Good morning,

I have a Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .308. I absolutely can not stand the 20" barrel that came with it. It's not nearly as accurate as other Remingtons I have fired with a 24" barrel. So my questions are...

Can one switch a barrel on a Remington 700? If so, where is a good place to start looking for barrels? Do barrel changes cost a lot of money?

Thanks for your help/insight.

These guys offer replacement barrels...looks like it'll cost about 300 bucks just for the barrel...They claim that replacing them is relatively easy with a couple of tools.

Brownells has the tools, also has barrels in factory contours by different manufacturers...

As with what CJ says, the other option is to sell or trade it off then obain the one that you want. It might save you money if you go that route.

Check out Sniper Hide, you may be able to swap out your current barrel with someone for the one you want.

Before you sell the rifle, you might want to visit a few of the precision rifle forums and give detailed information about the problems you are experiencing.

This might not be barrel issue. You might simply have cheap rings that are losing center, poor ammo choice, or even a poor trigger (defects happen even to Remington items). 4 inches difference aren't going to make much of a difference at 100yrds or is there a longer range need?

Oh....long rifles will eat a hole in your pocket. :-(

I plan on getting into competitive shooting, so that's why I want a longer barrel. Had I known I wanted to do that from the get-go I would have gotten the standard 24" barrel. Hindsight is a B**CH haha.

20" barrel can get you to 1000 yards. The stock on the sps tactical is not the best. See if you try a different stock from a friend. like others have said many factors to look into.

What is it doing that you don't like? Is it a grouping issue? What load are you using. The factory 700sps barrel is pretty good you should be shooting sub moa with that rifle.

I doubt this has anythng to do with your barrel.. the 700 SPS Tactical I shot last month with a McMillian stock yield a 1/2MOA on the bench.

the Hogue stock on the SPS has no bedding to speak OF AND THE STOCK PLASTIC IS SO SOFT, IF YOU REST THE GUN ON A SANDBAG OR BI-POD, THE STOCK WILL TOUCH THE BARREL AND THROW OFF your shots..

I would suggest finding a PSS stock on e-bay or gun broker, plenty of people change out the HSS precision made stock for some after market deal.. so you might be able to find a PSS stock for cheap...

also good scope mount, scope and ammo are also accuracy factors..

I'm using Federal Gold ammo at 168 grain. I haven't been able to get a grouping less than an inch at 100 yds. I have absolutely no problem doing this with my M4, both personal and issued weapons.

I'll start looking around for the stocks and see if that makes an improvement.

My SPS 20" with a Mac. A5 is a 1/2 MOA rifle ****e bipod no rear bag. The rifle is probably not the problem. Even the factory Hogue stock was under 1 MOA. Make sure of your ammo and sighting system. You will need a 20 MOA base to get out to 1000 yards if you plan on doing that, but the rifle is able.
