Argentina gets OPVs, LSD and updates Portuguese sub
1. The Argentinian Navy has selected the NPO-2000 design for its OPV program. Four ships will be built in Argentina, in the AFNE and Domecq Garcia yards. Apart from an ice-strengthened hull and a hangar for a light helicopter, these ships should be similar to those being built for the Portuguese Navy. The other design in competition was a 1200-ton proposed by Spain's Izar.
2. The Argentinian yard Domecq Garcia, which is specialized in submarines, has resumed activity recently, and one of his future customers will be the Portuguese submarine NRP Barracuda. She'll be retained until 2009, when the first U214 SSK will be commissioned and will therefore be modernized, in Argentina. This should pay for at least part of the NPO-2000 deal.
3. France will grant the Argentinian Navy the LSD Orage. Her new name will be ARA Giachino, in tribute of Argentina's first hero during the Falkland/Malvinas 1982 war. Captain Pedro Giachino was an amphibious commando (Buzo Tactico) killed during the taking of the Government Buildings in Port Stanley/Puerto Argentino.
