Not a good idea . Period .
Sorry , dude , but that's not very proffesional .
Forecast International Group do this every year , and it is the biggest pile of bull**** . They do it for people who don't understand **** about tanks .
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NEWTOWN, Conn. --- In light of the global war on terror and Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Forecast International Weapons Group has re-evaluated its annual ranking of the world's best main battle tanks.
With an unmatched combat record in Operation Desert Storm (1991) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-present), the M1A1 Abrams by General Dynamics Land Systems Division has clearly proven itself to be the premier main battle tank in service today. Based on its combat debut with the U.S. 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized) during Operation Iraqi Freedom, the M1A2 SEP (System Enhancement Package) Abrams now sets the international standard for
main battle tank performance.
"With the demands of the global war on terror, we no longer have the luxury of evaluating weapons systems solely on their performance in the safe confines of a training environment," said Dean Lockwood, author of the Forecast International rankings. "For man and machine alike, combat has a way of revealing previously unknown strengths and weaknesses," Lockwood said.
When viewed through the prism of actual combat performance, the annual main battle tank ranking takes on a radically different character from years past. The Israel Ordnance Corps Merkava Mark IV moves up to second place in the Forecast International ranking. Although generally considered to be outside the mainstream of international tank development, the Merkava
series is uniquely suited for the demands of the Israeli security
environment. Like the M1A1 Abrams, the Merkava can boast a proven combat record.
Japan's Type 90, by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, maintains its third-place position on the Forecast International list. Drawing heavily on German Leopard 2 technology, the Type 90 is arguably the most technologically advanced main battle tank in service today. However, the Type 90 suffers from being untried in combat. As such, its performance remains essentially theoretical. For the same reason, the Krauss-Maffei Wegmann Leopard 2A6 falls to fourth place. The oft-praised advanced features of the Leopard 2 and the integration of the Rh 120/55 main armament simply cannot compensate for the fact that the Leopard 2A6 remains untested in the crucible of combat.
Fifth place on the Forecast International ranking belongs to the British Challenger 2 by Vickers Defence Systems Division. Like the Abrams, the Challenger 2 has earned a solid combat record during Operation Iraqi Freedom. In comparison with the other tanks on this list, however, the Challenger 2 suffers from the lack of NATO-standard ordnance. Should the U.K. Ministry of Defence adopt the NATO-standard 120mm Rh 120 ordnance as part of the Challenger Lethality Improvement Program (CLIP), the Challenger 2 will likely take over second place on this list.

Javehn I actually didn't believe people were going to post "the best tank" rather I just wanted people to post pictures of tanks from their country but it would still be cool since there would be pictures of tons of different tanks. ;)

Well , then you can name your thread "Your country tank" .
It would be more suitable and correct . :)

I didn't ment to . :)
The reason is you cannot compare the 3 generation tanks (MBT's) , because they are too much similar to diffirentiate . There are unic designes like for example Merkava , or Leclerc (with too much Electronics on board :) ) , but they are too much allike .
And it's just safe recepy for pissing contest this forum is so famous of (in many other forums  ) .

Javehn I didn't change it because the tanks are similar but that people would probably just post pictures of tanks from their country anyway.

Coyote is a 'recce' vehicle you can put a Mast on it and boom u got eyes for the next 24KM
Cougar is the reserve version of a 'tank' its main purpose is mostly for training but it was called in to help with the UN in bosina

Our Leopard AS1s are on the way out now that we have decided to go with the Abrams. I still don't care what anyone says though ... German made tank still dominates the "most photogenic" category.
Some of these are mine while others were taken by guys who work with me. They are all now copyright of the Australian Defence Force.

Well first of all, we don't have Leopard Is, just Leo 2A4s, T72M1s and T55Ms (modernized; Finnish-made firecontrol systems).
The T55s are more like infantry support guns nowadays and I guess now that we have Leopards and the T55 are being removed from service the T72s will inherit their mission.

