Uighur unrest shows China's failures: Dalai Lama
Thu Aug 6, 2009 11:32am EDT
By Laura MacInnis GENEVA (*******) - Ethnic riots in northwest China have exposed the failings of Beijing's minority policies, and a more "realistic" stance toward Tibetans and others could emerge within a decade, the Dalai Lama said on Thursday.
On a visit to Geneva, he said there were no talks under way between Beijing and the exiled Tibetans he leads on the future of Chinese rule in his Himalayan homeland.
The Tibetan spiritual leader said the Uighur unrest in Xinjiang province in July, in which 197 people died according to the official death toll, showed the need for the Chinese Communist Party to rethink its approach.
"The time has come," the Nobel Peace Prize winner said.
"Their policy basically failed to bring enthusiasm in the minority people," he said, citing a lack of trust and little feeling of a "concept of we" across different Chinese groups.
In Xinjiang's worst ethnic violence in decades, native Uighurs last month attacked Han Chinese in the regional capital Urumqi after police tried to break up a protest against attacks on Uighur migrant workers in south China.
Chinese authorities said most of those killed in the riots were Han Chinese, who make up the overwhelming majority of China's 1.3 billion population. Exiled Uighurs said security forces then detained thousands of Uighurs.
Millions of Han Chinese have migrated into Xinjiang during decades of Communist rule and tensions run high between them and Uighurs, a Muslim people culturally and linguistically tied to Central Asia.
"CLEAR SPLIT"
Last year violent anti-Chinese protests in Tibet led to 19 deaths and, according to exiles, a subsequent crackdown by security forces killed more than 200.
The Dalai Lama has lived in India since fleeing a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959. China accuses him of stoking unrest among Tibetans, while he says he opposes violence and seeks religious freedom and autonomy for the region.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with Chinese and Tibetan activists, he described a "very clear" split between hardliners and moderates among China's leaders, and said Chinese intellectuals were increasingly pressing for a new stance.
"After five years, 10 years, I think things will change," he said, adding that many Chinese leaders privately acknowledged a need "to bring a more realistic policy."
"When I look at Tibet issue locally I am hopeless," he said. "When I look at Tibet issue from wider perspective, I am very, very optimistic."

na, to me, DLLM is just a clown to do everything to please his western masters.
as i said, if he really cares about the human rights of his fellow Tibetans in China, then he should come back to China and stand with them, if the Tibetans are mistreated by the CCP as he always claimed, then he should suffer the pain with them togather.
Mahatma Gandhi stands togather with the Indians to fight for the freedom of India, and he went on several serious hunger strike to call for the peace among his fellow Indians; he is a real anti-violence believer and you can only call people like this holiness, you dont call a clown holiness.

Why do you see a western conspiracy in everything and calling the leader of the Tibetians a clown just shows the level of your immaturity. If you try to spit on the moon it falls back on your face.

What is the guarantee that he wont be imprisoned or executed on his arrival in China? The treatment of Tibetians by the Chinese Government is a well documented fact which needs no argument. Why have foreign journalists not been allowed in Tibet since last years Lhasa riots.

Indians have varied views on Gandhi and his non-violent struggle for freedom. I for one am not a Gandhi lover but would say he was a good man who did what he thought was right for Indians.
PS: Dalai Lama won the Noble Peace Prize and Gandhi didnt. Bit ironic for you I might add.

It is not strange that the DL until now has been very quiet over the riots in Xinjiang.
Apart from an official message condeming the violence with no reference to whom the violent party is, until now he did not really say anything.

His holiness speaks the truth.
He's a theocratic retard who gets paid big money for useless speeches
Rememer the Lama is the holy nut who actually DEFENDED OSAMA's ATTACKS ON THE UNITED STATES not once but he waffles on about crap about 911 every damn year
http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/archive/NATL-Dalai-Lama-Bin-Laden-Was-Not-Born-Violent.html
the guy never lived in the real world
He's not some "holiness" the hollywood nuts and scientologists describe him as. I think Communism sucks but I would rather qualified people running the place than some spritual numbskull who knows nothing about medicine, science, security or economics
spritual Lama bullsh* t is for rich celebrities who get bored when they aren't filming movies
As bad as the commies are the Chinese are doing much better off without his old Lama's theocratic system
I don't understand how putting some guy like him, a guy who inherited his jopb and has no clue about economics or transport and putting his Lama this in charge of the region would make China anymore democratic? . If the rightists in Taiwan had won the civil war instead of the commies in Beijing we would have a slightly different China today and none of you guys would be giving a damn about that region.
Care to explain why Taiwan also lays claim to the Region?

Did you even read the article? Just a question..
I'm with VAMAN:
His holiness speaks the truth.
From Stinky's very own link:
The Dalai Lama, Tibet's spiritual leader for 70 years, said that Chinese/Tibetan conflicts could be solved through discussion between the two nations, and that he has "failed" so far in pursuing a compromise.
"We want to bring a better situation out of a closer understanding with the Chinese government," he said.
Tibet doesn't want a full separation from China -- instead, the Tibetans are asking for a cultural "autonomy" that wouldn't necessarily mean a political split from the Chinese Communist system, said the Dalai Lama, who called himself a "Marxist" and "Socialist."
"We are not seeking separation," His Holiness told interviewer Fareed Zakaria on the program.
The Chinese, who've seen Tibet's attempt to establish a legitimate, recognized government as a form of secession, are slowly seeking to extinguish the Tibetan people and culture, he said, but allies across the globe are showing support for the Tibetan people.
"In Europe and North America, I think many people are showing genuine concern," said the Dalai Lama, who said people worldwide would protect Tibet from total occupation.
"The world would not let that happen," he said.

I thought I'd post a video relevant to this discussion - it portrays viewpoints by both Han and Uighur peoples. Both sides seem to feel they are equally discriminated against.
I really hope things can get better.

The reporter's voice is weird - I think he's someone from Russia Today.

Just quote something said by the Israeli regarding to the safety of overseas israelis (http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1249418558533&pagename=JPost/JPArticle/ShowFull)
"If, god forbid, one hair on the head of an official Israeli representative, or an unofficial one, is harmed, we will view Hizbullah as responsible and it will suffer the consequences," Ayalon said. "And the consequences, as far as Hizbullah is concerned, will be very severe."
Change it a bit:
"If, god forbid, one hair on the head of an official Chinese representative, or an unofficial one, is harmed, and should we conclude Uighur exiles as responsible and it will suffer the consequences. And the consequences, as far as the Uighur exiles are concerned, will be very severe."
As they attacked chinese tourists in Germany.

And then? China about to wage war on Germany? Lol...
In contrast to China, we have the rule of law and when there is enough evidence against an Uighur who committed a crime against a Chinese, he will be prosecuted. But how can I exepct a Chinese to understand this when he has only experienced arbitrariness from the Goverment.
Beside this, your line of thought represent the very nature of Nazi Court verdicts where it was enough to send innocent people to Concentration Camps when they had links (friends, family etc) to enemies of the State. You do the same by linking an action of one to the whole people using a criteria (group membership) that has nothing to to with the crime in question. This makes it very easy to let Uighurs suffer from the majority Han Chinese nationalists.
