Venezuela steps up control of television, radio
Thu Jul 9, 2009 2:39pm EDT
CARACAS (*******) - Venezuela is taking dozens of radio stations off the air and putting stricter rules on cable and satellite television, a minister said on Thursday, part of President Hugo Chavez's battle with private media firms.
Disodado Cabello, the public works minister who also oversees Venezuela's broadcasting watchdog, said 154 FM radio stations will be taken off the air and shifted into public hands in what he called "democratizing the airwaves."
He recently said 86 AM radio stations will also be hit as the government steps up efforts to turn Venezuela into a socialist society.
"The use of the radio-electric spectrum is one of the few areas where the revolution has not been felt," Cabello said in a presentation to legislators about the need for reform in the sector.
Since taking office a decade ago, Chavez has broken up large farms and nationalized important economic sectors including the oil industry.Article continued at http://www.*******.com/article/worldNews/idUSTRE5686HU20090709
Well, sounds like Chavez is planning to stick around for some while
Democratizing the airwaves indeed. Hugo Chavez, leader of failed coups but bringer of democracy.

They are still working on the law, it includes something for counter spionage and also the recording and listening too of all the calls that are made and something to do with the internet. Every time I call my parents I joke around and say "Hello DISIP there is nothing important to be heard here."

That part actually made me laugh, no one can say anything about the government and if they do they will might close the station or tv station, also if one channel gets to lets say 'announce the death of someone' and it hasn't been verified the government can choose to fine the tv station or radio. What most people do is that they say something terrible about the government and then say that they are only kidding or also being extremely sarcastic.

A majority of the population voted for him. Now the chickens have come home to roost. As I tell my Venezuelan wife when she speaks sadly of how things are going in her former country: F....them!

For some reason I thought your wife was either Mexican or some other Latin American country or you were from Latin America, because most of your post have something against Venezuela.

I know a guy who thinks Chavez is the best thing on two legs who can do no wrong and sh*ts golden eggs. If he loves Chavez so much, I told him he should move to Venezuela. Simple as that.

Hahaha that kind of **** always makes me laugh, is like when I see them down here in Fl wearing those shirts that say "now Venezuela is of everybody" and even more retarded that the shirts are red. My friends and me most of the time make fun of them because of that. People that thing that Chavez are the best **** ever are either ignorants or haven't read anything about Venezuelan politics of the 20th century. The only guy that ever did good to the country in the last 100 years was the guy on my avatar, other than that they are all sellouts who only wanted to make themselves rich.

Yeah of course he enjoys all the luxuries of living in the US being able to say or do what he wants and thinks the US should unilaterally disarm itself completely rofl He's happy to accept other people's freedom being diminished while his remains intact.

I hope he is not Venezuelan and if he is, he is the kind of Venezuelan that I feel sorry of. I always wonder what would my grand father, ex-major of the Venezuelan army, think about all the **** that Venezuela has gone through during the last 10 years. Pretty sure he wouldn't be pleased.

1. I'm Puerto Rican (a real one from the island, not one of those wannabees from NY)
2. I have a HUGE problem when any south of the border nations get all uppity and forget their manners.
3. ^^^ Ditto for glorifying military forces that are solely used for oppression (re: current Venezuelan Army).

Leftist totalitarianism is making a comeback, sadly.
It is delightfully retro, though.