There was a T55, than T65, than a T72, after that a T80. But i heared that the T90/T92 is a modern Version (upgraded) of the T72? Right or not? And what comes after the T92? Any planes for a T100 or somethin'? I think there was a rumor about a T80U Black Eagle or stuf..... can anyone explain the correct Versions to me?
I think 'twas more like T-54 and T-55, very similar. Then the T-62.
An advanced tank T-64. Then came the T-72 to replace the T-62/55/54. and then came T-80 to replace T-64.
Spain should upgrade their M-60's like Israel did... :)

HEADLINE: In Bosnia, U.N. Troops Finally Go to War;
After Serb Shelling, Frustrated Danish Tank Crews Punch Back
DATELINE: TUZLA, Bosnia, May 4
When Serb fighters shelled an isolated U.N. observation post near here last Friday, it was an unremarkable event. In nearly two years of U.N. operations in Bosnia, this country‘s combatants have routinely shelled, sniped and humiliated U.N. soldiers -- even sometimes robbing them at gunpoint of their weapons and uniforms.
But Friday night, the Serb fusillade elicited a U.N. response more incendiary than the usual verbal protest. A cigar-chomping, karate-kicking Danish officer, Lt. Col. Lars Moller, ordered his white-painted Leopard tanks to fire back at the Serb artillery position. By dawn, the Danish army had fought its fiercest battle since the Nazi invasion of 1943 -- and Moller had shown that the United Nations need not always retreat in the face of frequent military challenges by the Serbs.
Moller, who speaks fluent English with the accent of Sean Connery and the slang of a U.S. Marine, said his tour in the Balkans has taught him that "if you are scared down here, you‘re going to get kicked. That‘s the way it works." In Bosnia‘s civil war, he said, "all sides are full of a lot of macho bull. . . . You have to adjust your behavior accordingly."
The Danes‘ destruction of a Serb artillery position underscored the dilemma of U.N. peacekeeping. U.N. soldiers and foreign aid workers here often express frustration with the U.N. forces‘ passivity in the face of provocations. But the Danes‘ momentary aggressiveness was similar to that attempted as policy -- and abandoned in frustration -- by last year‘s peacekeeping mission in Somalia.
Moller, for example, does not view his troops‘ riposte, in the end, as a victory. Despite his own version of macho bluster, he sees it as a defeat.
By finally shooting back, Moller and his troops destroyed bridges of confidence and trust that they painstakingly had built to the Serb side. The Danes had built a four-mile road for Serb children to use in walking to school from the nearby village of Pelemsi, so they would remain safe from Muslim shelling. They had arranged shipments of diesel fuel to Serb road repair crews and seeds to Serb farmers.
But, Moller said, given the bellicose psyche of this region, its deadly macho games of chicken and its adoles cent tests of strength, he cannot regret giving the order to fire.
"The U.N. should not bow its head to any of these people," he said. "Once you do that, you lose your dignity and, even worse, the other guy will keep walking over you. In the Balkans, you‘ve gotta stand tall."
Standing tall has been difficult for the Nordic Battalion -- a U.N. unit composed of 1,753 Swedes, Danes, Norwegians and Dutch -- that is based around the Muslim-held region of Tuzla. Over the last two months, Serb gunfire has destroyed four of the battalion‘s armored personnel carriers. By luck -- an open safety hatch here, a poorly aimed rocket there -- no one has been killed.
Although the Serb attacks have grown intense, the U.N. political command in Zagreb, Croatia -- directed by special envoy Yasushi Akashi -- has rejected at least four of the battalion‘s requests for NATO planes to fly close air support for U.N. troops here, Moller said.
In one incident, on March 18, Serb fighters destroyed a Swedish armored personnel carrier with an antitank missile and six tank rounds in the northern town of Gradacac. Moller reported it, clearly blaming the Serbs -- but U.N. officials in Zagreb contended that the source of the attack was unknown. On April 14, Serb artillery shelled Tuzla‘s airport for four hours, in violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution ordering the Serbs to allow the airport to open or risk NATO airstrikes. Since the shelling, the airport has remained closed.
