Israel considers Merkava-based heavy APC
The Israeli Ministry of Defence (MoD) is considering the development of a new heavy armoured personnel carrier (APC) dubbed Nemerah (Tigress), based on the chassis of the Merkava main battle tank (MBT).

Doesn't the Merkava 4 already carry a section of troops (6 men isn't it?) in addition to the crew?

I thought I read 8 troopers could be transported within the Merkava 4...plus crew.
Anyway if Martin van Creveld is right, the time of the classical MBT, that is designed to kill other MBTs, is all but over. Perhaps, the Merkava with his features that reduce his effectiveness in that role, like shorter barrel and door at the back to enable him to function as a kind of APC is showing the way. The next logical step could very well be a vehicle that emphazises the APC role even more. And that could be the principal heavy armored land weapon system of the 21st century.
Just some thoughts...
To play with the tanks cost much much more then play houe of an IFV>>
