View Full Version : AR-15 hammer issues

Hi all, I'm back with another firearms question. I recently purchased an AR-15 lower from R Guns and installing the lower parts kit has been interesting to say the least and I was wondering if it's me, the receiver, or the parts kit that might be messed up. I've had two major issues actually- the first was when I tried to install the selector switch, there wasn't enough clearance above the trigger for the switch to go through. I solved that problem by filing off just a bit of the finish on one part of the switch and it went through with a little effort. The next problem is the biggie. After installing the hammer and cocking it, the hammer moves a millimeter or two with a "click" and it takes a screwdriver to pry the hammer up to free it. It looks to me like it's catching on the front of the trigger too much to let go when the trigger is pulled. To add to the mystery, when I push the pin out with a punch only slightly smaller than the pin and leave the punch in to hold the hammer in the lower the hammer works like a charm and releases every time. It seems to me that the hammer pin hole is just a bit too low. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? As always, thanks for the help.

It is very difficult and unwise to make recommendations without seeing the FCG first hand. Aftermarket FCG parts are often garbage. That being said make very sure: A. Your parts are in the correct placement. B. They are GOOD quality. (I have seen poor quality parts and mixes of AR15 and M16 parts double cycle.) C. Make sure the hammer trigger holes are drilled in the correct spots. A first hand comparison with a known good rifle is the most helpful. Many of the AR web sites have sticky pictorial diagrams on the assembly of the FCG.
( AR15.com) An easy fix would be to buy a one piece match FCG, they run from $75-200.

The problem is the trigger and the disconnecter and the trigger are not aligned properly. What kind of lower is it?
Usually a discounted lower parts kits has a lot of off spec parts, what a lot of 2nd tier company do is to buy those rejected mil-spec parts and put together parts kits for the civilian market. they get some returns, but the profit out weight the trouble.
If your lower is from a reputable manufacture, you can most likely point the problem to your parts kit. get a nice trigger, disconnecter, and hammer from a good source. those should go in in a jiffy. even better if you can find a friend with a working AR lower, pull his parts to fit into your lower just to be sure before purchasing.
If you have a second or third tier receiver, then you just compounded your own problem.

The lower is from "R Guns". I got it from JG Sales. The lower parts kit is from Tony's Custom Uppers. Looking at the selector it looks like the notches were drilled by hand and when it's set to "fire" it doesn't point straight up. That doesn't explain why the trigger is too high to allow the switch to pass through the lower smoothly though. If I take the selector switch out completely the trigger releases the hammer just fine. I'm starting to think the pin holes were drilled wrong.

If you install the trigger and the hammer, then you try to pass the selector over the top of the trigger, some time it creates enough pressure from the hammer that the trigger are pushed up enough that your selector will not go through....so did you slip the selector pass the trigger with or without the hammer installed?
but that being said.. nothing on your parts should look like some one used a file on it.
I am not sure what is a r-Guns lower, they are a distributor...Not sure who they bought their lowers from...and parts from Tony's customer tell me nothing...
Sorry

I tried putting the selector through with only the trigger installed and the trigger was still in the way. The receiver is marked "SPORTSWEREUS/R GUNS CARPENTERSVILLE IL USA". I was just saying I got the parts from Tony's. I think they are pretty reputable and wouldn't sell crap.

Here is your quote:

If your safety looks like some one drilled it by hand, it is not a good part....the selector not point straight up and down has nothing to do with your receiver holes drilled incorrectly, it is your parts kit not in spec. talk to Tony Custom upper to see if they might be able to rectify it be exchange you different parts
