Wow, but what's the point of digging them out? Is the equipment inside still of any value?

It makes me wonder as well on why were they placed under ground like that.

Maybe they were placed there at the start of "Iraqi freedom", Saddam probably feared that the USAF would nuke his precious planes or something.

Still, even if the Iraqis would've burried the planes it wasn't damn likely that they would've had the chance to use them anymore.

This is one weird case, almost seems like if someone would've placed them there just keep them hidden for the rest of his days. Or, then Saddam really thought that hiding the aircraft in order to make them available at a later date was a good idea...

Agree, maybe they find the nuclear/bio/chemical stuff that the U.N observators were looking for also.

Another reason for hiding planes like that is to keep them safe from bombs and laser guided missiles. But if they are good enough to use after the visit at "plane cemetery"...........i dont think so.

Maybe Saddam is just another enviroment polutor(sorry if misspelling).

Same reasons some of the jets took refuge in Iran - the chances of recovering it are slim but still higher than when it's a pile of smoking scrap metal... What's really ironic to me - Saddam ordered to bury his airforce in the sand, then himself hid underground...

That's why dictators are so stupid - nobody left alive to tell you just how ridiculous your childish acts are...

They were burried to protect them from being bombed- but they are useless from all the sand in em anyways. And alot of them were looted- pieces sold as scrap metal.

They were wrapped in plastic - look at the sheets stripped away as they dig them up... Archeologists of the future would have a field day with this burial ritual - I wonder what explanation they'd come up with?

I hate to tease you guys, but the real reason is classified.

The Iraqi airforce was decimated after the first gulf war, they are no match for the american airpower..instead of sacrificing planes it was more stratigic to bury them.

I think i've read/watched something which said an Iraqi airforce commander ordered all the jets to be buried after he was brided and sided with the Coalition. :| Anyone head of this also?

I hate to tease you guys, but the real reason is classified.

I hate to break it to you, but there is no real reason - known or classified... More like acts of desperation and pure madness - but nice try, anyways...

Sorry, forgot that you know everything...I could have an "I told you so" moment but it's not worth my career.

Oookay then

Awesome - well, I'll see it on History channel in ten years then... And then someone find the real truth another ten years after - and so on and so on and so on...

Real reason being, that Uday and Usay can chase all those virgins in supposed heaven in big sniny Foxbats...

But then again - there are way too many obvious reasons to go along with logical explanations - this is not exactly JFK assassination or suggested evidence of the Extra-Terrestrial forces at work... Smells of desperation... I must be at least warm :)

If it's not worth risking your "career" over - it's not worth a tease... But these mysteries are the only reason why I still sleep with foil cap on...

Well, you're thinking more out of the box now...thats good. You're right about the tease, I thought that I shouldn't have posted that after it was too late. I know that I could edit it, but its already been read. Anyway, no big deal...I just didn't want to come off as bragging, but teasing wasn't cool either. I'm sure that the answer will come to light sooner or later...maybe even someone on the forum will hit the nail on the head.

as for the reason. Honetly, I have no clue. But I'll believe Boracho, cause his occupation is this kind of stuff.

I think this is all way to complicated for any of us to understand, el Boracho. Ive found one thing, feel free to laugh at me:

"Some sources claim that the MiG-25RB could also carry a single nuclear munition instead of a conventional bomb load" Odd thing is, the last major order put in place by Iraq to the USSR was in '79.

perhaps they finally found those wmd's....

You wouldn't believe it, but in a local paper "Evening Herald" (not mentioning where exactly) there was an article with few photos about planes being uncovered from under the sand, claiming that finally the WMD are found, the reason being, that these planes are capable of delivering WMD.... not joking, really!

I guess that guy's logic is on par with boiled potatos, since pretty much anything can be classified as that.
