View Full Version : Japan will lose its second rank in world biggest economies
22 June 2009
The Japanese department (http://www.businesscenter.tv/) of Economy, Trade and Industry (the METI) confirmed today that the Empire of the Rising Sun would soon lose its second rank in world biggest economies (http://www.businesscenter.tv/). China will move from third to second place, the United States remaining on top.
Japan has been the wolrd second biggest economy for 41 years. But the crisis (http://www.businesscenter.tv/) had very strong consequences on the country. During the second quarter of 2009, the national GDP decreased by 14.2% The IMF expects a 6.2% downturn (http://www.businesscenter.tv/) for Japan at the end of 2009, whereas China might have a 6.5% growth.
The METI is aware that the temptation of protectionnism (http://www.businesscenter.tv/) increases as long as the economical situation decreases, and confirmed its intention to avoid such a dangerous solution (http://www.businesscenter.tv/). According to the METI, the solution for Japan is to be a country which can develop solutions for the problems met by the richest countries (http://www.businesscenter.tv/) in the world. Indeed Japan still has a comfortable as far as technology is concerned.
China could become the world second biggest economy (http://www.businesscenter.tv/) in 2010, or even at the end of 2009.

Unmeaningful and who cares...
The Empire of the Rising Sun then will be the 3rd economy...Germany 4th...with such an enormous population is just logical that China will be the 1st economy in the next century, quantity but not quality indeed.
Unmeaningful and who cares...
Chinese seem to do
I've learnt there's very much higher severe NPD(narcissistic personality disorder) ratio out of entire population in China than other nations. They usually call themselves shameless patriots. We got a best example here!

what are you whining about GBob? The article was pretty clear and objective though that METI already accepted the fact which you guys could not? Get over yourself.

Well, it takes time for them to accept and understand. Be patient, bro

True that about quality, but that seems to be slowly changing. I get the feeling, Chinese shietbox quality is not going to be the case forever. There was a time in the early days when Japanese products were panned as being unimaginative inferior copycats of American ideas. We live in interesting times.

I think the average Japanese is more concerned with their standard of living, rather than rank.

We just live in the era of the internet and in a time where information has never been like today.
Japanese products copycats? And when precisely? generally Western people for several reasons tend to put Eastern Asian people (Chinese, Korean, Japanese) in one category without considering the huge differences between some of these people, foremost Chinese and Japanese wich in general they will never able to understand themselves all for deeply basic differences, but for understand all this you need come to see it with your eyes in this part of the world.

The population of Japan is getting older. No reason to spend other than essentials or engage in risk taking.
Don't worry, both US and China are not too far behind in the aging process.

Japan holds its second rank in world biggest economies?
Wow, I thought it's just a littble bit ahead of South Korea...

No doubt there are huge differences between the various asian cultures. The Japanese probably stereotype the Chinese as much as the Chinese or Koreans enjoy stereotyping and discriminating against the Japanese. I'm not going to pretend I even understand it but personally I've always felt Chinese nationalism and the Japanese right wing groups are fundamentally the same bad propaganda. My original point is, whatever we may think about the Chinese now, as makers of cheap, sub-standard exports may not be the case forever. They lack innovation now, but that is usually the case in pre-industrialized nations. There was a time during the 60s and 70s when Japanese cars were alleged to suffer from inferior build quality. The same for Korean cars during the early 90s. Clearly now, the Japanese have the best built cars in the world, I drive a Toyota myself (damn reliable car), and Hyundai has really come a long way as well. I think our mistake would be to underestimate the capabilities of the Chinese because of age old animosities.

You need to think deeeper about the dialectical relations about quantity and quality!

yes, in terms of product quality,
1."Made in Japan" has improved since 1985
2."Made in Korea" has improved since 2005
3."Made in China" ... now 1 and 2 are made in China...
Asian manufacturers, no big difference, I hate to see Samsung copy iPhone.

