View Full Version : Dalai Lama – honorary citizen of Warsaw

The Dalai Lama may not be officially welcome in his own homeland of Tibet, but Poland can’t get enough of the exiled spiritual leader.
The Dalai Lama is making his second visit in eight months to Poland, this time to receive honorary citizenship of Warsaw.
The ceremony will take place at Warsaw's Royal Castle on 29 July. The Dalai Lama will also give a lecture at Warsaw University and open a traditional Tibetan herbal health clinic in the capital.
“The Polish people’s respect for His Holiness the Dalai Lama and sympathy for the just Tibetan cause is overwhelming,” said the Dalai Lama's representative Tsering Tash.
Poland's support for the Dalai Lamai during his European tour last December, caused problems with China, which protested against Warsaw’s staunch support for the Tibetan freedom movement and cancelled a Sino-EU summit.

I am sorry but i have no idea what Polish government is trying to do, pissing Russia off while you're getting most of your natural resources from them doesn't make much sense to me. What about China? Why would you get into that fight between China and Tibet? I don't get it.
I can't say i am familiar with Polish politics but to me it looks like it's another U.S. installed puppet government like it is in Ukraine, Poland is just going to end up getting hurt....

We do not have colour revolution so our gov is not "another U.S. installed puppet government". Its more like some of our politicians believe in America and are eurosceptic. They early life was oppostions against communism so no wonder that thhey still fight against them even when its against national interest... THey do nnot notice that world has changed (like many members of mp.net)...

Simply Wasaw city hall is out of mind. First they named a big street crossing Johhar Dudayev name and now Dalay Lama.
Anyway Poland is a strategic country for China in Europe in terms of investment: telecommunications, development so they will ignore.

Read Polish history and you'll understand why they are giving honors to the Dalai Lama.
Like Tibet, Poland was a vassal state for many competing powers and resisted.
Like Tibet, Poland also had a global religious leader with Pope John Paul II who stood up against Communist oppression.
Like Tibet, Poland also has a Nobel Peace lauriate with Lech Walesa who also stood up against Communist oppression.

Giving honorary citizenship is a traditional form of appretiation of person's actions. What is the problem? China will always find something to brag about.

Good remark what explains exactly:

Dalai Lama could be a Polish national hero as well.

Paradoxally China treats Poland as strategic partner in EU.. so they will never drop the market here.
Why?
Lots of chinese companies treat Poland as growing country with lots of investments and developments.
Developer companies offer bargain prices just to get here.
Telecommunications giant: Huawei is sponsoring telco operators: Play, Centernet, Sferia. They are expecting revenue in following years. Poland is good country to enter European market while well developed Western Europe countries don't have so much do build and to earn.

In fact, Poles- more accurate their ancestors - Slave tribes, invaded middle Europe pushing Germanic tribes into the west... We all are invaders, you'd better to know those facts. rofl
As for Poland' partitions - we still are affected by the fact of unbalanced development in 19th century, when three occupied power differed in their policies toward Polish land.

As if that didn't happen to us chinese. But... we are just too chilled to care about things happening that's beyond our control given that it does not affect out national interests. Something Bismarck called Realpolitik.
Good to hear that Poland isn't suffering as much as other part of eastern europe, otherwise i would really tell people to give a damn about your bank savings and mortgage before concerning about iranians, tibetans whatever.
And that doesn't make me a communist, rather a Bismarkianist who won't put ideals before one's nation's REAL interests, ie those who lived in Prussia which is partly Poland atm.

Bismarck is your idol and pattern to follow? Nice... but you should remember that united Germany and Prussian domination led Germany to WW1
The sad thing is that Bismarck policy eventually failed and 19th century policy will not work in 21st... esp toward ethnic minorities. We Poles head a hard time then by Germany were a country which respected imposed laws what made possible development of many social, cultural and economical development in occupied Greater Poland and Pomerania. Bismarck policy made us more united, stronger and politically efficient because some Poles actively participated in German political life. Even iron chancelor had to obey civil laws... In this sense comparing 19th century Germany and 21st China is pointless. Germany then, was much advanced and developed politically than modern China.
Good luck then!

That same Germany was also far more miltiaristic and aggressive than modern China. Although at that time one could hardly blame Germany; Britain and France controlled the world economy, and Germany just wanted a piece of it.

BTW it is interesting how German economy resembled nowadays China's. They were starting with cheap crappy products and some British journalists were complaining: today you cannot find even a cheap pencil not produced in Germany. It was end of XIX century.

But the status of individuals, citizens was much better then because it was a time when new modern law order was created and even central governments had bounded hands.
In this sense Bismarck could not stop development of Polish (private) social, cultural and economic initiatives, institutions because could not broke bounded laws... Poles were elected to Prussian parliament as well.

I'm Chinese by race, but I think Poland resembles China more than that of Tibet:
-Both were once the strongest powers within their region and invaded many of their neighbors.
-Both got invaded by foreign nations countless times during the 19th-20th century
-Both like the play the victim card

I agree that Poland should not intefering into other nations inner matters, but you should show more respect to nations which archived more nobel prices than China, specific our nation is much smaller than your country (per capita). And many countries have a great benefit from what Poland had found out.

Be so kind and define me what is Chinese national interests... I see a basic contradiction between China (as multinational, multicultural with many races and religions) as a state interest and narrow nationalistic interest represented by Chinese Han majority...
And one thing more... a "political realism" is often something different when we consider short term perspective (10-20 years) and long one (50+)
Look how modern Germany adopt political realism nowadays, what is completely contradiction of Bismarck policies.