But on Friday, the United Nations‘ response came not from Zagreb or New York. It came from the Danish soldiers in their 43-ton, German-built Leopard tanks, the most advanced weapons system of the meager U.N. arsenal in Bosnia.
Since the Leopards arrived in the Balkans in the middle of last year, they have been a target of the Serbs. For four months, as the United Nations tried to move the tanks here through Serbia, the government there held them up outside Belgrade.
Finally, the United Nations sent them to Split, Croatia, and drove them to Tuzla in March. Since then, the Serb forces that ring the Tuzla region have declared open season on the Leopards. Danish army Maj. Carsten Rasmussen, who commands the tank squadrons, said Serbs had fired on the tanks a dozen times. Once, he said, in early April, the Danes fired back destroying a Serb bunker and a 40mm antitank gun. It was only a matter of time, Rasmussen said, before a major clash would erupt.
Shortly after 11 p.m. Friday, Serb gunners around Mount Vis, to Tuzla‘s south, opened up on a U.N. observation post called Tango 2. Since October, according to U.N. figures, the Serbs had shelled the post 28 times with 96 shells. As they always do, the Leopards responded.
Moller and his men sped east from Tuzla in seven tanks and two armored personnel carriers. At the village of Saraci, in view of the Serb gunners, the Danes stopped and -- in accord with U.N. rules of engagement -- illuminated their white vehicles with searchlights to let the Serbs know they were there.
The lights drew shellfire. One Serb shell landed 30 feet from Moller‘s vehicle, he said. Others blew metal shrapnel over the tanks.
"At that point we turned the lights off," Moller said. "Goooood thinking, as the Brits say."
With that, Moller‘s Operation Hooligan Buster began in earnest. The Danes had practiced the routine.
Four of the Danish tanks and an armored personnel carrier sped to another village, Kalesija, which was closer to Tango 2.
The Serbs responded by lighting up the night with artillery and rocket fire. An antitank rocket erupted 15 feet behind one tank, Moller recalled.
Arriving in Kalesija, Rasmussen moved two tanks up the hill toward the beleaguered observation post, and placed two others behind houses in the village. Then, the Danes said, the Serbs stepped up the attack, firing 40mm antitank cannons.
By then the Serbs had been firing for 30 minutes, the Danes said. When the troops in Saraci reported that more antitank rockets were on their way, Moller and Rasmussen ordered the three tanks in Saraci to fire warning shots -- four in all. When the Serbs continued the attack, the Danes fired in earnest.
The first round silenced an antitank gun, the second destroyed the post of a forward artillery observer -- and the third plowed through a Serb bunker, the Danes said.
"Things were getting out of hand," Moller said. He and Rasmussen agreed to hold their fire and ensure that Serb shelling of Tango 2 had ceased. After 30 minutes of quiet, the forward tanks began moving back to Saraci -- but the Serbs began attacking them again.
Moller said he "began to get [ticked] off."
The officers ordered the tanks in Saraci to reopen fire. Continuously. For 15 minutes.
One round plowed into a Serb ammunition dump, igniting a massive, concussive blast. Not since a 1943 battle against the Nazis -- and before that an 1864 clash with invading Prussians -- had Danish forces been in such a fight, the Danes reckoned. The two earlier ones, they had lost.
Moller said the Danes spared three Serb T-55 tanks because, while the Leopards‘ infrared detectors found the Serbs‘ aiming systems turned on, they also determined that the enemy tanks‘ barrels were cold. Under the restrictive U.N. rules of engagement, only guns actually caught in act of firing may be hit.
Rasmussen and Moller said Friday‘s ordeal was meant to be a trap for the Danes. "It was an ambush," Moller said. "Tango 2 was the cheese and we were the mouse. Only it turned out that the mouse ate the cat."

a leo 1 belongs in a museum
better have 573 of them stocked, just for the case that they are needed, than melting them down and build souveniers for american tourists...
(also a leo I cannon can destroy your truck or infantry carrier...)
With the new 105mm armour piercing munitions they can also destroy a tank like a T80 or a T72 without problems.....

