So the new 2005 Jeep GC has a 5.7 HEMI option w/325hp - 370lb-ft. The new MDS (multi-displacement system) aternates the vehicle between 4 (fuel economy) and 8 (hemi power) cylinders.
Anyone with experience with a similiar system?
FYI they are finally letting out the diesels in the US markets.

I'm currently trying to purchase a crate engine for my Jeep Wrangler and this guy who I was talking to about it has a HEMI in his Wrangler!

I totally agree with your comment. A Hemi in a Jeep? Someone must be turning in their graves! For the kind of HP they are talking about it better come with a good transmission if it's going to be used in 4x4 situations..

Why on earth would someone need all that power in a Jeep? Any pics of the new Jeep?

Why on earth would someone need all that power in a Jeep? Any pics of the new Jeep? towing capacity - although I do not need that kind of power, nor would I need that kind of engine. I am more interested in the Diesel being released in the US. I am curious to the system that the HEMI will be using and am curious about the gas mileage.
and it looks 99% the same as the last GC's.

Well the fact is that the GC (and most SUVs) are nothing more than glorified station wagons - so the hemi would be right at home. Got to keep up with the Joneses 350hp Lexus SUV you know. :)
It's got to be a nasty squeeze to get that thing in the engine bay. It's a pushrod motor (narrower than OHV), but it still has to be a nightmare to work on. They prolly just drop the damn thing out to work on it!
Yeah, it's the same variable displacement system used on the new 300 - good write-up in last months' Car & Driver.

The diesel should be pretty sweet for the off road Wrangler crowd.

the JEEP nothing more than a glorified station wagon? BULL****
for many SUV's that is true - jeeps were desinged to be Jeeps - last year they were jeeps 20 years ago they were jeeps - if you buy a Jeep to keep up with the Jones your ride is going to suck!
for many companies their SUV's were minivans - pickups and even the hinda civic - but now with different bodies.
