Does anyone have any good manufacturer's or websites where I can start researching all the different models I can get. I know DPMS makes a knockoff of one, but with the 18" barrel I'm not so sure it would be that accurate even though I use Federal Gold ammo.
Any help, suggestions, and rude comments are appreciated p-)

I'd ask SMGLee. He could probably steer you in the right direction. You might want to look at Centurion Arms...

Have $10,000 handy?
I'm not going to buy the Knight's version, which is why I'm looking to get a cheaper version by another company.

Take a look at these ar15.com sub-fora

The FN FAL is an alternative. Once used by over 100 countries and still used by some 20-25 as the MBG.
Also you might want to do a little reading about the Rock River Arms 308 AR10 LAR-8. It uses FN FAL mags,, @ $10 a pop,, you can buy all you want..
Good Luck...

Or, ever think about building your own?

I'm not against building my own, I just don't know where I would look for the upper/lower receivers. I've only bought weapons straight from a gun shop, therefore I have no experience in building one myself

Arfcom has everything you need, from instructions to links for parts.

Dunno if it's cheap (depends), but I would go for the JP-Enterprises .308. It would satifsy all my needs on .308, if I would have any. This is purely from an ipsc/uspsa enthusiast wievpoint considered. It's direct gas, feels like an ar15, has a tank muzzle break, and a refined trigger system. Plus the free floating handguard is really awsome, you can have your main optics eg. 1-4x, and with a slight tilt of the rifle a dot for closer ranges. To go and visit your own local armourer with your needs is also something I could recomend.

I am currently in the process of building a Armalite based SASS/M110. which was Armalite's entry into the Semi-Automatic Sniper System contract which Knights Armament won.
since M110 upper or gun are nearly impossible to get and with me living in California, I had to based on my build with an off the List receiver.
I got a Armalite SASS upper which you can buy directly from Armalite...
http://www.armalite.com/ItemForm.aspx?item=10002025F&Category=8be021dd-3f84-4aca-bfa1-afcb5ddcc9ba
I went to Iron Ridge Armory to for their billet receiver, since Iron Ridge weren't banned by name under the California AWB, I was able to build the SASS with this lower receiver. as to why i pick this lower, I will explain it later...
http://www.ironridgeguns.com/products/ira10c/index.htm
I also had Iron Ridge do a Flat Dark Earth paint job on the entire gun....
Here is my run down of components...
Armalite AR10 SASS upper assembly
Iron Ridge Billet Receiver with Iron Ridge match trigger
RADD Bullet button magazine release for California Compliance*****
Colt Canada M16A2 stock, Its an A1 length in an A2 configuration.
Tangodown BattleGrip....back ordered
TangoDown Advanced Combat Bi-Pod
TangoDown SCAR rail panels
AAC Blackout MITER style Adjustable-Zero fast-attach Flash hider
American Defense SPR Mount
Midwest Industries Front and Real BUIS
PRI Gas Buster Charging handle(Part of the Armalite SASS package)
Waiting on Scope...most likely a Leupold Mk4 LRT M1 4.5-14x50 illuminated Mil-Dot.
http://www.opticsplanet.net/leupold-mark-4-4-5-14x50mm-lr-t-m1-illuminated-reticle-metric-rifle-scope.html
I will post a picture of the rifle minus the scope this afternoon.
****Since it is a precision rifle, I do not mind using the RADD button for my magazine in order to comply with the California Law. since it requires a tool to release the magazine, I could as easily use a tool to make the magazine change in the field since most of the time i will be ****e on the ground with all my gear next to me.
I had the choice to run DPMS or Armalite, and with the DPMS receiver features without a forward assist, or if available, the assist is part of the deflector, and the magazine choice of the DPMS which has been troublesome since the inception of the SR25. I elected to go with Armalite which offers a forward assist, and a ultra robust magazine system ....with the laws the way they are, I want to build a system with a magazine that you can run over with a truck and still survive... years of shooting and abuse by me.
Iron Ridge was a clear choice, they make their receiver extremely tight, you would literally have to hand fit the receiver to the upper. and their billet machining are just top notch. the receiver is a beauty to behold....

Wait, I thought you can't get any "military style" semi-auto in CA? Or you got it before 2005?
Just asking because I am moving to CA next month.

Best ones all Billet and some can be had to accept G3 Mags. Which are so cheaper then Armalite Mags or DPMS Mags. Cheaper then the ones that accept M14 or FAL Mags also.

California law is strange. you can buy a semi automatic rifle if you go two routes......feature or featureless...
Both route starts with a off the list receiver. those are receiver that were not banned by name in the last AWB passed in 2000(don't hold me to the exact year). so recently you have a salute of smaller manufacture making lowers or marketing lower in their names that are actually not on the California ban list....
You can build a rifle with detachable magazine if you have a featureless rifle, that means NO flash hider, bayonet lug, verticle grip, pistol grip and collapsible stock.
Or
You can build one with all the features but a non-detachable 10rd magazine. hence the bullet buttons that you see all over the internet to feed the California market. and that is the route I took with my AR10 build.

California has some of the stupidest laws.
I will truly never understand. Gangbangers will continue to get their guns with in regards to the law.
I am glad that I don't live there and can have my better rifles and illegal Cali ones. SBR's SBS Suppressors and FA.

I am glad that I only need to stay in CA for half year...
But what was the purpose to ban AR-15s? Weren't most crimes involved with illegal pistols instead of rifles?

because M16s are military rifles that have no use in civilian hands.

Can't you just buy a rifle inter-state and register it in California...
...or not?

Wrong anyone can buy a M16 if they are allowed to do so in that state.
First get your ATF form get approved pay the $200 for a Tax Stamp
Then proceed to buy your M16.
Last time I checked M16A1 where going for about $16K for a good one and about $12K for Complete lower or Stripped lower.
Lightning Links and RDIAS are other things to go full auto.
I don't see them much. Cause once we get one they are gone in no time.

You can buy a SIG SG556 or a FN SCAR 16S as long as the gun is not listed in the previous California AWB. but your dealer would have to bring the gun in with a bullet button in it already or the gun would have to shipped separately so they are not shipping a completed evil black rifle into the people republic of California.

So, you can still have a civilian AR-15 in CA as long as the brand or model is not on the "evil" list, am I right?

My bad I take the Laws seriously. I want people to know more about there rights is why I posted that. It cracks me up when some idiot at the range looks at one of my systems and tells me it's illegal.

Yes I am not the best when it comes to Cali law. I always assumed had to have a 10 round Magazine if it is Semi Auto. Then it has to be a bolt ation for 10+ Magazine. It's honestly so stupid. I mean I have seen them with these 10/20 magazines only hold 10 but looks like a 20.
We do not sell anything Semi out there. Mostly we ship some high end skeet and clay guns. out there.
Californians need to take their rights back.
Anyone know how easy it is to even get a CCW out there.