I must correct some numbers here given by a stupid kiddie :slap: .
stocked germany has 573 Leopard I and 1.552 Leopard II, many oftem were never in use and are only for the case of a big war stocked, germany has _in use_ 850 Leopard II, of them around of 500 are Leopard IIA4, 125 are LeopardIIA5 and 225 are Leopard IIA6, but more will get modernized to A6
today 850 LeoII
350 in 2010 but all A6
1.086 "JPz(JagdPanzer" what means "HuntingTank" these are no main battle tanks and are armed with rockets or cannons
There ist not a single one more!
more than 4000 TPz (Transportpanzer) (transport tanks)
yes but most are m113
468 Wiesel tanks (armed with MK20, TOW, 120mm motars, Stinger etc. recon/medic/guidance verions also in use)
408 FlakPz (flak tanks) Gepard
140 FlaRakPz (fla-rocket tanks) 1 Roland
185 PzH2000 (howitzer tanks)
570 PzHM109 (howitzer tanks) (+506 stocked ones)
These numbers of pieces are considerably reduced or are it already. PzHM109 for example are taken out of service completely and some of the new PzH2000
2136 SPz Marder (infantry carrier tanks)
Today there are a little more than 1100
154 MLRS / MARS (rocket artillery vehicles)
here the armoured vehicles with wheels:
1030 TPz Fuchs (transport tanks)
408 Luchs (recon tanks)
202 Fennek (recon tanks)
388 Mungo (airborne infantry carriers)
16 Duro (multirolevehicle)
199 Dingo/Dingo II (armoured and with MGs/MachineGranadeCannons equiped cars)
Pioneer stuff
300 Minenwerffahrzeuge Skorpion (mine launching tanks)
791 Pioneer/recovery Tanks (differnet kinds)
105 Bridge Laying Tanks
that were all in all the german heavy vehicles
yes but these numbers will reduce too

yes but most are m113
yes I know, and again, that makes it more exactly and you dont "correct" it

out of service means not we dont have them anymore...
2136 SPz Marder (infantry carrier tanks)

you say the others arent stocked but destroyed? uhhm... didnt knew that
154 MLRS / MARS (rocket artillery vehicles)
here the armoured vehicles with wheels:

Only they'll probably need some kind of extra armour if deployed in a risky enviroment like Iraq.

oh well its techincally a tank by definition ;) but thanks for pointing that outActually, M109 is a howitzer & not a tank. Stand-by for my AFV for Dummies thread. It will not teach you to recognize make/model, but you will know tank vs something else.
Oh I know how to tell the difference Im not completly stupid ;) btu a tank by definition is an enclosed armored military vehicle; has a cannon and moves on caterpillar treads, and the M109 in the pic has catterpiller treads on it
Sorry if Im pissing you off. :)
From what i understand, the 'main' difference between a modern self-propelled artillery gun, and a tank, is that one can shoot while moving, and one cannot.

From what i understand, the 'main' difference between a modern self-propelled artillery gun, and a tank, is that one can shoot while moving, and one cannot.
]whats a tank?
In the old days a tank was anything having tracks, armor, and a gun. That was WW-1, as they already had Armored Cars before that. The track was essential in crossing the trenches. WW-2 at the start a tank was a turreted Armored track vehicle. But as the war progressed many things had tracks, and many things had turrets that where not tanks.
Now throughout this time the idea, and concept of a tank had not changed. A tank in WW-1 is still a tank today, but we have added more tools, and so the definition of what a tank is has to be refreshed, and expounded.
The clearest definition of what a tank is that I have seen.
Tank: A tracked armored platform, designed for direct engagement of opposing forces with its large caliber main gun system, having a relative chance of survival in a hostile environment because of its armor. Most often turreted.
CNN is wrong. A D-9 cat is not a tank. Nor is anything that looks tuff (well I may be a tank, because I am just that tuff. But few would say that to me).
A tank is only one type of AFV.
AFVs come in many forms.
We have two basic forms.
Wheeled
Tracked.
From those we have others
APC
MICV
AICV
AARV
ARTY
ADA
etc
But they all have one thing. ARMOR, and a combat job (ok two things).

