Is it possible for the buttstock on an m4 to break when it recoils? I know it locks into place when you pull it backwards. Can the locking be brocken as a result of the recoil? I ask this because of the extenstion-capability of the buttstock and how fragile it seems to the eye.

Given the low recoil impulse of the 5.56 cartridge, and the continued use of the basic retractable stock design from the XM177 onwards, I'd say "not a chance in hell".

not from shooting the recoil is going strait back down a tube.

Shouldn't this be in Equipment & Gear?

So, if the adjustable stock of the M4 looks fragile to you, can I get your official opinion on the wire stock of the Sten SMGs and the M1 Carbines?

Just go without a butt-stock. Only badasses put their shoulder striaght to the buffer tube.

But what if?
If it did break, you'd be w/o a telescoping stock, just the receiver extension.
But it won't break.

Just don't smack anyone in the head with that stock.

The worst I've seen is just cracks under the stock where the lever is. That's on the old-ass CAR-15 stocks, too. That and broken sling-loops. Never seen a stock completely break before, and we've had dudes shoot so much ammo in a short period of time that their barrels turned into S-shaped spaghettis. We also have the Garde en Rouge that slams their rifles on the asphalt at every time of the day and they still don't break enough to be unserviceable.

Only Chuck Norris can break it.
