It's not waterproof at all. it is just lightweight. I have used it in south america (jungle warfare) and in Djibouti (desert), and I'm very happy of it. It's perfect for hot weather: a little bit too warm at the beginning, but when your very tired, It avoid you to feel cold.

No idea for a bivy with mosquito net, but if you want a mosquito net, you should prefer a net which is integrated in a hammock (with basha) or a camp bed...I'm sure the mosquitoes I saw in these countries are able to drill a bivy close to your skin...

If you aren't hooching when it's cold, then go fo a Hennesy Hammock. By far the best nights sleeop i have ever had in the field.

It has a basha and mosquito net.

If you want quality and lightness go for anything Terra nova, one of the best makes to go for when camping, the Snugpak hooped bivi bag looks good, It all depends on where you want to use it and when in the year.

I've got two Hennessy Hammocks, an Ultralight Backer A-Sym and a Scout that came free with a promo. They're very nice. No issues with bugs when I'm in them. I totally agree with the remark on the temperature though. I tried staying out in my hammock on a night that dipped below freezing, and let me tell you, it was a b*tch. It was spur of the moment, and I wasn't ready for it. I wound up packing in my pride and going inside. Being prepared for a brisk night is not the same as being prepared for a brisk night while suspended in the air.

Speaking of Snugpaks are their synthetic sleeping bags one the best out there or I could find lighter and warmer?

Sleeping bag liners are compact in size and great for boosting the comfort and warmth of your sleeping bag.

Net hammock and poncho...get them both at "cheaperthandirt.com". A little 550 cord, a few tentstakes, you are in business.

Lived in that combo for years in the field, the money you save on that setup, buy some deet or off, take care of the bugs no problem...and I'm talking Louisiana swamp mosquitos.

Netting gets jacked up really easily, and with holes in it, you'll be using deet anyway...as for cold weather, an emergency reflective blanket in a poncho liner is the ticket for down to 30-40 Fahrenheit.

I'm looking into buying a Snugpack as well. Is it worth it or would you guys suggest looking around for something else? Thanks.

I have had good experiences with the Snugpak Jungle bag......but it isn't water proof. If you need that....you need the Snugpak bivy bag. It works well in warmer/temperate climates. A silk liner extends the comfort down a few degrees lower, plus keeps the bag free of dirt, sweat and body oils. In a very warm/humid climate I use the silk liner and the hammock for maximum comfort.

I have also used the Hennesy Hammocks and can confirm their comfort and usefulness in the field. In cooler temps you need to use a sleeping pad under you for insulation. In a warm/tropical environment, they can't be beat !! Much lighter and dryer than any tent. I use it with the snakeskins for fastest set up and pack up.

in general, snugpak is said to be pretty good. But for the warmest sleeping bags, I personnaly prefer Carinthia, cause they are as warm, but lighter...or as light, but warmer, as u want

As an infantryman in my country, my "sleeping kit" is:

- US poncho as a basha...my issued one is tougher but the US is light and cheap.

- a padded mat, made by trangoworld. Inflatable ones (Is it the right word ??) are better, but not as tough to sleep everywhere.

- a snugpak bivy: not the best bivy, but very light.

- a sleeping bag: for hot conditions, the snugpak jungle bag; for temperate, the carinthia tropen, a must have for me; for very low temperatures, the carinthia defence4. Moreover, the tropen and the defence4 can be worn together for extreme conditions, but you need to live near the north pole to find that usefull ;)

In south america, for jungle warfare training, we used 3 different ways of sleeping:

-the best one: a static rope between 2 trees with a basha (the rope can stop little things falling from the trees during the night...and avoid these things to break your hammock), a hammock with integrated mosquito net, and my snugpak jungle bag...

- the tactical one: just a very light hammock without mosquito net and a poncho...have fun !

- the survival one: built a kind of shack (don't know the word in english sorry) so that you don't sleep on the ground...If you have no choice, sleep on the ground...hum...or just try to ! If you're very tired, that works ! ;)

See you on the beach
