Richard Goldstone - chief prosecutor at the war crimes tribunals for Yugoslavia and Rwanda from 1994-1996 and currently head of a UN fact-finding team on international law violations - made his remarks during a Radio Netherlands Worldwide debate in The Hague.

"Let me say I don't believe, while there are allegations of torture - and errors made in bombing of Kosovo during the Clinton administration - or some civilians being killed in Iraq or Afghanistan, I don't believe that any allegation that I have read or heard against the United States leaders comes anywhere near the sorts of crimes that the ICC has been set up to investigate. Genocide, crimes against humanity, serious war crimes - it just doesn't measure up, that's point one. I don't think it's a fair comparison."

So where does it say that the US committed no war crimes, as you've stated in the title?

that's point one.

So what's point two, etc?

Hmm, maybe this will quiet a few people up?

Why, because you've manipulated the threads title to say something the article doesn't?

Can a mod add to the title " in Iraq" please. Might help clear up any confusion.

Ngati, I can tell you didn't even bother reading the article did you?

In case you missed it.

Since you did miss it.

This was the question.

Asked by a member of the audience if former President George Bush, Vice President **** Cheney, and Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, could ever see themselves on trial at the International Criminal Court for their role in the US-led invasion of Iraq - Judge Goldstone was unequivocal in his answer.

At no point did he state that the "US committed no war crimes" as is the title of the thread.

Ngati, I can tell you didn't even bother reading the article did you?

Sure did. Specifically this quote that you convieniently left out.

"I think it is a blot on the ethics and the morality of the US Congress that there is an act that makes it a criminal offence for government officials to assist the ICC. This was an inheritance from John Bolton's days and I would hope sooner rather than later the now democratic majority in the Senate and the House will repeal those acts. There is talk of it happening and I'm sure it will happen. My attitude on it is very simple, get rid of it."

Interesting how touchy Americans get about free speech...

Good, now maybe we can put this nonsense to rest.

Sure it's nonsense as long as it's connected to the US.

It's funny how some listens too and use UN material only when it suits their needs. When the UN goes against their believes, or oppose whatever agenda they may have, the UN is a commie organization made up of evil Muslims and dictators.

Not really a big fan of the UN nor do I believe they will survive into the next century (probably fall apart before I die). However, the "Bush/Cheney war crimes" fanboys have consistently charged that if taken to the ICC they would be convicted. Considering the source, this should quell alot of them. Of course "should" and "does" are two different things and I'm sure that we will still have armchair sealawyers try to explain that Goldstone and the ICC don't know what they're talking about.

To be honest, I don't know what Ngati is on about. The only "war crimes" that anyone even remotely tries to assign currently to the US with a straight face is the Iraq war. If this is an attempt to link the US to the Israel/Palestine war and claim we're war criminals they are free to try. However, neither Goldstone nor the ICC has made such allegations and Goldstone has a heavy anti-Israel stance.

I think the reverse is funny as well...how the UN poops rainbows and happy music until it finds no war crimes committed by the US...then it's obviously a free speech issue in the states and BS.

We want nothing to do with the ICC anyway. I don't see what the big deal is here.

To be honest, I don't know what Ngati is on about.

Not surprising seeing as you're the one bending the facts.

The fact is that the answer to a question asked about three specific people suddenly got extrapolated to include an entire nation.

Cherry pickin' ...

Yeah, a lot of that going around...
