View Full Version : Favorite video/computer game ever?

Doesn't have to be military-related. What's your one favorite game of all time? And say why.

________________

For me, it's got to be Warcraft III (and expansion). This game paid exquisite attention to so many things that modern games lack. Great musical score? Check. Engaging single-player play? Check. Characters and plot to the single-player game that you actually care about? Check. Attention to the multiplayer play--not just making it available, but continually fine-tuning it to preserve game balance and weed out cheaters? Check. For me though, single-player is more important than multi-player, and while most games nowadays skimp on SP (or just plain omit it, like America's Army), WC3 has such a good SP game that you get your money's worth even if you never go online.

Oh yeah, and the cutscenes ROCK.

I'm just speaking personal opinion, but it keeps the mind busy as to where to build, what strategy to use, where to send units etc....

That's my personal favorite.

Sid Meier's *****sburg. Because it is a real RTS-game where everything is already set on the battlefields. You have to play with what you got and the reenforcement that is pre-set.
You can use tactics and strategy on the maps. Ain't no rush possible here a la Red Alert-style.

My favourite games are the Close Combat series, started off being made by microsoft (it wasnt as good then) now I think it's a company called SSI who does them. It's a mix between turn based and real time strategy, where you move the divisions on the map to occupy land, and if you run into or deliberatly attack or get attacked by enemy units, it goes into RTS mode and you go into a batlle where you have different types of units (from infantry to armour) and you can also call in air strikes or artillery (if weather permits). It's set in WW2 and i believe theres five games - the first one is absolute crap, set in the Normandy campaign. The second one (a bit better, you can be brit american or german) is based on Operation Market Garden, the third one in the series is the Russian Front, fourth (my favourite) Battle of the Bulge, and the final one is a redo of the normandy campaign.

Heres the turn-based aspect:

seeing what units you have
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/screenshots/1/196941/cc4_screen004.jpg

and the majority of the game, the RTS fighting part:

Also Call of Duty is the best FPS game I've ever played. An awesome squad based WW2 shooter game. With American, British, and Russian Campaigns - from the american airborne normandy landings, to Pegasus Bridge, british SF type stuff, and a conscript sniper in the russian army fighting at stalingrad (sound familiar?)

My overall favorite is Deus Ex, the first one. I got totally carried away by that game, it's like reading a good book, watching a good movie and playing a good FPS and RPG all at once. I must have played through the game six or seven times, never done it the same way twice. The replayability is second to none.

The best war shooter, I'd say Call of Duty. That is a good shooter!

The game I play the most is still Ghost Recon. I got a sh*tload of mods to keep it fresh, but I can't get enough of that gameplay.

I just got in America's Army SF, about 2 weeks ago. It's really cool. I never play multiplayer in retail games, didn' like CS or BF1942 much, but AA is a blast. I had a killer round in River Basin two days ago, I was jumping on my chair! :)

This isn't my favorite game, but I was pleasantly surprised by Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. It's completely free, download it now and try it out:

http://enemy-territory.4players.de:1041/index.php

Let me repeat, it's absolutely free, you don't need to buy RTCW to play this, you get the same Quake 3-based engine that games like Call of Duty are using for free!

The gameplay consists of accomplishing multiple objectives per map like escorting (and frequently repairing) a tank to break into a base, setting up a forward command post, forcing your way into the enemy HQ, then getting the main objective. Other times the maps are simpler like capture the flag, or the ubiquitous D-Day scenario. What's really cool is that depending on how things are going, the map unlocks various sections dynamically. So if you move forward enough and capture a key area your reinforcements respawn in the new area giving your team an advantage, or a base that might have been the enemy's at one point can now be used by your team for healing and resupply.

There's also character classes: soldier, medic, engineer, field ops, covert ops. You can also play in campaign mode, which is fought like an entire war, going from map to map and having your experience points saved. With more XP you abilities improve and your rank goes up.

Well, there's lots of games that I think are the "absolute best" in my way of thinking. So I'll just put some of them here:

- Steel panthers main battle tank (there's just so much to do in this game , and I'll probably never grow tired of it.)

- Deus ex (The first Deus ex was one of the best games I've ever played, in my opinion. Let's not talk about the sequel..)

- Operation flashpoint - series (The realism and the intense combat are the ones that got me to it in the first place)

- Civilization III (I've played this so much that it deserves a place in my books)

And many more...

Anyway, I never played any of the Fallout games, but I'm pretty sure Interplay isn't just moving on to consoles or anything. Last I heard, they're bankrupt. Obsidian Entertainment looks to be a promising group though. After they finish Knights of the Old Republic II, I believe they're going to be making another PC RPG.

That sounds pretty cool, but to be honest, the Planetside engine didn't really impress me. It's definitely prettier than the Unity engine (WW2OL) but the vehicle physics are appalling. Granted, that could be fixed in a different game. Where did you hear about this anyway?
