Anyone have experience in sewing a patch onto a goretex or hardshell jacket?
I am slightly worried about water being able to creep through where i will sew my patch on.
Any advice?

I would encourage you to refrain from sewing patches onto your jacket. Get a field jacket or something like that, then it won't matter.

Never known anyone to sew onto goretex.
Get hold of some 'Wonder Web' and iron your patches on instead.

You could try a product similar to these http://www.aquaseal.com/, I used them to repair small holes in diving drysuits many times. So if you're adamant you want to sew onto your goretex put some of this stuff over the stitches on the inside. Go to/ring a Scuba diving shop and ask for whatever they'd used for small leaks in a drysuit.
The stuff I used to used came in a tube like toothpaste and dried like rubber doesn't last forever if there is alot of bending of the area its applied to, but quite a long time and can be re-applied.

What kind of jacket, what kind of patches? Military, airsoft, other identification, or just a personal design?

Wouldn't sewing a bunch of small holes into the Goretex jacket punch holes right through the membrane and ruin it?

What I would do is sew the patch on and then use Silent Silicone Seam Sealer specially formulated for sealing seams on tents and other outdoor products constructed or coated with silicone, such as silicone treated nylon. Silent may also be used as an in-field repair material for moderate rips, tears and areas of abrasion.

You could also ask/search here; http://www.diytactical.com/forums/ or here; www.lightfighter.net (http://www.lightfighter.net) but I think the best advice has already been given. Unless you know how to seal up/waterproof the edges around the thread don't do it. Seam sealer may work but be careful what kind you use as this stuff can be messy. What Egale The Lightning suggested I would not use. This stuff is very messy as I used it recently to seal up a stitch on a poncho.

Thanks guys. I think I will explore other options that doesn't involve sewing.

Other form of identification.

Don't sew on Gore-Tex, use barge cement.
Seam seal, is a very poor alternative to tape sealing. Better than nothing.

There are gore tex repair kits out there. They usually consist of a piece of fabric with adhesive strips on it. It works well for a short while but not longer periods. Send it in for repair.
