BERN, Switzerland

Drug maker Novartis AG said Tuesday that animal rights activists have stolen the ashes of its CEO's mother and set fire to his Austrian hunting lodge.Swiss authorities, however, said they didn't know who was behind the attacks.

In the latest incident, CEO Daniel Vasella's Tyrollean lodge in Bach, Austria, was badly burned early Monday morning. "It was arson with a professional fire accelerator," Novartis spokeswoman Isabel Guerra said in Basel.

One week earlier, someone dug up an urn containing the ashes of Vasella's mother, who died in 2001, and took them from her grave in the eastern Swiss city of Chur, leaving behind the spray-painted message "Drop HLS Now" in red letters on the gravestone. Graffiti slogans against Novartis and Vasella were also written on the church in Vasella's village of Risch in central Switzerland about three weeks ago, the company said. Novartis spokesman Satoshi Sugimoto said the company is convinced that British-based animal rights activists are behind a string of attacks on the company and its chief. "We have no doubt that it is the same perpetrators," Sugimoto said.

The animal rights group Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty has campaigned for years against the British testing laboratory Huntingdon Life Sciences, but on Tuesday the group denied any involvement in the Novartis attacks. "It's not true," said Debbie Vincent, a volunteer with SHAC in Britain. She said it was possible that a lone "antivivisectionist" had carried out the attacks, but said the group had done no more than demonstrate against Novartis. Other animal rights groups in Britain also say Novartis has medical products tested on animals by Huntingdon, a company hounded in Britain and the United States for such work. Sugimoto, however, said the Basel-based Novartis has had no studies or any other work carried out by Huntingdon for years. "That's very strange," said Vincent. "They've never told us that. Why don't they tell us that directly?"

Juerg Buehler, director of the Swiss government's Service for Analysis and Prevention, said there was no concrete indication who was behind the arson attack but said SHAC could not be ruled out. The group has been active in Switzerland for about five years. "We still have too little solid evidence," Buehler told Swiss Radio.

According to Novartis, attacks on houses and cars of the company employees as well as on Novartis property have grown in recent months. In May, the company's restaurant at sports facilities in nearby St. Louis, France, was damaged by fire.

These animal rights groups are waltzing right into terrorist acts without a second thought. Sure, unnecessary animal testing and cruelty need to be monitored, especially for something as utterly useless as cosmetics, but as for vaccines and medical procedures?
Mr. Bunny isn't worth as much as my kids in the grand scheme of things.

I hope they catch those asshats and prosecute them.

Despicable.

A few yrs ago, before the arson and ashes things, he got ASSAULTED on a sunday morning on HIS property by similar criminals using HELICOPTERS and MOTORBOATS blasting Ride of the Valkyries. No joke: http://www.wiwo.de/unternehmer-maerkte/novartis-sein-eigene-s-kunstwerk-336433/

I mean seriously this is straight out of a Tom Clancy novel and would even make the news in Colombia. Crazy, and weird that he didn't have any security in place.

I remember an American tv station reporter go on **** Fulds huge property, within 10 seconds of them arriving at the main house there was someone telling (shouting) them to GTFO and 2 minutes later cops where on the spot who then escorted the reporters away.....

an organisation called MFAH (militant forces against huntington life sciences) admitted to the burning of the hunting lodge. i'm not gonna quote the text in here. it's hosted on a american based platform. http://www.directaction.info/news_aug05_09.htm

no one took responsability for the stealing of his mother's ashes.

aparently these groups are closly watched in switzerland by the DAP, dienst für analyse und prävention, the swiss NSA of sorts.

these stories making the headlines is not intended as it gives those "activists" a platform they don't deserve.

I'll just go ahead and post a little comment which I found in the NZZ article on said subject:

I'm from Basel and can't agree more. The Police in Basel is a disorganized heap and Novartis and Roche are already massively outsourcing R&D amongst other things (which used to be firmly anchored in Basel and rather succesfully).

I'll never forget Christmas 2001. Kurdish protestors assembled in a matter of 10s of minutes and all of a sudden there were about 100 protestors max shouting in Megaphones and waving flags. There were rumors of them arriving from nearby Alsace FR and Südbaden DE so the authorities, brilliant as always, shut down the tramlines servicing the innercity (where it all took place) in the middle of Christmas shopping rush. The even made a roadblock (yes a ROADBLOCK) on one of the now deserted tram lines and had riot gear on and German Shepherds at the ready.
You think they put anything at their disposition to use to handle those 100 blowhards who ruined the day of half the city? NO. They stood there and watched for hours till the Kurds were getting tired and finally left.

"To serve and protect" Way to go!

They sound very radical, and they are obviously from the news we have here.

Which amazes me is that it's "animal rights "activists"" who get so radical to actually carry out such attacks. You have so many seemingly radical groups on the political spectrum, and somehow these "animal right groups" attract such looneys.

It's because of the kittens. Won't somebody please think of the kittens?

They probably already mixed her ashes with melted rubber and urine and are using it to give each other badass animal tattoos.
