while the Korean won was pretty much unscathed in the currency markets. We really had to push traders and analysts to explain why the won is shrugging off the N. Korea threat and it seemed like for the most part, Koreans have learned to live with it and even to an extent, tune it out.

That last part is interesting. Why do you think they are?
