Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers try out their latest mud skis, to help them move about defending the muddy coastal stretch in Taizhou, eastern China's Zhejiang province. China's President Hu Jintao has recently called for military modernization in a move suggesting he now has the confidence to challenge his predecessor Jiang Zemin for control of China's 2.5 million strong armed forces.

This so called "mud skis" has been used by local farmers for hundreds of years. They use it at costal muddy land for framing or catching the shells.

And the guys in the pictures are not PLA. They are the military police. And they are helping local farmers' agriculture. It's their tradition.

As I mentioned, it is a tradition. The PLA and military police pay a lot attention on their relation with local civilian. Their solgan is "People are water and we are fish. Fish can't live w/o water". So they have to do something to help the local civilian as volunteer every year. A typicall practice is to help farmers' agriculturing during the busy farming time.

China is modelled after the Soviet Union and the communist nations, so the fact that the Police is very militarized should not strike anyone odd.

It was rampant throughout the Eastern Bloc and the Soviet Union. The Police was a militarized organization, to strike anyone this as something odd is mind boggling but then again not everyone lived in the eastern bloc.

Calm down! This famous picture was taken a couple years ago in the big flood at Yangzi river. That two amried polices were trying to rescue a baby surrounded by flood.