Spain should upgrade their M-60's like Israel did... :)
It's M-60ATTS, but i'm agree with you, and we should upgrade our M-113 like Israel. But we have just 0'9% from our PIB for defence :(
Or upgrade with M1 turrets like Turkey did
GDLS 120S (M60-2000)
http://www.mainbattletanks.czweb.org/Tanky/m602000.jpg
General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) developed the new version of the M60, the M60-2000, for export. The M60-2000 MBT has been marketed for several years and a number of countries in NATO and the Middle East were briefed on the vehicle. Following customer feedback, detailed engineering work was carried out and in December 2000 GDLS decided to build a functional prototype.
The General Dynamics 120S is an upgrade of the M60 tank. The 120 in the designation represents the 120mm smoothbore gun and the S stands for speed and survivability. The earlier M60-2000 designation is no longer considered relevant as so much of the MBT is new.
The 120S is a unique product that integrates the M1A1 120-mm turret, equipped with a 240X4 Forward Looking Infrared Radar (FLIR), onto a fully modernized M60 chassis. The turret is protected with the latest armor, which was successfully demonstrated to the Turkish Main Battle Tank Committee. The 120S chassis includes an M1A1 suspension system, giving the tank greatly improved cross-country mobility and a stable base for fire-on-the-move accuracy similar to the Abrams tank. The new 120S is fully functional, ready to accept a powerpack of the customer’s choice. To achieve mobility similar to an M1A2 Abrams tank, a 1200-horsepower AVDS-1790-9A engine is available. The upgraded AVDS-1790-9A 1200HP diesel is similar to that used on the M88A2 and Merkava vehicles. The engine is mated to M1 Allison X-1100-5 transmission and Abrams final drives. However, other propulsion options are also possible.
The 120S makes existing M60 fleets relevant by increasing their capability to close to that of the M1A1 Abrams tank’s performance at half the price. Also of significance is the fact that the 120S upgrade components are in production with logistical and operational support readily available through the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps. The 120S offers a pragmatic approach to potential customers.
The first potential customer was Turkey. General Dynamics Land Systems has offered to build a prototype of its proposed M60-2000 upgrade of the M60A3 main battle tank to be evaluated by Egypt.
On 27 September 2001, General Dynamics introduced its 120S Main Battle Tank during the opening ceremonies at IDEF 2001 in Ankara, Turkey. General Dynamics Land Systems rolled out a fully functional prototype of its 120S main battle tank (MBT) at its Detroit facility in early August 2001.
General Dynamics engineering shop produced a first phase prototype vehicle. It had a M1A1 functional turret and suspension system with the M1 gear box, hydraulic pump and M1A1 slip ring. The hull has adapters fitted so the M1A1 rotary shock absorbers, torsions bars and T-158 track can be used. Hull sides had M1A1-like sponsons and ballistic side skirts.

Or upgrade with M1 turrets like Turkey did
GDLS 120S (M60-2000)
Very nice. thank you.
Upgrade of the M-113 is kind of an issue.
It is all based on what you think you need, and does any options fit that, and at what price. Yes the M-113 has been the most heavy modified AFV in the world, and is available in its basic form, and with more modifications then anything in the world. But it is still a box. A box that had an underpowered engine by today’s standards, and because of the layout is limited to what you can do with it. It is still very good for support in the battle zone, it was never meant to be at the battle front.
I liked Canadas M-113R

HEADLINE: In Bosnia, U.N. Troops Finally Go to War;
Over the last two months, Serb gunfire has destroyed four of the battalion‘s armored personnel
carriers.
