View Full Version : Kim Jong Il 'has pancreatic cancer'

North Korea’s supreme leader, Kim Jong Il, is suffering from cancer of the pancreas and is in danger of dying of the disease, South Korean television reported this morning, the latest and most specific in a series of reports on the dictator’s health.
The information, which was attributed by Yonhap Television News to unidentified Chinese and South Korean intelligence sources, is consistent with a report in a Japanese newspaper over the weekend that Mr Kim has a “serious pancreatic disorder”, and with television images from North Korea last week, in which he appeared haggard, emaciated and slow on his feet.
Mr Kim disappeared from public view for three months last year after what intelligence agencies assume was a stroke last August. Since then, judging from television footage of him, his health has declined.
The South Korean intelligence agency has reported signs that Mr Kim is paving the way for his youngest son, Kim Jong Un to succeed him; unconfirmed reports have even had the 25-year-old visiting Beijing to get to know officials of the closest thing North Korea has to an ally – China.
All year, Pyongyang has staged a series of verbal and physical provocations, including the launch of an intercontinental rocket and an underground nuclear test, which suggest that it has abandoned expectations of negotiation with the international community in favour of whipping up nationalist fervour at home.
There are no obvious signs that Kim Jong Il is in anything less than complete control, but close examination of recent internal developments leads many Pyongyang-watchers to the conclusion that he is leaning towards military hardliners, and away from the more reform-oriented advisers whom he favoured in the middle of the present decade.

If it's pancreatic cancer that's pretty much guaranteed. I guess they will probably dope him up to the eyeballs with opiate analgesics though. Either way he's finished. I wonder how the 'family business' will cope without him

One notable defector (who's name escapes me) believes the stage is being set for revolution, and that there's a good chance it'll be the end of the line for the Kim dynasty if Kim Jong Un fails to cement his position adequately.
Reasons listed are true believers within the regime who disagree with the current nepotist, feudal-style society, and are hoping to steer the country towards a truer form of socialism.
Likewise, the middle-aged segment of the Party and the military are growing more powerful as Kim's own inner circle continues to age and lose relevance(most members of the inner circle are well into their 70s).
The continuous threats have only served to tighten the noose, even as they manage to extort a modicum of aid from the US, South Korea, et. al. in that it's become less-and-less profitable for key leaders to side with Kim Jong Il, due to restrictions money and luxury goods.
Personally, I think Kim Jong Un will be making significant overtures towards the ROK and US if he takes the reigns, otherwise he has few places to turn to.

That's very interesting. I'd be very surprised if Jong Un can maintain the same grip on power as his grandpa and dad had, particularly amid the absence of the Orwellian personality cults that had been built around the elder Kims. In the end, I think Jong Un will only be a figurehead with the real power held by those behind the scenes. If his father's cronies win the power struggle after Jong Il kicks the bucket, then we probably can't expect much change in the near term. However, if a progressive faction (if such groups even exist) emerges, then perhaps there is a glimmer of hope for that country.

Yeah, I wish I could remember his name (he comments fairly regularly), but he does have a reputation for being somewhat of a leftist, so I suppose his optimisim in that regard should be taken with a grain of salt.
The members of MP.net really should send a collective card, I believe something along the lines;
'YOU DIE! YOU DIE, AND YOU GO TO HELL MOTHER****ER! I HOPE ADOLPH, STALIN AND MUSSOLINI IS WAITING DOWN THERE TO FORNICATE YOU EYE SOCKETS WITH BURNING CYBORG MONSTERCOCKS YOU ****ING ANIMAL' is something we all can agree on.

it could be a front for a more debilitating disease/ailment/
From wikipedia:
"Pancreatic cancer is a malignant neoplasm of the pancreas. Each year in the United States, about 42,470 individuals are diagnosed with this condition and 35,240 die from the disease.[1] The prognosis is generally poor; less than 5 percent of those diagnosed are still alive five years after diagnosis. Complete remission is still extremely rare"
There are few more debilitating or deadly cancers.
This is awesome, I can't believe that I'm seeing this guy dead during my lifetime.
You're twenty kid, you'll see a lot of people die during your lifetime.
There's no need to clap and cheer Kim's death. Yeah he's a bastard but without real change, North Korea will be no better off. If they just go and install his son or a cabal of generals it really makes no difference.
As for whether he 'deserves' it on a moral level consider this: He's an elderly man - nearing seventy - who's led a pretty hedonistic lifestyle. Pancreatic cancer tends to effect people of a similar age and habits and it has a low survival rate. For what he's done to his body over the years he may 'deserve' it, but then no more so than Patrick Swayze.
To quote the movie Gladiator, "Death smiles at us all. All a man can do is smile back."

A pleasant fantasy but the way I see it he gets off lightly. As ugly a way to die as cancer is, Kim is an old man and we all gotta die of something. He will not live to atone for his crimes against his people. It is every dictator and despot's dream to die an old man on his sickbed with his regime intact around him.
Without real change after his death, the perceived 'justice' of it is meaningless.
