Having spent a few months trying to identify Russian load-bearing equipment and ballistic vests from photos taken during the Chechen Wars, I still have a few bits of equipment that I'm having trouble identifying. I'm hopeful that some of the Russian experts here may be able to help and correct anything I've got wrong.

(1) Interior Ministry Soldier - Chechnya 2000 (2 photos)

Is the webbing SPOSN Lazutchik, ex-Soviet "Lifchik" or some variant of this? I'd only ever seen "Lifchik" with 3 pouches for the the AK magazines. Below this picture is a similar sort of webbing from 1999. Is that SPOSN Lazutchik M?

(2) Interior Ministry Soldiers - Daghestan 1996 (2 photos)

The soldier on the left. Is he wearing a V-95 assault vest? I thought so originally, but haven't seen a version with double pockets below the magazine pouches. I have included another picture from Daghestan 1999 that seems to show a similar assault vest.

(3) Interior Ministry/Army - Daghestan 1999 (3 photos)

I am completely stuck with the configuration of these assault vests/ballistic vests. It looks like a ballistic vest is worn by the Russian soldiers, underneath some kind of assault vest. Any help with this would be much appreciated, particularly with identification of the type of assault vest worn.

(4) Interior Ministry Soldiers - Grozny 1999

The soldier on the right. Is that a Kazak Ballistic Vest? The soldier on the left. What type of assault vest is that?

(5) Unknown Unit - Grozny 1996

What are the two pouches carried by this soldier for? Some sort of ammunition? Maybe for a PKM box magazine? Does anyone have any pictures of this kit on it's own?

(6) Unknown Units - Chechnya 1999/2000 (2 photos)

Type of ballistic vests are these? Kazak variants? The second soldier looks like he is wearing a Russian army issue vest from the straps, but I've not seen the wrap-around before, over the AK magazine pouches.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Its a DIY-made chestrig, using two issued AK pouches (it goes with every AK)

So called "BVD - boevaya vikladka desanta" (assault airborne loadout)

Both are not SPOSN. Firstone looks like (I dont remember the name) the issued late-soviet chestrig, but here it is made of camuflage fabric (probably synthetic, original vest was canvas made)
Second chestrig - cant recognize it, it similar to Splav's chestrigs but the pouches flaps are too short (in Splav chestrig flaps are long and almost touch the bottom of a pouch)

The guy on the left in 4 looks like he's modified a summer VSR uniform into an assault vest.

The second picture of 6 is a modified 6B5 body armour.

I don't suppose anyone has any better pictures of this equipment?

Thanks so far for the replies. Still no identification for number 2 though and some of the ballistic vests. The Kazak types are difficult to find pictures of, even on the internet.

The trouble is there are very few books on this complex subject in English or even available in Europe, so I'm relying on this forum for help!

It's for a scaled model project that I'm in the process of commissioning. I pretty much have all the books available on uniforms, but the load-bearing equipment that Russian forces wore in Chechnya is very confusing, particularly if you are a non-Russian. The lack of standardisation, whilst making for interesting research, does make the task of identification very difficult. I do wish there was a book on this subject - there certainly is a gap in the market!

Picture with translation of Instruction sheet for BVD vest

http://camo.panzerwerk.com/images/stories/vestpaper.JPG

Translation of Instruction (Thanks Markov !)

Note on the use of equipment BVD:

1. Store items (luggage) in pockets of equipment.
2. Adjusting shoulder regulator in the right manner. Put cloth over main uniform and adjust string of the left shoulder.
3. Close side straps of the product. Properly adjusted straps must not restrict movement, should wrap around the body firmly.
4. Undoing the straps results in the opposite dimension (effect/direction?).
5. Cleaning and washing the product is to be done according to the norms for cotton fabric.
6. Per necessity the tent square (plash-palatka) has to lock tight in the fasteners.
