Paramilitary troops patrolled the streets of a town in eastern Pakistan yesterday after Muslim radicals burned to death eight members of a Christian family, raising fears of violence spreading to other areas.
Hundreds of armed supporters of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, an outlawed Islamic militant group, burned dozens of Christian homes in Gojra over the weekend after allegations that a copy of the Koran had been defiled.
The mob opened fire indiscriminately, threw gas bombs and looted houses as thousands of frightened Christians ran for safety. “They were shouting anti-Christian slogans and attacked our houses,” Rafiq Masih, a resident of the predominantly Christian colony, said. Residents said that police stood aside while the mob went on the rampage. “We kept begging for protection, but police did not take action,” Masih said.
Police and local officials said that at least eight people, including four women and a child, were killed in the fires. Two others died of gunshot wounds. Residents said that the casualties were much higher; one claimed that the number of dead could be in the dozens as many bodies were still buried under the rubble. Shahbaz Bhatti, the Minister for Minorities, said that 40 Christian homes were torched in rioting. He said there was no truth to allegations that a Koran had been defiled, and accused the police of ignoring his appeal to provide protection to Christians.
Tension started mounting last week after Muslims accused three Christian youths of burning a copy of the Koran. They denied the allegations, but clerics called for their death. On Saturday, hundreds of supporters of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, an outlawed Sunni sectarian group, poured into the town from surrounding districts. The group is believed to have close links with Al Qaeda and has been involved in several terrorist attacks targeting security forces in recent years.
Television footage showed armed men running through the streets, gunfire, and women and children wailing. Blackened furniture lay outside burning homes, while a group of people rushed a man suffering from burns on a cart through the streets. Rehman Malik, the Interior Minister, said that the paramilitary troops were sent after police and the local administration failed to control the situation. Security forces were also placed on high alert to prevent violence from spreading to other towns of Punjab.

Who cares. I really have no reason to feel for anyone who would be stupid enough to trash a holy book of another religion, especially where radicals that would kill you for not covering your face are living.

Are you f**ken serious? Its a piece of goddamned paper like any other book the only 'holy' properties it has is the fact fanatical ****heads are willing to kill or be killed over it. Should someone openly disrespect anothers culture, of coooourse not but to burn a family to death because their butthurt because their silly superstitious book was 'defiled' not only is irrational its insanity, furthermore the fact you could co-sign that family to death only proves the old saying "Atheists can be both good people that do good things and bad people that do bad things, Religious people can be both good people who do good things and bad people who do bad things but if you want to make a good person do a bad thing you need religion".
Presumably you take yourself for a 'good person', if not though cookies for you and your honesty.

I am honest. I don't really practice any religion, mainly cause it never did anything for me. But I just think that if you live somewhere that the radicals will kill you for some really stupid things that you shouldn't trash their book. They were acting like a bunch of morons.

I do agree with you that it is foolish to tempt fate in such a situation, however I also believe that these people don't deserve to be killed. I mean if we say "oh well thats just how it is where they live" then we might as well make excuses for the holocaust or any other situation in which people were unjustly murdered due to their circumstances of geography.
Bottom line, the reason for which these people were brutally and barbarically murdered is abhorrent regardless of the reasoning (no matter how mental) behind it. So I do feel sympathy for these victims of religious bullying and wouldn't wish their fate on my worst enemy.
dumbass have you read anything about someone producing evidence of someone *actually* defiling a holy book of all places in hellhole Pakistan that exists only, simply and entirely because China and US won't let it die its natural death like its brethern nations such as Somalia, Ethiopia etc... In Pakistan all you have to do is shout from a rooftop that holy book has been defiled and 3000 a**lifters will be ready to butcher just about anyone they can lay their hands on.

Stone age religion with stone age mentality strikes again.
I like how atheists are so discriminatory, if a few muslims were impaled for defiling a church, sure we'd never here the end of it (rightly so) but when the shoe is on the other foot... silence.

This happened yesterday
SHEIKHUPURA: Two people were killed when a mob of hundreds of people, including factory workers, attacked a leather processing unit near Muridke on Tuesday over alleged desecration of Quranic verses. Leather unit owner Sheikh Najeeb Zafar is among the dead.
Police however, suspected that desecration issue had been used to instigate workers of East Leather Factory, Khatiala Virkan, and people living in nearby villages to settle some personal score.
Police said there had been a simmering dispute between the management and workers over the wages issue. At least 24 assailants were apprehended in a late-night development.
Sheikhupura DPO Rai Tahir said Qasim Mughal, a representative of workers, held a meeting with Najeeb Zafar on wages. He said Zafar was rolling a calendar carrying Quranic verses at that time.
The DPO said Mughal accused Zafar of desecrating the verses. Later, Mughal conveyed his accusations to fellow workers and nearby villagers through his cell phone.
They said that Shabbir, a village prayer leader, played a major role in instigating the villagers through the loudspeaker. He announced that Zafar tore apart the holy book and threw its pages in a nearby drain.
Police said the workers held a demonstration inside the factory, while the villagers blocked Sheikhupura Road.
When the protesting workers stormed Zafar’s office, security guards confronted them and reportedly opened fire. Some workers snatched the gun from a security guard and returned the fire.
The crossfire left Zafar and labourer Muzammil Shah dead. The protesters later ransacked the factory and set fire to it. Police reached the scene and dispersed the protesters.
Dawn learnt that Zafar had a quarrel with some people over a business issue two weeks ago. There were reports that he had been facing business-related disputes with his family business partners.
Zafar’s body was brought to Mayo Hospital’s city morgue for a post-mortem examination at around 10:40pm. A source at the morgue told Dawn that two shots had been fired at Zafar that caused his death.

It seems these kind of incidents are quite common in Pakistan. The religion of peace.
PS: The victims were Muslims

By our correspondents
MURIDKE/LAHORE: A factory owner and a labourer were killed and dozens of workers injured in a leather factory on the Muridke-Sheikhupura road near Kathiala village after a factory official allegedly incited labourers by accusing the owner of desecration of the Quranic verses.
The riots broke out at 3am, when the factory workers were incited by a factory official to demonstrate against the desecration allegedly committed by Mian Najeeb Zafar, owner of Eastern Leather Factory. As a result, the labourers blocked the Muridke-Sheikhupura road, damage the factory and are reported to have resorted to firing. The deceased were identified as Mian Najeeb Zafar and a labourer Muzammal. All the injured persons were shifted to the THQ Hospital, most of them stated to be in a precarious condition.
DPO Sheikhupura Rai Tahir and SHO Muridke Sadar police station reached the spot and calmed down the labourers and manage to reopen the road after three hours.
DPO Rai Tahir confirmed the death of two persons including the factory owner and a protester. The DPO claimed that a factory official, Qasim, had provoked the workers against the factory owner over the alleged desecration of the Holy Qura’an to further his personal interest.
He explained that the factory workers confirmed that the owner had only disposed of a calendar, which had no Quranic verses, to paste a new one published for the month of Ramazan. Rai said the accused man called the Imam of the factory mosque and made announcements about sacrilege of the Holy Qura’an which led to the clash and protests.
Asked about the arrest of the accused, Rai Tahir said the protestors had fled the area. However, raids were being conducted to arrest them. The DPO said the case would be registered only after consulting legal experts.

as stated earlier in the 'other thread', its a sad law created in 1982 by Zia ul Haq to appease the Saudis and their wahabbi philosophies. and it is used to gain property or any other benefit that illiterate villagers want. and christians are not the only victims of it. infact, more muslims have been victims of it than christians,
