IDF to set up "simulator city"
Eight giant machines will, within 18 months, simulate practically every war zone scenario using three dimensions, dynamic targets and all types of weaponry.

An entire “city” of giant simulators that would create realistic war zones is to be built within 18 months, the IDF’s Ground Force Command (GFC) has announced.
By the end of 2005, the systems are scheduled to go online. The Technological Center at the Julis Army Base will consist of seven very large simulators that will serve the IDF’s fighting units.
The simulators will be on the cutting edge of simulator technology. For example, one of the machines will simulate, in a three-dimensional view, an entire structure, enabling, for instance, commanders of a unit that is slated to carry out an operation in a known structure, to feed the computer with data on the building’s dimensions using the utmost detail.
The simulators will significantly improve the soldiers’ capabilities, GFC officers say. They simulate real ground, allow troops to practice all types of weaponry whether advanced or simple, and shoot at a dynamic enemy, unlike in a static firing range. In addition, the soldiers will be filmed during their entire practice period so their performance could be evaluated.
According to head of the training department at the GFC, Colonel Ofer Segal, “A large variety of simulators are planned. It will also save a great deal of money. For example, ‘dissecting’ an engine of a tank for the purpose of training costs half a million shekels. That can be avoided. Also, a mortar shell type ‘Gil’ simulator allows the soldier to create a firing program, provides him with an aerial shot of his target and helps him improve his professionalism. In real life, each ‘Gil’ shell costs NIS 3,000”.
However, Segal concludes, “There is nothing like actual fighting experience, but we are nearing reality”.