Agree!
I also happen to dislike products of South Korea!rofl

During the 60's and 70's the Japanese automobile industry mostly built Kei cars, tiny vehicles with little engines as the average Japanese couldn't afford more advanced cars, sources for confirm the inferior quality of Japanese cars during that time?
While Japan was already a world power during the early 20th century you cannot compare it's industry to the Europeans or American ones at that time, yet during the 1910's and 1920's Japan was already a world leader in naval industry, in 1905 the Japanese were the first to use wireless telegraphy in combat against the Russian naval fleets, between 1906 and 1910 Tokyo already launched the largest battleships of the world, the Satsuma and Kawachi Class, between the great world wars, in the 1920's Japan was the first country to operate an aircraft carrier, the Hosho Class, the Fubuki Class destroyer, capable of shoot down incoming aircraft with dual 13 mm machine guns and inclosed torpedo tubes it is considered the world's first modern destroyer, soon later the Fubuki Class destroyers influenced Western designs, during the late 20's Japan developed the best torpedo in the world such the oxigen fuelled Type 93 torpedo wich was considered the most efficient until 1945...and go on...

You should do some research on Japanophobia, specifically in the 70s 80s an early nineties, you realise it wasn't always this way.
I can remember the term "Jap-crap" being used to describe all things nipponese

In Australia specifically there was huge opposition to Japanese mining companies purchasing stakes in Australian ore deposits an property investors buying Australian real estate

that's just the truth.
if you d0 a little research, you will realize that strong currency made Japan's economy look big. Japan has lost 20 years, totally out in the IT boom since 1996. my korean friend said Korean economy is smaller as a result of weak currency...
confused now, mysterious asian countries...

Imagine that. A country of 1.3 Billion has slightly more $ than a country of 80 Mio and maybe in the near future a country of 160 Mio yet less than a country of 307 Mio or a union of roughly 400 Mio.

You obviously know more about Japanese innovation than I do, thank you for correcting me. I'm sure you can quote many other historical examples. I'm also sure many Chinese can cite the many innovations in culture, arts, linguistics, science, religion, etc. during their long dynastic history. It is a futile argument and has no relevance to my original point, which is not to underestimate the Chinese potential because we consider them the sick people of Asia or laugh at their crappy exports and human rights abuses. You seem more interested in debunking any pejorative statements against Japan.
Regarding poor quality Japanese cars, I'm sure you can do a google search for personal testimonies and articles from that time period. I really don't want to turn this into a "Everything Japanese is glorious" or a "China is an imperialist pig dog" thread. Neither am I saying that Chinese hegemony is righteous either. I can't decide which is more hypocritical.

Japan in the early 20th century no way it had an industry of the size and infrastructures nor the experience comparable to western ones such the German, British, American just for name a few, ect ect still in an arch of time of roughly 2 decades (1910's-1920's) they built was a top notch Navy with revolutionary designs and equipments, in the early 20's was the 3rd largest naval fleet in the world after the American and British ones, this mean that a country that it is in a pre-industrialized phase, that does not possess yet a mature industry doesn't mean that it lack in innovation like you said and I'm talking about modern tech and industry. It is in da blood and only few nations have been born to rulez, showed well in the last big century from West to East, respectively, Ze Germans, The Juices and The Japs. :p

It's all about quality control and constantly making improvements.
The irony here is that many Japanese brand products are Made in China.
The Japanese are fanatical about product development and never satisfied with the final design.

Forgive my schoolbook understanding, the Meiji Restoration was a truly remarkable time in Japanese history. Since then, Japan has become a prosperous and powerful nation. That is to Japans credit, but to suggest that certain races are more adept at ruling than others is absurd. All other races are natural born followers? I think this notion of a super race is a fallacy that right wing groups use to promote their nationalist agendas, whether it be in Japan, Russia, England, etc. I hear the same self righteous crap from the Chinese, they too like to quote their past as some kind of god given right of dominion over others. The fortunes of any nation ebb and flow just as surely as the stock markets go through boom and bust cycles. We are all victims of historical circumstance, the Japanese, or even the Chinese are no more remarkable in my opinion. We are all free to believe as we wish, but I don't see how perpetuating such myths does anything more than promote a false sense of racial superiority. I suppose you also believe in pseudosciences such as phrenology...
