For brief notes on the grenade see this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawkins_mine

I knwo people have been killed by guns made for the military, but does anyone have any examples of people killed by anything like what was used above?

Here's some examples of military and military style weapons being used for assassinations and assassination attempts:

Hand Grenades

In 2006, a Georgian threw a live hand grenade at former President George W. Bush landing 65 feet away. The grenade failed to detonate.

Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina had been speaking at a rally protesting blasts against the party’s workers in Sylhet. The rally drew a crowd of 15,000 people.[1] As Hasina finished her speech, a total of 13 grenades were thrown into the crowd from the rooftops of nearby buildings,[2] killing at least 23 people and injuring more than 200. Among the dead were Hasina’s bodyguard and Awami League Women's Affairs Secretary Ivy Rahman.

Complex Attacks

September 16, 2004, an attempted assassination on Hamid Karzai took place when a rocket missed the helicopter he was flying in while en route to Gardez.

June 10, 2007, the Taliban attempted to assassinate Karzai in Ghazni where Karzai was giving a speech to elders. The Taliban fired approximately 12 rockets, some of which landed 220 yards (200 m) away from the crowd. Karzai was not hurt in the incident and was transported away from the location after finishing his speech.

April 27, 2008: Insurgents, reportedly from the Haqqani network, used automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades to attack a military parade that Karzai was attending in Kabul. Karzai was safe, but at least three people were killed, including a parliamentarian, ten-year-old girl and a minority leader, and ten injured
