Why do some ground troops (i.e. special forces, etc.) wear flight suits?

I searched and could not find the answer. Google is my friend and it failed me.

Because they are safer in a fire being flame resistant garments. Caught in an IED the wearer will suffer less burns than if in the 'standard' unfirm, as the standard stuff used to 'melt' to the skin, causing horrific injuries.

I think it's because they're treated with flame-retardant stuff so they would be less susceptible to burns and the like.

EDIT: Damn you 2495! ;-)

So the only reason they wear them over normal BDUs if because they are flame-retardant?

They're also more comfortable.

ONLY? whats so freaking 'only' about having polyester crap melting to every inch of your skin resulting in near total area coverage burns? fvck only, its probably the no:1 worry of all soldiers being burnt in a vehicle / IED, short of getting your balls and c0ck shot off that is.

They don't wear them over their standard BDUs. Flame-resistant combat fatigues are worn directly on the skin or above a first layer of likewise flame-resistant clothing. The reason you wanna wear FR stuff is you don't want your skin permantly fused with your clothes in case of an explosion or other high temperature emmitting occurences. Plastic + Fire + Skin = Not really healthy.

Regular cammies are fire retardant too, they are just not as thin and comfy as flight suits. On the other hand, flight suits are not as durable, and you can't easily leave a poop.

Because deep down everyone wishes they were part of the two winged master race...

All I wore last time over was the A2C2 uniform, green undershirt, and combat shirt. It was very comfortable and breathed alot better than the regular ACUs. I kinda went over board because of the deep ingrained fear of burning alive

Well inside a veh the thing you should worry about the most is spalling, not a fire.

I thought melting synthetic issue was solved a long time ago.

The likes of camo oversuits like the KLMK and Desert Night overalls are comfortable, breathable and easy. Just if the pocket arrangements and layout was sorted.
