RUSSIA successfully test-launched three missiles today, firing one from a nuclear submarine and another from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Russian media reported.

The Defence Ministry confirmed that the Yekaterinburg submarine fired a RSM-54 missile from the Barents Sea to the Kura testing ground in Kamchatka, about 7000 kilometres to the East. The ITAR-Tass news agency, citing the Defence Ministry, said the missile hit its target 28 minutes after its 11.25am (5.25pm AEST) launch.

Meanwhile, Russia's Tu-95MS strategic rocket-carrying aircraft also successfully launched a cruise missile at a target on the remote Novaya Zemlya archipelago in the Arctic, ITAR-Tass reported. The plane left Engles airbase in the Saratov region and flew 3000 kilometres to carry out its mission, ITAR-Tass said.

And a RS-20 heavy intercontinental ballistic missile, known in the West as the SS-18 Satan, was also successfully launched from Russia's Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, the Interfax-Military news agency reported. That launch was made to test whether the service life of the missile, which can carry 10 nuclear warheads, could be extended beyond its current 20 years, Interfax said.

ITAR-Tass said the launches were conducted as part of a military training exercise, known as Mobility 2004, which is winding down in Russia's Far East.

then you should read about the previous Balistic Missile tests.. Putin stood for 20 minutes onboard a cruiser to witness the launch from a SSBN. And the missile failed ;) the next one was controll-detonated in mid flight when it left the projected trajectory.

Compare this to the Trident test score.. surrenctly it is like more then 90 tests without a failure.. if I remember correctly.

Huh? That's not supposed to happen. Current treaties says all MIRV equipped ICBMs must be retired or converted to single warhead systems. We're getting rid of all our Peacekeepers for that reason.

Current treaties are not ratified by the US. The ABM treaty was the basis for the START treaties and now that it no longer exists the START II treaty becomes flexible. The original wording of the START II treaty was that high throw weight missiles must be withdrawn and remaining missiles must have one warhead. This would mean the SS-18 would have to be withdrawn due to its high throw weight (allowing up to 30 warheads, but normally fitted with 10 due to arms limitations treaties). Topol is also being produced with single warheads instead of the design number of 3 warheads. The collapse of the START II, which the US congress refused to sign but the Russians have signed, but more importantly now that the ABM treaty is no more it is no longer able to be a valid document. If the US had signed it Russia wold have been bound by it, but they haven't and wont. So it seems the Russians will keep at least some of their SS-18s and probably add new warheads to their Topols.

BTW there were few problems with their SS-18s and TOPOLs.

To save money the Russians are thinking of putting three warheads in their Topol missiles to maintain warhead numbers with as few missiles as possible.


And the missile failed the next one was controll-detonated in mid flight when it left the projected trajectory.

Amusing that Western companies use Russian SLBMs for launching satellites... such an expensive item as a satellite trusted to such an unreliable launch method... wonder why they would take such risks... unless it was at least as reliable as Western launch systems but much cheaper.
