View Full Version : Where are tactical lights illegal?
Other than in Germany and (on long arms) in Austria? Are they allowed in all 50 US states and in the more restrictive local municipalities such as New York? What about other countries? Thanks!
Cheers

I have never heard of a law restricting the use of flashlights no matter what they are called.

what the hell makes a light or torch "tactical" as opposed to a normal light?
I swear to God people throwing around words like "tactical" and "operator" like it was going out of style
what the hell makes a light or torch "tactical" as opposed to a normal light?
If it can be attached to an airsoft gun for "operating", then it's tactical

in this context "tactical" means, attachable to a RIS (or similar) system.
eg, if you import an torch/light that is exclusively meant to be mounted on a weapon via RIS or similar, you´re breaking the law if you´re not part of the police or armed forces.
even if you´d strap a normal torch to a weapon with binders and get caught would be considered as a crime.
i think even the possession of such "tactical" torches can get you in trouble here in germany.

You can get around the law if you firmly fix a candle to the top of your sight system in place of the torch/flashlight.
I use UV or IR candles for tactical reasons.
Friends of mine have also used kerosene lamps filled with methanol because it burns with no visible flame (only seen through thermal imaging).

yes, Germany is a strange land, and not only for tactical lights... I remember a day when I was in Germany in a weapon store and there was a "build in system" for a glock pistol. You just had to fix the "switch" in the backside of the slide and you could shoot full-auto with the glock... The owner of the shop said that it was legal to sell it (and to "own" it) but build it into your weapon was forbidden by the law :):)
But I think that every country has some kind of "strange" laws... for example... in Belgium it seems (I heared it, but I'm not 100% sure) that 30 round mags for pistols are forbidden, because the magazine may not stick out of your pistols' handgrip ???? 30 round mags are much to "agressive"...
If I remember correctly, some SureFire lights like Hellfighter are under ITAR restrictions to foreign sales. It seems that these days laws are crazy enough to ban flashlights. Thank God NYC doesn't have a ban on "tactical" flashlights (yet).

BTW "tactical flashlights" are not illegal in germany. Just if you put them onto a gun (airsoft or realdeal makes no difference) they are illegal.
And YES if you TAPE them onto your gun they are illegal too...
And its correct that if a flashlight is exclusively built to be mounted on a RIS system - its illegal too...
quite dumb but thats the law...
they are not illegal in austria. thats for sure. you can buy a surefire or walther tac light in any army shop you want
edit: they are not illegal even if you attach them to your real or airsoft gun in austria afaik.

with an appropriate amount of duct tape, any flashlight can be attached to a gun.

I swear to God people throwing around words like "tactical" and "operator" like it was going out of styleI realized it was getting out of hand several years ago when I saw one of the cool gear catalogs (Ranger Joe's or US Cav) advertising "tactical t-shirts".

Never heard that they are illegal in Germany. I know that hunting using lights and NV sights on guns is not allowed but the use in general...?
Who can forebid to mount it on your gun and keep it at home?
Law enforcement units surely uses it and who else has got guns anyway?

The same guys who wont allow you to keep a nuclear bomb at home.
Don´t look for logic - it´s forbidden. Even a light mounted on an airsoftrifle would get you in trouble.
It´s ridiculous but it is the law.
BTW: You can own and keep any type of tactical light you want - you´re just not allowed to mount it on anything that remotely classifies as a gun.

In the UK you can legally Shoot a Welshman with a crossbow within the city of Chester after sunset!
An old ancient by-law that was never changed!

Is it discriminatory? Can one shoot a welshwoman?
The only problem being is that you are likely not allowed to mount a tactical flashlight to your SPC ( special purpose crossbow ) to see the bugger in the dark.

Might be the reasoning behind this anti-taclights law: It´s meant to give them Welshmen in Chester a fair chance.

That's because legislators in California have yet to notice the "crenellated Strike Bezel®" on a Surefire Tactical flashlight.
