Regular US Army (not SOF) laptops are just Panasonic Toughbooks.

+1 on Toughbooks (there is one in my unit), also there are specially manufactured computers designed for military tasks, e.g. Elbit ETC (Enhanced Tactical Computer):

General Dynamics Itronix makes some rugged military laptops and tablet PC:s.

What is the issue with the toughbook and alikes, batteries tend not to last too long when exposed to cold, an hour of operating time under -20C is a miracle.

Buy a normal laptop then leave it on a train. Voila! You have a (British) military laptop

Buy a laptop, get drugged in Asia and have a hooker take it- now you have a genuine (Australian) Navy laptop.

Fvck no. I'm a civilian and the only action it sees is coffee or beer being spilled on my HP.

Your threads need a bit of work, these short blunt thread intros without providing a kick off set of pictures or review, make for a slow start.
This has been done before too, so I've merged it.

So you can scream ''Friendly predator missile inbound'' to scare your fellow MW2 players that happen to be your enemies?

Never used a Toughbook in a military environment, but I have seen them take quite some abuse in a civilian one. Had one that got driven over "accidentally" (yeah right Stuart), and all that happened to it was a slight crack in the chassis. And that one wasn't even a full blown ruggedised one.

And I'm typing this right now on a CF-18 Toughbook, which is a convertable tablet version with a touch screen. Magnesium alloy chassis, all ports and keyboard sealed etc. Haven't ever tested the toughness mind you.

Defence Tech using us for market research?

Honestly I can only start by saying that military equipment is bought with much different reasoning than civilians should apply, they buy in bulk and they buy for a specific use.

But if you're going to take your laptop to a construction site, use it around a workshop, use it in your off road in the middle of nowhere you might want a rugged laptop.

And it seems that Toughbooks are the popular choice :)

What are your requirements?

I have seen two different approaches to the toughened laptop issue. The first is to buy one when you are going into a situation where the environment calls for one. The main issue is that a toughbook or equivalent are 3 -5 times more expensive than a regular notebook. Which goes to the second approach which is just to buy a replacement every time you destroy your regular notebook and hope you don't destroy more than 5 in the 3-5 years you'd normally keep a toughbook.

Oh that helps much.

I meant what would it be up against, I can't imagine you shooting at it.

You are the one seeking answers and yet you are being a complete f*wit with your secrecy and short messages.

It's not like you're researching a future computer purchase to suit the needs of OMFGyouknowhatunit so yeah get a toughbook, be like those who buy a watch with altimeter an expensive off roader but don't ever leave the city.

But hey, help yourself, good luck.

Yo what I need a rugged laptop for is not relevant, to the question
or really any of your business,
I am curious as to what other users have used and their experience
and opinions on different models for me to decide whats best for me
Not what u would prefer,
duh

What type of camo pattern would you guys suggest for a special forces (d3lta) unit operating in N. Korea? It will involve night missions so I don't want something too "loud".

It might require some amphibious landings too, so any good ideas on how to make such a laptop watertight?

*note to self: get matching mousepad.

buy a laptop (dell, hp, gateway or acer), install form flow, a green backgorund that says "unclassified", in white bold font. now you have an US Army laptop, ready to take to all REMF places, to operate under heavy AC, to type up DA 4856, DA 1594, read you AKO, and purchase Ranger gear for FOBIT missions.

Well you have my opinions, and I am a "professional" for what it is worth, having worked with toughened laptops since 2000.
