Very nice. Though, I can't help but wonder what the future of small arms development will be. That is, gun manufacturers are optimizing their designs for the 5.56mm, a round that has been with us since the 1950's and 60's. I felt that the German 4.6mm caseless round would have steered the development of new small arms. It just seems like more of the same, just refined. My 2 cents.

I think necessity is somewhat stifling innovation. What with practically every western nation using 5.56, every third-world using 7.62x39 and a few 5.45s and NATO 7.62s still in circulation, gunmakers are going to keep developing new systems for those calibers. It would take a big shift for any nation now to move away from the calibers they've been using for 30-40 years or more.

Exactly right. We've reached a plateau in rifle-calibre military weapons development, not in terms of what's ideal, but of what's "good enough" on a cost/benefit basis, in terms of accurate effective range, weight of round etc. 6.8 (or whatever) might be an incremental improvement, but as yet no-one has gone with it.

I think you'll have to wait for the next revolutionary step in small arms development (another go at caseless, or some sci-fi shyte) before we stop seeing these tiny steps forward (or even sideways - are polymer receivers that much of an improvement for a military rifle?)

The reversable action is a nice touch I suppose.

I think that the really interesting things of Beretta ARX-160 is the very low maintenance it needs ( lubrification...., sand stoppage), the advantage to be opened in only 3 components and the possibility of a real time change of barrel WITHOUT tools......only using a 5,56 cartridge, and the easy reversable action...............and obviously the lightweight.
It can be fitted for cartridges from 5,56 to 6,8mm

A 7,62mm version is under development

At least for the Italian army is a step forward from the Beretta AR-70/90 in use......

The other great thing is the granade launcher, less than 1 Kg ( about 2 pounds...)

Cool design though it looks alot like the SCAR, Masada and Colt ACR.

Looks a little bulky for my tastes.

Italy has a 5.56 rifle already. Would they be interested in buying this new rifle? Seems like alot of expense without, IMO, any big advantages. Yes, being able to ***** a rifle down in few components and barrel changes are cool, but maybe not really important. I used the M16a1 and the a2 and saw no huge differences, other than a tweak in the bullet rifling for the heavy 62gr round. Would Italy be better served trailblazing a new bullet for general issue?

The ARX-160 is a co-production between Beretta and Italian Army and is part of the future soldier program .
They already sold it to the Albanian army sf ,Venezuela and Egypt .
Thanks to the earning drawn by the sales the Italian army counts to amortize the costs .

That was pretty good grouping for relativly fast semi-auto fire.
